Black Women And The "Pressure" To Spend

When rapper Maino recently took issue with Dominican model Rosa Acosta for wearing "cheap shoes" to a video shoot little did he know he was touching on a nerve for many women of color. "Look at your shoes. Look at your bag," he said on a radio show. "I don't even f**k with women like you. Imagine I pull up in a Bentley and jump out, and this b**ch got on her cheap ass shoes. I don't want you if I can't sport you."

Acosta responded by saying she would wear what she could afford. "Why would I go and buy a $2000 pair of shoes that I can't afford when I can actually help my family or I could spend money on my education." Blogger Necole Bitchie also took exception with the rapper's characterization of a suitable woman, saying "Maino's comment and mentality is the reason why [women] are skipping out on rent...just to floss. If you have a closet full of expensive shoes and handbags but still have trouble keeping your lights on or you are hiding your car from the repo man every other month. That's a problem."

The paradox of keeping up appearances by accumulating debt is one that might be familiar to many and is directly linked to how our spending habits can negatively affect our ability to save and increase our wealth.

In 2008 ESSENCE Magazine partnered with the ING Community Foundation to conduct a survey on the spending habits of Black women. Of the 1000 surveyed, 68% said they buy whatever they want whether it's a good or bad economy and 40% said they shopped to cheer themselves up. The issue of Black women and wealth has also recently been addressed in a report by the Insight Center for Community and Economic Development, which said that Black and Hispanic women were least likely to accumulate wealth.

Besides spending more money on "children's footwear, children's apparel, and footwear" (says a Consumer Expenditure Report) than any other group, another reason for the wealth disparity lies in the fact that Black women tend to feel more of an obligation to friends and family. More than half of those surveyed by ING said they had loaned a family member $500 or more in the last year, and one-third said it was $1000 or more. "Black women's sense of obligation to community and family is both extraordinary and commendable," said ING president Rhonda Mims at the time. "But when you are pulled in so many directions financially, something or someone has to pay the price. For Black women, it appears their financial well-being suffers."

Racialicious editor Latoya Peterson links the issue of overspending in order to look good to peer pressure, as evidenced by Maino's requirements. "Considering so many women are willing to "invest" in fashion over financial products, she writes. "How does perceived social capital in the dating market (i.e. men like Maino and their preferences) influence what women choose to invest in?"

What do you think?

We cant require from them what the require from us?

If a man doesnt have on the right shoes, the right car, the right job,
the right "swagg" he will be passed over, or labeled as lame.

These broads should try to get I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T of debt!!!

Why can't we? That's what I have a problem with.

I want a woman on my level.

I want someone that's dependable, not a dependent.
I want someone that's a help mate, not a hindrance.

Is that too much to ask?

And for the record, I think Rosa Acosta should have responded to Maino's comments with "OK, that's fine".

She shouldn't break her neck to be with someone that ain't checking for her. If money is his number one objective (which is perfectly fine in my book) and it's not hers, then they don't want the same thing and aren't equally yoked.
Agree to disagree.

Maino may be able to make appearances a top priority. He may have all his other priorities taken care of and they are non-issues for him, so then his objective changes to other things like appearances.... different strokes.

Me, I'm still tryna get this house on my street, a 52" walk behind, and my Regal painted wet. I ain't w'rried bout a bitch AT ALL!

Please remember that this is only one man's opinion whether you agree or disagree with his comments.

I don't believe that women should have to break the bank just to look good for a man. That's just stupid in my opinion.

A woman can look good without making herself broke for the next few years paying things off on credit..

I require none of these things. A job no matter what it is would be preferable just so you not getting money out of me every week and getting mad when I don't give it to you - but everyone has their circumstances; you work with what you got.

Jo it's funny I see you posted this because NY&Co has a 50% off sale until midnight. After reading this I don't want to spend anymore money, but all I got is sweaters and it's hot :( .

FIRST lets be real Maino does not have a Bentley that he has the pink slip to. We know rappers money aint that long(only the ones at the top of the game get it in like that) if he has one it is rented or leased so if floss like a coon he wants a women who will floss like a coon!!!! No real man wants a woman to over spend her money for something so stupid as shoes and a handbag LOL broke people spend their money to make people think they got money look at Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet[no flossing for them!!!! we dumb/B]

Shit, a female that keeps her hair, nails and feet done runs into some dough. All the clothes and shoes....you're talking about a lot of money.

I'd rather have a woman that spends wisely (the sale rack) and keeps herself up, than a woman that stays fresh but is broke.

Sorry, Melon :lol::lol:

I am a girl who has caviar tastes, I will admit...BUT, I know how to work sales to my advantage and get comfortable talking to sales associates in all kinds of stores to find the best deals and know when the best sales are happening...

I was embarrassed when I was in one of my favorite stores - Anthropologie - and the manager walked up to me, greeted and hugged me, and questioned where I had been  As if the poor dollars I spend there truly amount to anything substantial in their monthly intake :smh:

I think budget setting is an important part of knowing how much you can put towards your shopping expenses per month. It's ok to splurge on something you really want, especially if you have been fiscal with your money. But, on the usual, you can find me in the sale section or vintage/consignment shops getting my shop on... from accessories to shoes and clothing...

I actually have a homegirl doing a blog, right now, where she has given up shopping from January 2010 to July 2010. BUT, she needed to

I hate the way he speaks (men step your language skills up), but he may have a point. If she is wearing cheap, plastic looking shoes like one would find at Payless or Walmart, she should be called out at the video shoot. As a model she should know that. On her own time, she can wear what she likes and who gives a fuck if some broke, no-name rapper would want to be seen with her. At the same time, she can have good quality shoes & clothes at throw away prices. Since she's in that industry she could also play it to her advantage and get lots of freebies too.

The key is learning how to shop. And this goes for men AND women. Clearance sales are key because department stores change their inventory every 6-8weeks. There will always be mark downs, so people who buy all of their clothes at full price are stupid. It's straight comedy to hear people boast about how they spent so much on their clothes & accessories. Like really, you're proud that you wasted your hard-earned money?
