What's your thoughts on the racism in porn? Does it exists or is it something people on the outside of the industry only assumes it's there?
I’ve actually been meaning to write a blog about this, but I’ll touch on my thoughts now. It isn’t so much that there is racism in PORN, but racism in society. I’m not saying that is doesn’t exist in the industry, but it’s more a reflection of society as a whole in my opinion. Porn companies don’t make “interracial” a separate category because they themselves are racist, but because people will buy (or not buy) porn based entirely on the race of the performers. It’s just business, but it certainly does illustrate a serious problem.
As for why many girls wait to do IR, there can be many reasons. People are quick to assume that because a girl doesn’t do interracial on camera, she MUST be racist. Obviously that’s a possibility, but there are other factors to consider before jumping to such extreme conclusions.
Porn is a business like any other, so it really all comes down to supply and demand. If people want to see a particular type of porn, and the girl holds out, she’s increasing her demand as her brand grows, and she accrues more fans. When she decides to do it, she can negotiate a higher rate for the job, the same as for any “new” sexual experience. Just because a girl doesn’t do anal on camera doesn’t mean she doesn’t like it, and just because a performer is strictly girl/girl doesn’t mean she doesn’t like guys. I agree that it’s not ideal or necessarily right when it comes to race, but what it really comes down to is money, not bigotry. Although, to be fair, the fact that the opportunity to make more money even exists is a direct result of society’s flaws.
My reasoning for waiting didn’t have to do with money, but rather the type of content I initially saw that turned me off from it. A lot of interracial porn doesn’t JUST feature interracial sex, but glorifies racial stereotypes to an extreme. I don’t support the promotion of those stereotypes, because I think they are wrong and unjust. To me, interracial porn should be just like any other porn. Luckily, I think people are starting to agree on that, as is evidenced by the creation of sites like Blacked.com, who I think does wonderful work. If you’ve noticed, that particular site is getting a TON of girls to do their first interracial, which leads me to believe that maybe a lot of other girls felt the same way I did. Perhaps, for a lot of girls, it has nothing to do with the money, or the race of their fellow performer, but rather the derogatory vibe of a lot of the content that is currently being produced.
Another thing to look at when considering race in porn is the ability for an ethnic performer to be successful. There is a lot more room in the industry for a blonde, big breasted porn star to come in, than for a black girl, or an Asian girl, no matter how beautiful or talented they are. Does this mean that porn producers are secretly conspiring to keep non-whites out of porn? Of course not. It means that there are 10 million people who will buy porn with blonde big breasted women, and only 1 million who want to see Asian porn. I’m obviously just making up numbers, but the point is that there is simply a larger market for certain looks. The more a girl fits into the mainstream definition of beauty, the easier it will be to get work, because more people are buying into that particular fantasy. This isn’t just in porn, but non-adult entertainment and modeling industries as well, and it doesn’t just have to do with race, but with tattoos, piercings, etc as well. This, too, is changing though as society evolves. The top performers in the industry are more diverse than ever, and I do believe it will continue to improve with time.
So, yes, there is racism in porn, but not because the industry itself is inherently racist, but because as a business, it is influenced and driven by a market that is still quite ass backwards in a lot of ways. I do see it changing, but it will never entirely disappear until it disappears from society.
