Blockbuster Total Access to include video games

While the main difference between Total Access and Netflilx was the ability for Blockbuster subscribers to return their movies to a physical store if they chose, today the gap between the two services increased.

Blockbuster's Total Access program is the video store's answer to Netflix's by-mail DVD trade. Today, Blockbuster announced it will be renting video games in the Total Access program, putting them in competition with not only Netflix, but Gamefly as well.

Today marks the launch of the pilot program, and the company intends for a nationwide rollout by the rapidly approaching second quarter of 2009. The program will include Wii, PS2, PS3, Xbox, and Xbox 360 titles for rent. Gamefly offers all those systems and also includes the PSP, Nintendo DS, and Gameboy advance, as well as the Nintendo Gamecube.

Blockbuster Total Access plans cost between $9.99 and $19.99 per month, and Total Access Premium plans range from $21.99 to $34.99 per month. An additional tier that includes video games has not yet been unveiled.

Gamefly's by-mail game rental service costs between $15.95 and $36.95 per month.

It's about time Blockbuster did this. I would have thought they could have came with this service damn near 2 years ago.

I'm sure netflix and gamefly will merge to counteract this venture with possibly a lower price..

The consumer will be the winner.

I have the Blockbuster online service. I have had it for almost 3 years now and I like it. I usually return the videos at the store for a reduced rental rate for games. It comes to $5.34 for the game rental and the system automatically registers the return and sends out my new movie(s) sometimes within the same day. I like the game option now. I stopped buying games unless they are worthy after the rental so this will save me a couple bucks and some time too!

I got Blockbuster service too the 3 at a time and unlimited in store exchange. I pay around $25. Had netflix but made the switch 2 years ago never looked back since. Im glad they are adding the games. Tried out gamefly for two months but the turnaround is too slow, takes about a week for them to receive/ship the game

i had this shit right before christmas, pay 21 a month... it's cool, but the blockbuster close to me is small as hell, so i'm a have to cancel an do it at another store... since that shit is only for that particular store you open your account up with

As bad as Blockbuster is trying to stay a float i'm suprised they took this long to do this.
