Shit hit worldwide news.

Maybe will be picked up tomorrow by American MSM

Now tell me that shit is NOT powerful

That's the problem with the social media generation. They equate power\action with attention. That's not the same thing. It could be the argued that it is just the opposite. Perfect example is the Trayvon Martin situation, a bunch of twittering and Facebooking, then nothing. On to the next topic. Black Twitter ain't shit.

Another BGOL thread where a good number of posters are typing without knowing what the fuck they're talking about. Twitter is one of the most powerful tools available to folk right now and Black Twitter is the real deal.

The Trayvon Martin juror who had a book deal decided not to go ahead with her book after getting outed on Black Twitter. The person who blew up her spot started tweeting the book publisher who signed the deal casting a negative light upon the whole sordid affair. When the rest of Black Twitter picked up on it and started retweeting and tweeting the publisher, word spread and a wave a negative publicity hit the project before it even got started. The publisher backed down and decided not to publish the book. The juror dead'd the idea of writing about her experiences.

ABC's Scandal is a network monster because of Black Twitter.

Read up on Black Twitter and see how mainstream media sites (Gawker, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post) regularly mine Black Twitter for content ideas and go on and publish them on their own site without any sort of accreditation. Mind you, these three sites makes millions of dollars off of their online content.

Just because YOU don't understand it doesn't mean it's not valid.
....those are some real powerful examples you just dropped. A fuckin TV show and a book...if this is the sum of revolution then we are fucked.

Alot of people commenting on black twitter don't even check on it. What do you know about it?

Nothing. Because their is nothing to know. The shit ain't like some super secret database for revolutionaries It's just another space for people to play pretend on the internet.

they thought the jokes would be funny...

until ugk sat them down w/ that ether...

It wasn't a joke...it was an observation

For the record I don't follow "black twitter"

But when they was talking about Jaheim's suit...struggle plates...drakes no new friends pics...or Miguel's nuts slam jump "black twitter" was easy to find

EXACTLY :lol::lol: Only a few people commenting in this thread know what they're talking about. "Black Twitter" had nothing to do with these revolutions you speak of. I actually follow "Ice", "Nerd" and a bunch of the "Black Twitter" crowd. They are dumb but entertaining.

Y'all in here trying to put a blanket on this thing like it affected the revolution in Egypt or any other significant world changes. Twitter and Black twitter are tw0 totally different things.

I agree "yes, twitter can be a powerful tool, but Black Twitter is not a tool for anything but laughs.

A dude on my timeline posted a good question after the Trayvon decision. He said all these millions of people on here and we don't have 2 from our community who could come up with a tangible and sustained idea for black folks. I'm pretty sure "Black Twitter" clowned him then went back to the daily routine of talking about nothing of substance.

Y'all need to research more before you make a thread. At least if you talk about Black twitter name some of the people y'know. Dragonfly Jonez, Ice, etc.

twitter, like school, bgol, ur job or any other on or offline community.... is what u make it.

there are smart people that make up "black twitter". some of them are in that video i posted. there are dumb people. there are people who are bout shit. there are people who aint bout shit. there are strippers. there are scholars. there are people w/ interesting perspectives and people who are boring as fuck.

like dude said, ur feed is a reflection of u... not black twitter.

real shit.

i said years ago, although obviously i wasn't the first to think it...the internet will be their structures downfall.

hiding knowledge is how they win...they can't control this bitch.

Not really. INACTION is how they win these days, and that's inaction on the part of black people.

Rocky don't tweet.

Ok Machete

:smh::lol: Okay. I'll be waiting for the revolution to occur........Just another reason for people to sit at the computer and not get off their ass. If ya'll want to do something get off ya'll ass and do it.

Dude if you want them to get off their asses and do something, tell them Drake is gonna be at an event, free before 10PM.

Exactly. Let me tell you the difference between how twitter helped to overthrow middle eastern governments and over here in America.

In the Middle East, THEY GOT OFF THEIR ASSES AND HIT THE STREETS. They risked personal injury and even death to fight for what they believed in.

In America, they held rallies about Trayvon Martin, but when it was convenient for the state. No one was protesting or blocking access to the streets or anything Monday - Saturday. Just a bunch of fingers pressing buttons and listening to their fearless jeri-curl leader Sharpton.

In fact, today marks the 1 month anniversary of the verdict. What has changed black twitter???

Lol...you keep bringing up what's on someone's feed and people keep telling you they aren't even following most of these people

Personally I think twitter is a powerful tool...just on a seo standpoint...and if I'm following a breaking story twitter is a great place to get up to the minute updates...I also like to check out twitter to get a feel of what topics are trending and what people are taking about

But black twitter? Most of the most ignant but funny shit is created by them...for every 1 trayvon Martin topic there are 3 more ignorant silly ones...I remember when I first started getting on twitter to test it's functionality (I work with and study social media)....I would go in on the trending topics and most of my retweets were the silly ones

I see the opportunity you all speak of utilizing it however you can't ignore the majority of its current function...which makes it an uphill battle

He keep saying it's who I'm following. Yeah it is because I was around in 2008-2009 when the term "Black Twitter" was coined. It's 2013 and you trying to tell me who and what it is is hilarious. Probably funnier than you think because it makes you sound really foolish.

Black twitter was a group of dudes who were in the music industry or bloggers and former pornstars and strippers. Mya G is a queen of black twitter. Officially Ice is a King of black twitter.

"Black Twitter" isn't just black people but mostly. AND it is about clowning. Research deeper than what you've been told bro. I've been there from the beginning of it and know what it is specifically. Argue with facts if you want to argue, but it's nothing new and people defining it 5 yrs. later are hilarious.

fam... im not interested in making this some corny twitter pissing contest.

but for the record i been fuckin w/ twitter for yrs. actually i was part of a group that organized and was monitoring the polls for potential fuckery during baracks 1st election. we had a few dozen lawyers on deck that knew the laws in different jurisdictions and a hashtag that anyone could use if they suspected problems at the polls so we could deal w/ them in realtime. u can look back thru my threads if u want. that wld have to be 07-08 i guess. im pretty sure i posted it.

anyway the term "black twitter" has been adopted by many different groups so its not just 1 group of ignant niggas like yall are making it out to be.

ive used and seen other people use twitter to organize people... black people... for different causes. "black twitter" is a big reason why stop and frisk is on the hotseat in nyc.

and aint nothin wrong with mf's clowning and shit. there some funny mf's on the internet... but there's alot more going on that u might not be aware of. that's all im saying.

and i keep mentioning ur feed cuz u basically can decide who and what u see so if all u seeing is 90% ignorance and strippers who fault is that. aint shit wrong with that but im saying dont blame black twitter for it...

Trash, best to network in Linkedin. Twitter is more for short news and shout outs.

Its all in how you use it. I have gotten introductions which lead to clients from Twitter on a business tip. LinkedIn is vital as well if you know how to leverage it.

Sending people invites to connect without follow through like most people is not the right strategy.

Some of the kids on there are really creative man. There's a guy named bbillions that has developed a huge following through that black twitter.

My students told me about it, he's immature but funny. Interesting to see new age entrepreneurship, glad our youth is out in front.

The Barack thing is good for the past...it seems like it was organized so something could actually be done rather quickly, a great implementation of the tool.

But if other organizations have adopted the use of the "black twitter" name, then it's original intent and purpose has been mad diluted to the point of irrelevance. Like the SCLC and NAACP, they were once good, but now ain't about shit. Who really respects then present-day?

If there is "other shit" going on, then let us know about it. Otherwise I would continue to see it as propaganda that is much ado about nothing. People love to add a label to themselves to make them seem better than what they are, or like they are actually involved. But if there is no civil disobedience or disruption involved in order to cause real change, ain't no way I would give credence to two words that amount to shit compared to the plight of Middle Eastern citizens who do way more than just type and talk.

honestly i dont even really like the black twitter label.

im just pointing out that fact that

a. the term is too broad to try to pin down.
b. there's a buncha shit going on in social media pertaining to black people and/or justice

yes there's hoes and jokes too which is always cool but its all in what ur looking for...

TV and books. Two forms of media. How do 99% of the population get their information/form their opinion from?

The media.

What do 99% of the population do with such information?

Shit.

Sweeping statement that is inaccurate.

Action can be manifested in a number of different ways. Too numerous to list here.
Moreover, inaction can be action - not supporting the book publisher with your business.
Sharing that knowledge is action. And there is a chance that knowledge is shared with someone who is in your so-called 1% who mobilizes mass action.

Before any steps can be made, information must be passed along first.

And would you prefer the alternative? Not knowing at all?

I would prefer people get off their asses and do something productive. Something that will push a movement forward.

Knowledge sharing is action? Hardly. The nightly news shares information but where is the action behind that?

Boycotts are ineffective in today's times. They aren't sustainable. So are marches on Sunday. People are on auto-pilot, and unless you do something to disrupt their daily flow, their day will go on as usual. If they can take one minute to sigh a petition, they might, but if you ask for 8 hours of unpaid protest at the capital on Tuesday, who is going to take off work for that?

And that's the problem with people today. If it's not convenient or in their schedule, nothing gets done. That's the problem with inaction.

And if you have these so-called examples, nothing is stopping you from naming 1 or 2. But just saying that they exist with out proof or a link to proof means you really aren't trying to advance whatever cause you may know about. You have uttered just mere words with no follow through.

I would get behind a movement if it were real and brought to my attention. I had mad respect for the Occupy Wall Street movement, because they DID something. Enlighten us to something today that is actually being DONE.

As my grandma used to say, "Words don't boil water". What happens on "Scandal" doesn't matter in the real world. What one of the jurors had to say in a book doesn't matter in the real world. ENTERTAINMENT IS NOT REALITY!

If you really want to effect change start by logging off the internet and actually doing something meaningful.

he was at the back of the class making the same argument to the teacher

And that's what people forget about the civil rights movement, people actually went to jail, lost jobs and tons of other shit behind that. The problem with Social media is it's waaaaayyy to easy to ACT like your down for the cause, when in reality you could give two fucks about an issue if it meant missing a meal or two.

And most of the folks on the internet aren't who they say the are anyway. It's like a digital Atlanta.:smh:

Are you two out on the front lines trying to enact change? I'm seriously asking. If so, what are you doing? No shots.

i would say look at th impact twitter is having on ending stop and frisk in ny.

the internet is a tool. just like a shovel.

u would be stupid to argue that the internet isn't helping organize movements all over the world.

I just watched the first 10 minutes of it. The first story was about someone taking a picture of the Hudson River Plane crash and posting it on Twitter. The second story was about someone taking a picture of the Boston Marathon bombings, and posting it on Twitter. Again, if this is the revolution of which you speak we are thoroughly fucked. How about you put the fuckin camera down and ***gasp*** HELP SOMEONE!!

...but no, I'm the retard...gotcha....

Are you two out on the front lines trying to enact change? I'm seriously asking. If so, what are you doing? No shots.

It's pointless to be "on the front lines" if you are the only one out there. You wouldn't even be considered a martyr. The key to the civil rights movement was ACTION in numbers. Taking emotion and putting it into raw action.

If I stand in the street to stop traffic, I'll be arrested and possibly deemed unfit for civilization. If 2000 people stand in the street to stop traffic, now people want to understand what is going on. If 200,000 people stand in the streets to stop traffic, for a sustained amount of time, there are two choices: give in to the will of the people, or destroy them to inspire real fear (and consequently, rebellion).

Tell me of a cause that is willing to do something like this, and I would join it. But I'm not attending any more rallies held on the weekend (Fri - Sun).

Even Lean On Me effected change:

1.) You admit you didn't watch the whole thing yet you are making judgements.
2.) Breaking news of a near disastrous accident and how Twitter was instrumental in the dissemination of news re: Boston bombing and the search for the culprits isn't revolutionary to you?

No offense dude, but you need to expand your definition of revolution. If you think the only revolution involves guns and pitchforks and marches, you are living in a time long past. Your old school marches are now hundreds of retweets.

What the hell do you think is the strength of social media? NUMBERS!

Dude, we're closer to the Jetsons that we are the Flintstones.

What's more effective? A thousand people marching on a building's doorstep or 50,000 people tweeting/posting to every digital platform they are protesting against?

What's more effective, relying on the local news to report your march and air in on the local news and in the newspaper or having every news organization, blog, etc, post/retweet all of the content being posted on social media from the thousands of people posting about in online?

You don't think the Black Panthers of the 60s wouldn't be all over social media today? They would understand the power of that digital tool in their hands. Social media is media and it lays in the hand of the user. Media has dictated this country's entire history and now you have the power you dismiss it because you don't understand it. :smh:

Are you two out on the front lines trying to enact change? I'm seriously asking. If so, what are you doing? No shots.

Most recently? I got a bench warrant for a young brotha thrown out of Rockville District Court, pro bono. I successfully defended a lady against a Midland Funding collection action, pro bono. Is this some shit that's gonna be trending on twitter? Probably not. Did I effect change? I think so. I effected more change than all those people who took pictures in Hoodies, got all on the radio, TV, Twitter, and marched in front of government property (while it was closed). I did more than them!

Everyone can enact change just by engaging with the people around them. That's the key word, engage! Don't get so caught up in what's going on online when it's plenty of work to be done in your own backyard. Everything doesn't have to be a homerun, headline grabbing, big tent event. Now log off and go out there and hit some singles!

1. That shit has a runtime of damn near 45 minutes, the 10 minutes I gave was charity.

2. I think you need to do some reading my friend.
