How 'Brotherman' Forever Changed Comics

The first black superhero in mainstream American comic books was the Black Panther, introduced by Marvel in 1966, but there have been other influential characters since then. Brothermancomics is the story of a public prosecutor who hits the streets at night, seeking justice. That series helped change the way African-Americans are portrayed in comics. An exhibit about the series is at Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue Research Library. Emory University also created a virtual world from the Brotherman universe, which will be featured at the Decatur Book Festival. We talked with Atlanta-based comic book artist Dawud Anyabwile, co-creator of the series.

Committed to finding a way to right wrongs, protect the many, and dispense justice, Antonia Valor, delved deeper and deeper into a place where many dare to tread. A brilliant attorney presented with career opportunities that would b a pathway to both political power and monetary fortune, Antonio chose the path forged by his father, Leonard valour and serves at the behest of the big city, as a public attorney, long hours, low wages and little support, Antonio alongside fellow P.A Melody Rich and district attorney duke denim realizes that he is at an impasse for the citizens of big city. Guided impressions of his father, teachings of the mysterious Moyo and the experience of a system long corrupted, Antonio realized it was time to go beyond….beyond the civil chasm of law enforcement wherein lies a plateau requiring stealth and cold determination. On the eve of resolution, Antonio took that one bold step beyond!
Standing in the cold shadows of corruption, Brotherman, the clandestine guise of Antonio Valor, is the floodlight of justness, the siren for the law, and the hand of discipline. Ever poised to confound, confront and correct criminals, miscreants, charlatans and other agents of atrocities, brotherman wages a war in the shadows, dispensing his law of the night. Armed only with his wits, his mana, his resolve, brotherman’s aura cloaks big city, standing as the buttress against the wrongs that befall us all. It has been whispered in the shadows murmured in crowds, echoed in subways, and tagged on the walls and hearts of the citizens of big city….he’s here and everything’s going to be alright!
