Kan. Black Lives Matter Turns Planned Protest Into Cookout With Police

Officers played basketball with community members and served hamburgers and hot dogs, but it wasn’t all fun and games. The cookout had a Q&A where officers addressed racial profiling, transparency and building community relationships.

A Wichita, Kan., Black Lives Matter group was planning a protest march on Sunday as the nation continued to grapple with the recent string of fatal shootings of black men by police and of police by gunmen. However, the Wichita Eagle reports, after speaking with Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay, the group decided that instead of a protest, they would hold a cookout Tuesday at a local park along with the police.

The change was meant to open up lines of communication and build trust between police and the community, the news site reports, and the barbecue drew people from all racial backgrounds and of all ages.

Seated at one table were three men—black, Hispanic and white—sitting next to Lt. Travis Rakestraw to talk about their ideas. Jarvis Scott, the black man, said that it was the first time since 1992 that he had sat down with an officer. The other two said that it was their first time ever meeting with an officer like this.

“It takes two parties to make a healthy relationship,” Ramsay said, according to USA Today.

According to USA Today, officers served hamburgers and hot dogs and played basketball with members of the community. There was also dancing and bounce houses and bubbles.

However, it wasn’t all fun and games. There was also a Q&A where Chief Ramsay took questions from the community. According to the Eagle, community members took the opportunity to speak out. Among the first questions: Were the police buying off the community with food, and how would the event help with racial profiling?

Another woman addressed her own experiences with police and said that she had been mistreated. Ramsay assured the crowd that every officer would have a body camera and that residents would be able to look at footage with him when complaints about officers were made.

“If you feel mistreated, I want to know about it,” Ramsay said. “If they feel they are being mistreated, at the scene is not the time to argue about it; wait until it’s over.

“Loud and clear, I have zero tolerance for racial profiling or racial bias,” he added.

USA Today notes that Ramsay encouraged other police departments and communities to try to build the same relationship.

“I do want to challenge other police departments and communities to do the same things with [a] community cookout,” he said.

Police officer's breakdance moves during community barbecue

Police cookouts, cops who can spit rap lyrics & dance, and other such tactics are all just a diversion and a palliative in order to avoid the real issues of "white supremacy" and the "blue wall of silence"

In the 1990's here in New York City the white neo-liberal establishment came up with MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL

Let's get these ninja 'bucks' off the streets at night so that we whites can walk around peacefully & enjoy our iced hazelnut lattes. Hey maybe we can make some $$$$ money off of "Midnight Basketball", let's send in a few NBA scouts, one of these street ninja ballplayers might be good enough to make a NBA team; what a great movie that would make.

Africans residing in America— African-Americans;
Especially the so-called "leadership class" what W.E.B. DuBois called the "Talented Tenth"
have steadfastly refused to realize that the overwhelming majority of "whites" regardless of their politics — really don't give a shit about you Blacks.

This is why "white supremacy" has endured for hundreds of years since 1452 when Pope Nicholas V issued the papal bull Dum Diversas.

Democratic liberal New York politician Mario Cuomo, a man of Italian heritage, a ethnic group who only became officially "white" in America in the 1940's, was once asked in the 1980's to explain why blue collar lower middle class whites (Irish, Italians, Greeks) were so vociferously angry about federally paid for housing that was coming to their neighborhood that would house primarily Blacks & "Ricans" . He was asked if these people were racist? He said no, he said that none of these people would complain if it was Al Roker or Lena Horne moving to the neighborhood. In other words the "good Blacks" were acceptable.

To much, in fact — almost all of so-called Black leadership are trying too hard to be the "good Blacks"— who are called upon by the white establishment to calm down the righteous indignation of the 90% Black masses.

395 years ago in 1621 the African, Anthony Johnson a Angolan arrives in the English colony Jamestown Virginia and he becomes a prosperous FREE African farmer. By August of 1670, a white jury in a Virginia court strips him of his FREEDOM deciding that “he was a Negro and by consequence an alien,” —ownership of the 250 acres Johnson owned was seized and given to the King of England.

What lessons have African-Americans learned since 1621.
We haven't learned one critical lesson, despite 400 years of barbarous repression, torture , and violence against the Black body. — The intellectual whose picture is on the $100 bill once said to his fellow revolutionaries when they decided to secede from the English empire—
"We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."

Black Americans have not learned this lesson and we're on our way to the year 2017

I would have loved to attend this event, it sounds like a good idea.

1. Why have they not stepped up their ID system using numbers that you can give, facial recognition or fingerprint scanner. You can put your hands on the wheel at all times making it safer.

2. Put up permanent signs that show your speed in key areas instead of camping out police for tickets. Looking down at your speed is unsafe and takes your eyes off the road in these critical areas.

3. Emphasize that being alert and pre identifying potential hazards/dangers is more critical than maintaining your speed. An alert driver driving over the speed limit is more safe than somebody driving the speed limit and not paying attention because they are constantly checking their speedometer to avoid driving 1 mph.

4. Giving out tickets without pulling you over for non felons or anybody without a serious traffic offense such as a DUI. Have it emailed to you. Quit using a traffic offense as a reason to charge for other offenses. Demote speeding under 15 mph as a parking ticket, a civil infraction.
