Black Pupils 'Are Routinely Marked Down by Teachers'

By Anushka Asthana, Toby Helm and Tracy McVeigh

• Teachers' assessment of children's ability is undermined by stereotyping, says research

Black children are being systematically marked down by their teachers who are unconsciously stereotyping them, it has been revealed.

Academics looked at the marks given to thousands of children at age 11. They compared their results in SATs, nationally set tests marked remotely, with the assessments made by teachers in the classroom and in internal tests. The findings suggest that low expectations are damaging children's prospects.

The study concludes that black pupils perform consistently better in external exams than in teacher assessment. The opposite is true for Indian and Chinese children, who tend to be "over-assessed" by teachers. It also finds that white children from very poor neighbourhoods are under-assessed when compared with their better-off peers.

"What is worrying is that if students do not feel that a teacher appreciates them or understands them, then they are not going to try so hard," said Simon Burgess, professor of economics at the University of Bristol and co-author of the report. His study finds that the differences are a result of stereotyping, as opposed to other factors, and are particularly pronounced in areas where there are fewer black children--or fewer children from very poor estates.

The issue of testing is top of the agenda this weekend as the National Union of Teachers urges its members to vote to boycott the SATs test for 11-year-olds this summer. They believe the external tests are distorting education and should be replaced by teachers' assessments. Yesterday, the union used its annual conference in Liverpool to threaten the next government with a "summer of discontent" over public spending cuts and national curriculum tests.

But Burgess, who is director of the Centre for Market and Public Organisation at the university, said his study showed that the tests were the only opportunity some children had to "prove their teachers wrong". He argued: "These findings suggest that going down the route of abolishing key stage tests at age 11 would be a bad idea."

Ed Balls, the secretary of state, said concerns about stereotyping were one reason he did not want to abolish the tests. "There are still schools, particularly in white, working-class communities, where the attitude is 'the children here don't do so well, we do the best with what we have got, aspirations aren't high'," he said. "That is unacceptable."

But teachers rejected the argument yesterday. John Bangs, of the National Union of Teachers, said that if there was stereotyping it should be tackled by improving teacher training so teachers could better assess children themselves--not by retaining SATs. And Mick Brookes, general secretary of the National Association of Headteachers, which is also calling on members to back the boycott, said there were ways of moderating teacher assessment to make it more reliable.

Gloria Hyatt, a former secondary headteacher of black-Caribbean and Irish heritage, said the study confirmed a longstanding complaint made by ethnic minority groups. She now works as an education consultant helping schools to get the best potential out of those who might be "deemed as failures".

"This is not discrimination or racism," said Hyatt. "It is something unconscious. What this study shows is that what we see and what we experience influences our beliefs, attitudes and perceptions. We are conditioned by society, in terms of what comes out of the television about minorities, what we see in books. That says that 'this is the model' and then experiences reinforce that." Hyatt argued that it was hard to go against those pervasive generalisations.

She said she had met teachers who believed "all black children are great at sport" and less able in "English, maths and science". She argued that a "training tool" was needed. "Equal opportunities legislation will not fix this."

Meanwhile, it emerged that the three biggest teaching unions and leaders of the NUS Black Students Campaign have written to the Equality and Human Rights Commission demanding an audit of Britain's schools and universities to uncover race inequality in education. The letter points to the "disturbingly" low numbers of black teaching staff in primary and further education. It says that the London Metropolitan University had more black students than the country's top 20 universities put together.

Peace,

This isn't surprising in the least. That's why I always tell folks that they need to constantly advocate for their school-aged children.

This is why parents should be closely involved in their children's schooling, so that they can pick up on these things...it is after all your child...

Education is the key huh? Yeah I had this happen to me a CAC Brazilian bitch left a key project of mine ungraded and caused me to fail the fucking class. I didn't care though because I transferred that next quarter.

I keep telling y'all...y'all severely underestimate the role white teachers (mostly women) play in black childrens' development from K-12...this only deals w/ the academic aspect and not even the social aspect...

we live in a society where our failures will always be pushed off on someone else. it will always be the teachers faults. :smh::smh::smh:

Surprise surprise

This is why have nothing but contempt for people who downplay the effects of institutional racism. "Why don't you quit whining about racism?" Why don't you STFU and get acquainted with the facts:hmm:

Poverty is the issue here. Poor whites are even given piss poor grades so we know its not really a racial issue but a class issue.

Bruh, it's terrible.

It's easy for them to know what paper or project they're marking too. If there are only 5 blacks kids in a class of 30, you best believe they will remember your name when they're marking your shit.

In my opinion,I think the black male students are subjected to this more then the girls(as long as they are quiet).

I am 16 years old and I quite about 2 months after turning 16 to go get my G.E.D. I went to all the classes and everything, passed the pre-test and had my test reserved to take and then I saw an add on TV for James Madison High School and boy did it so surreal! I jumped at it. It seemed to be the perfect homeschool.....but it wasn't, there A RIP-OFF! I was on the YA yesterday and I saw where altot of people where attending American School and I really got intrested so I starte to research it. I really don't want to only get my G.E.D, I know it's the same, I just want something you really have to work (more) for. I really want to enroll here but I want to know alittle more about it. I'm doing my homework before I waste my money again. Please share your answers with me whether you like them or not, anything will help me! Thanks!

This wouldn't be an issue if we started teaching our own and stop begging the failing gov't to teach our future.

And besides the gov does not even care about education, more concerned with being number 1 in military spending.

a population of meat bodies with guns fighting for their interests is highly desired.

Dont' get it twisted, I'm all about the military and having the most destructive weapons on the planet, but when it comes to African American children, YOU CANNOT RELY ON PUBLIC EDUCATION.

I continuously make the argument against public schooling and parents who really give 2 shits about their children will have a plan mapped out before their child is born. That plan SHOULD NOT include public schooling.

All the money we have flowing in the community and we can't create private schools for our kids?

*waiting on the excuses*

Fuckery happened to me all through school. Now I make more than the most of the Board of Education and I'm more than half their age.

And I went to school in N.VA.

Might be desired but in most cases you still need a GED or high school dip. You didn't catch the Obama radio commercials?

That shit never changes. I'm 57 years old & I still get that shocked look when they find out I graduated from a parochial high school. That, I didn't know black people were smart enough to go there look. smh

A high school diploma is basically worthless.

This is a good article on the state of education in America.

This was the never-ending argument between Booker T Washington (the separatist) and W.E.B Dubois (the liberal one). But considering what "they" did to Dubois during the latter part of his life, if he were alive today, I think he would finally agree with Booker T.

C/S! This single post ought to be sticky'd and required viewing every time someone logs onto BGOL.

two points.

1. individual ambition will always trump whatever parental effort,
2. these article harps on dumb shit like positive reinforcement of feelings and expectations. get the fuck outta here. life is unfair. tell the child that and he'll be stronger and better prepared.

so you want those of us who are middle class to move back into the hood right?

fuck outta here. nobody is moving into the hood by choice. there isn't one middle class neighborhood i'm aware of in the entire northern california. maybe down in LA they got like Baldwin Hills or something.

but lets keep it real when I go to "our" community its fucking dangerous. I was just talking to my dude who lives in the middle of East Oakland, that shit is a goddamn warzone.

I like the sound off all that Booker T Washington shit but in reality? no fucking way is it going to work. the hood is too fucked up.

I do my little volunteering but keep it real "the community" ain't doing shit for me. never really has.

It DOES happen in college, there are assholes teaching there too.

Black males students are constantly singled out, especially when they find out that you are intelligent.

It's like they get a look of desperation in their eyes about keepin' this "******" out of the crop of the top of the class.

Oh, and I agree with Black, it definitely happens in college.

Man, the stories I could tell y'all...:smh:

As a side note Black, I don't think Kaya was saying it doesn't happen. I think he was expressing his disappointment and disgust of it happening...

I had to fight with my numerous Professors in college behind undermarked grades. I used other peers and friends course-work as comparison for proof. I took business classes with a friend of mine (non black), a slacker who clearly wasn't trying to pass the class at all. His hand writing was poor and so was his grammar and punctuation sentence structure and everything. He handed in half ass work and got graded higher than me. That was the first time. I tried to brush it off telling myself maybe I didn't explain things right but that stuck in the back of my mind.

The next time I wrote my papers I went to an English Professor first to look over and review my work before I handed it in to my Business Prof. You know that fucker still scored me lower than my dumb-ass friend. When I took my friends paper and mine to him for comparison I had to argue with that fucker for a better grade on what clearly was a better paper. He finally relented but that wasn't the last time I had to do some shit like that. It became a regular occurrence until I said "Fuck it!" and went to the Dean. This happened with various different teachers. It was disheartening for real.:smh: It came to the point where I didn't know whether I being graded properly or not when they gave me B+ and A- :hmm:
