Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Cullors took to Instagram on Sunday to reveal that her cousin, Keenan Anderson, has died, saying he was killed by the Los Angeles Police Department last week. Cullors wrote a heartfelt post on her official page as she paid tribute to her relative who had allegedly gotten into a scuffle with cops during a taser incident in Venice, California on January 3.
Per the police report, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene of a car crash Anderson was involved in just before 4 PM. He’d been asked a series of questions pertaining to the incident before officers requested backup units to determine whether the crash could have resulted in a possible DUI offense. When they arrived, however, it’s claimed that Anderson tried to flee the scene by running away and “exhibiting erratic behavior,” the LAPD said.
The report claims that cops used “taser, bodyweight, firm grips, and joint locks to overcome his resistance” when they caught him minutes later. He was taken to a hospital in Santa Monica for his injuries, where he later died after going into cardiac arrest, with police ruling his demise as an in-custody death. “My cousin was an educator and worked with high school-aged children. He was an English teacher,” Cullors wrote in her Instagram post.
“LAPD has killed three people this year. One of them is my family member. Keenan deserves to be alive right now, his child deserves to be raised by his father. Keenan we will fight for you and for all of our loved ones impacted by state violence. I love you.”
A GoFundMe page has since been launched for the sake of Anderson’s son, Syncere, who’s now been left to be brought up without a father.
In the description of the fundraiser, it notes that anyone who knew Anderson knew how much he loved and adored his son. The funds raised from GoFundMe will secure the little boy a future as the family tries to come to terms with the death of their beloved relative.
“Keenan was adamant about raising a well-rounded and properly educated young man,” the GoFundMe reads.
