Percy Lavon Julian (April 11, 1899 – April 19, 1975) was an American research chemist and a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants.[1] He was the first to synthesize the natural product physostigmine, and a pioneer in the industrial large-scale chemical synthesis of the human hormones progesterone and testosterone fromplant sterols such as stigmasterol and sitosterol. His work laid the foundation for the steroid drug industry's production of cortisone, other corticosteroids, and birth control pills.

He later started his own company to synthesize steroid intermediates from the wild Mexican yam. His work helped greatly reduce the cost of steroid intermediates to large multinational pharmaceutical companies, helping to significantly expand the use of several important drugs.

Julian received more than 130 chemical patents. He was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate inchemistry. He was the first African-American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, and the second African-American scientist inducted (behind David Blackwell) from any field.

Plus their new white victim told them about PLJ on his breakfast club interview...

Black history isn't worth knowing unless a white man tells them about it.

I have no issue learning about black history from a non black person... It's funny, in my 32 years on earth not 1 black person shed any light on this brother... Not a single 1... I'm not into faking the funk. I didn't know, I'd be willing to bet most with their black panther berets didn't know either... Knowledge is knowledge. Is swear some people just wanna be smug, for the sake of being smug...

If you say so....it's not like his life and accomplishments were hidden....Had you wanted to know you would have talking bout not 1 person shed light ? Wonder who shed light for the white boy ? Bet you couldn't tell him shit about his history he don't know.

Guess you never had any interest in reading about black scientists and inventors. :smh:

Bet there ain't much you don't know about a fukkn rapper.

It has to come from somewhere man. You know everything there is to know about black history??? I sure as fuck dont. Black history may not be hidden , but it sure as fuck isn't out in the open either. You drop jewels, but I've never seen you drop this brother... Not saying you didn't know... But like I said... Not 1 black person mentioned him before today in my travels. My thing is... Why low key insult people for not knowing??? Is the board, hell this month, about bringing exposure to our history??? I just don't understand why the need to dis people who may not know as much about this particular subject.

My point is it's in books but you have to want to know. It's not insulting for not knowing it's questioning why mainstream things aren't know ? Why there isn't the thirst to know , to read to talk to old folks that lived during the times ?

When you hear about how black folks invented shit but were not allowed to get patents and some crakka got right of their work should make you want to find out more.

And it isn't like you have to go to the library and hope they have certain books today, it's all on the internet.

Like I said though it starts with wanting to know.

Example being we always heard about Rosewood and Tulsa but wanting to know more led me to learning about the Colfax Massacre and wanting to know more because that is where my mother is from.

Knowledge is there if the motivation to know is also there

Of course I knew of him and he was taught just like George Washington Carver not to mention that my son graduate from Percy L. Julian High School.

Dang always heard how hard it was for us to get patents on shit..this dude was able to get over that hump... thats whats up... not to mention helping pave the way for the cortisone shots people take wow..

Oak Park History

Originally built in 1901 as 64th Street School and later known as Hawthorne School, it was named for Julian in the 1980s. The new structure opened in September 2002.

Who is Percy Lavon Julian?

Born April 11, 1899, in Montgomery, Alabama, Percy L. Julian is best known for his achievements in chemistry, producing chemicals in the laboratory previously only available from nature. His work with chemicals used to make sex hormones led to improved treatment for some forms of cancer and pregnancy disorders. These and other chemicals Dr. Julian produced in the laboratory, including cortisone, which relieves arthritis pain, became less expensive to manufacture and more widely available through his research.
