Tom Izzo Blasts ESPN’s Dan Dakich For What He Tweeted

Michigan State’s head coach doesn’t appear to be a fan of ESPN’s Dan Dakich.

Tom Izzo blasted ESPN college basketball analyst Dan Dakich following Michigan State’s win over Ohio State in East Lansing, Mich. tonight.

The Spartans’ head coach was upset with Dakich’s tweets about the Spartans and his program. It’s unclear right now what exact tweets Izzo was talking about, but the ESPN analyst has been critical, often calling the program out for “whining.”

Izzo went off in his post-game press conference, first mentioning the fact that he was OK with his student section taunting Dakich throughout the game and later saying he’s not sure why ESPN would let someone like him work for them.

Michigan State Alum Jemele Hill Responds To Dan Dakich’s Diss Of School’s Academics
Michigan State alum Jemele Hill has weighed in on Dan Dakich’s diss of the school’s academics.

Tuesday night, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo teed off on ESPN college basketball commentator Dan Dakich for a tweet he sent earlier in the week that suggested that Michigan State students couldn’t get into Michigan. Wednesday, ESPN’s resident Michigan State homer Jemele Hill, who attended the school, also responded.

Hill, who said she has met and likes Dakich, made it clear that she thinks dissing the school’s academics takes things a bit too far. She noted that she chose Michigan State over Michigan because of its journalism program.

Dakich tweeted earlier in the day that he’s reached out to Izzo to mend fences. We assume he’ll issue a statement after some sort of meeting has taken place.

P.S. Hill is fine. Y'all let a bad photo fuck with your heads. She clearly doesn't look like Van Exel on tape.

Early ratings are decent for ‘SC6’ with Jemele Hill and Michael Smith
ESPNBy Alex Putterman on 02/17/2017
Jemele HillMichael SmithSC6

Depending whom you ask, SC6 might be another brave venture away from a stale old highlight-centric model and toward a personality-driven one, as well as a deserved showcase for two talented people with styles and backgrounds that give the show a fresh feel. Or it might be a sad departure from the SportsCenter of yore, featuring an inexperienced duo that most of their audience doesn’t relate to.
In some ways, SC6 is a referendum on ESPN’s new direction with SportsCenter. Though we’ve seen several SportsCenter iterations in the last couple years break from the time-tested template, this one goes further than any before. If the show succeeds, ESPN might feel emboldened to experiment with more non-traditional highlight shows, and if it fails, the network might reconsider the personality-centered approach.

For this reason, a lot of people feel invested in the success or failure of this show.

(How Smith and Hill look and speak undoubtedly also affects how people view SC6, which is a thorny subject that deserves deeper consideration another day.)

SC6 has only been on the air for two weeks, but some early ratings are in, via Sports TV Ratings, and given all the interest, we’re going to put aside our small-sample-size concerns and share them.

So, acknowledging that these are very, very early returns, here’s what we know about SC6’s ratings so far:

So basically, SC6 is doing fine. Yes, viewership is down from corresponding days last year, but a lot of that clearly owes to a greatly diminished lead-in from PTI (which has to be a bit troubling in itself for ESPN, but that’s another conversation).

ESPN devoted a lot of energy to promoting SC6 and surely would have loved to start off with incredible ratings, but this is certainly not the disaster some of the show’s skeptics predicted. The guess here is that ESPN higher-ups are satisfied, if not thrilled.

Of course, you can’t really learn much from seven days of ratings on a show designed for the long haul. The jury is definitely still out on SC6 and probably will be for a long time.

I have to be that guy I guess. This is the worst version of sports center I've ever seen. Which would probably explain why their ratings are going to shit for this show.

Exactly what happened to Jemele Hill and Michael Smith at ESPN on Wednesday
There's more to the story.

FILE - THIS IS A FEB. 3, 2017, FILE PHOTO SHOWING JEMELE HILL ATTENDING ESPN: THE PARTY 2017 IN HOUSTON, TEXAS. ESPN SAYS IT HAS ACCEPTED THE APOLOGY OF ITS "SPORTSCENTER" HOST JEMELE HILL FOR TWEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK THAT PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP WAS A "WHITE SUPREMACIST" AND "BIGOT." (PHOTO BY JOHN SALANGSANG/INVISION/AP, FILE)
exclusively reported that amid brewing controversy over Jemele Hill’s tweets calling President Donald Trump a “white supremacist,” ESPN had initially tried to keep Hill off the air on Wednesday for the 6:00 p.m. ET broadcast of SportsCenter.

Two sources close to the situation told ThinkProgress that Hill’s co-host, Michael Smith, refused to go on the air without her, as did two black anchors ESPN asked to serve as fill-ins. Eventually, ESPN called Hill back to the studio and the show went on as usual.

ThinkProgress spoke with ESPN prior to publication and they provided a response that was included in the original article. After the article was published, ESPN provided numerous outlets, including ThinkProgress, an additional statement: “We never asked any other anchors to do last night’s show. Period.”

ESPN used this short statement to suggest that ThinkProgress’ initial report was inaccurate. It generated headlines like “ESPN denies trying to bench Jemele Hill for calling Trump ‘white supremacist’” and “ESPN denies report it tried to pull Jemele Hill off the air Wednesday.”

But ThinkProgress has subsequently learned more details about exactly what happened on Wednesday to Hill and Smith. In light of these new facts, ESPN’s “denial” is much less than meets the eye.

Here is what actually happened, according to four sources familiar with the situation who spoke with ThinkProgress on the condition of anonymity.

Late Wednesday morning, after a contentious meeting, a top executive at ESPN told Hill to go home. She was seen in the parking lot around 11:30 a.m. ET, the time she is usually in meetings to plan out the show.

When he learned that Hill was sent home, Smith immediately made it known that he would not appear on the 6 p.m. broadcast without her. That left ESPN with no hosts for its flagship show, scheduled to start in just a few hours.

ESPN then reached out to multiple anchors, including Elle Duncan and Michael Eaves, the two anchors mentioned in the original report, to check their availability for the 6:00 p.m. show. According to sources, Duncan and others told ESPN they were not available to fill in. ThinkProgress has subsequently learned that ESPN reached out to other anchors regarding their availability, including white hosts.

Some sources who spoke to ThinkProgress said they believed ESPN preferred to replace Jemele Hill and Michael Smith with a black host. Other sources pushed back strongly against this notion, saying that ESPN was in a crisis mode and looking for anyone to fill in, regardless of race.

In follow-up discussions, ThinkProgress reached out to ESPN to offer the opportunity to answer the following questions on the record:

  1. Was Jemele Hill sent home late Wednesday morning?
  2. Did Michael Smith, shortly thereafter, refuse to do the show without Jemele?
  3. Did ESPN producers reach out to other anchors at the network to check their availability for the 6:00 SportsCenter on Wednesday?
In response, an ESPN spokesperson refused to answer, saying only, “we are going to respectfully decline additional comment.”

A full picture of Wednesday’s events reveals that ESPN’s post-publication statement was, at a minimum, highly misleading. It can be regarded as true, only if you accept the fine distinction between asking other anchors to “do last night’s show” and asking the same anchors if they are available to do the show.

Throughout the week, ESPN’s handling of the controversy has been subject to withering criticism.

This controversy began on Monday night, when Hill tweeted that “Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself [with] other white supremacists.”

On Tuesday, ESPN escalated the controversy when it released a statement saying that Hill’s comments “do not represent the position of ESPN.” Wednesday afternoon at a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the tweets were a “fireable offense.”

Hill released a statement on Twitter late Wednesday night saying that her comments on Twitter were her personal beliefs, but she regretted that they “painted ESPN in an unfair light.” On Friday morning, Trump weighed on on the situation.

Hill still has not deleted her original tweets.

Michael Smith: ESPN ‘muted’ Jemele Hill and I, ruined ‘SC6’
NICHOLAS PARCO FEB 8, 2018 8:55 PM

Michael Smith, like former “SC6” co-host Jemele Hill always has, is speaking his mind.

Smith went in on ESPN management during a recent interview on James Andrew Miller’s “Origins” podcast, saying the network ‘muted’ himself and Hill when a new executive took over “SC6” and that it “frustrated the s--- out of us.”

He also said that prior to the “muting,” higher-ups at ESPN had made it known that one of the best things about “SC6” was the comradery between him and Hill, who has since left the show to write for ESPN's The Undefeated.

“There was a time we weren’t even talking to each other (during broadcasts) anymore,” he told Miller. “Like no more Michael and Jemele, not less, not here and there. No more Michael and Jemele talking. No more of their commentary. It’s just strictly live shots and analysts. That’s what pissed me off so much.”

“I’m like, so wait a second, you all acknowledge that one of the strengths that we have going for us as a show is Michael and Jemele’s chemistry, but Michael and Jemele don’t f-----g talk to each other? How does that make sense?”

The decree to talk to each other less during the show came down from new ESPN executive Norby Williamson, who took over “SC6” after Hill was suspended by the network for suggesting NFL fans boycott the Cowboys. That didn’t exactly sit well with ESPN management, seeing how the network has TV deals with the league. Before the suspension, Hill became a target of the White House and President Trump when she called him a "white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists" on Twitter.

“We knew we were gonna get s--- out of the gate... But we weren’t built to take it,” Smith said. “Immediately we started pushing the panic button. Instead of saying no, this is the vision for this show, this is what we’re doing.

“This show is about Michael and Jemele and their opinions and their chemistry, and they’re going to do ‘SportsCenter’ their way. Instead of sticking to that vision, we immediately tried to merge two things.”

While Hill has continuously expressed to angry Twiter egg heads that she left to work for The Undefeated and was not demoted there, Smith says ESPN “got what they wanted."

“It was very frustrating,” he said, “Behind the scenes and on camera. … They got what they wanted, which was Michael and Jemele being muted. And that frustrated the s--- out of us.”

Report: ESPN's Gutless Future Will Not Include Jemele Hill

One week after new president Jimmy Pitaro articulated his bold new vision for the future of ESPN—neuter it and lay submissively at the feet of Roger Goodell—comes a report that Jemele Hill will be leaving the company later this week:

James Miller describes the separation as “amicable.” Sporting News rounds out that nugget with a little more detail:

The former “SportsCenter” anchor will accept a buyout of the remainder of her contract with the network, said sources. Hill’s deal with ESPN still has at least two years to run and she stands to walk away with millions of dollars from ESPN parent Disney while she pursues other career opportunities, sources said.

Hill ran afoul of ESPN’s constitutional cowardice at least twice in the last year, and that was before Pitaro showed his belly to NFL owners and MAGA chuds on Monday. The first was for using her Twitter account to say something factually true about our senile amoral grifter of a President; and later she was suspended for two weeks for observing that boycotts are an effective form of protest. She remains deeply unpopular with both the “stick to sports” crowd and the “black people are the real racists” crowd—that Venn diagram is nearly a perfect circle—and earlier this summer Fox News spent a whole segment doing a touchdown dance over a wet dream of Hill being fired by ESPN. Her departure will be met by relief from NFL owners and huzzahs from the very worst people on earth. Hopefully she’ll find her way to a role with a company that hasn’t dedicated itself to courting favor with those two hideous groups of people.

Jemele Hill to Launch 'Unbothered' Podcast on Spotify (Exclusive)

The show, which debuts in March, will feature Hill's signature honest analysis of American life.
Jemele Hill is bringing her voice to Spotify.

The journalist is launching a podcast in March that will feature her signature honest analysis of American life, it was announced at CES. Called Unbothered, the show will release new episodes twice a week and will include Hill, her co-hosts and a rotating cast of high-profile guests exploring the news of the week, from sports to politics to music to identity to culture.

"Spotify and I are very like-minded," Hill said in a statement. "We both believe in being bold and authentic. I am thrilled to get the opportunity to stretch myself in a much different way, with a support system that I believe will bring out the best in me. I look forward to sharing my perspective and experience with Spotify’s many listeners across the world."

Hill spent 12 years at ESPN, writing for the website, serving as a college football sideline reporter, hosting SportsCenter and, most recently, covering the intersection of sports, culture and race for ESPN's The Undefeated. During her time at the network, she has been vocal about issues relating to race and politics. In 2017 she made headlines for calling President Donald Trump a white supremacist on Twitter, which resulted in criticism from the White House. ESPN later suspended her for two weeks for her critical tweets about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Hill, who is repped by Exit 39, CAA and Jackoway Tyerman, left ESPN in September and was named a staff writer at The Atlantic one month later. Since she joined, she has written stories about Beto O'Rourke, the 2018 midterm elections and the Obamas.

On Unbothered, she is expected to cover a range of issues, from athletes talking about race to Usher's new perm. Each episode will range in length from 60 to 75 minutes.

"Jemele is an important voice in sports, race, culture and politics, and their intersection in media,” said Spotify Studios head Courtney Holt. "She will bring her unique point of view to our platform with Unbothered, which is sure to be a favorite of listeners with diverse interests and viewpoints."

Unbothered joins a growing roster of original podcasts for Spotify, including Amy Schumer's 3 Girls, 1 Keith and The Joe Budden Podcast. Spotify, which has 200 million users worldwide, is looking to podcasts to help it draw a broader audience and to differentiate itself from other music streaming platforms.
