Bullying at school led a 9-year-old Alabama girl, McKenzie Adams, to take her own life, and racism played a factor in the hateful taunts, the girl’s heartbroken relatives say.

McKenzie, who is black, rode to school at U.S. Jones Elementary School in Demopolis each day with a white family.


"Some of the student bullies would say to her, ‘Why you riding with white people, you’re black, you’re ugly, you should just die,’" her mother, Jasmine Adams, told WIAT CBS 42.

The girl’s aunt, Eddwina Harris, told Tuscaloosa News much of the bullying was centered around McKenzie’s friendship with a boy.

Our kids though....

Even the babies have internalized the hate that slavery and Jim Crow used to separate us from each other....

As a parent, you have to counter that with a lot of love and reinforcement on the child’s self-worth.

RIP....parents and family must be going through hell wondering how they couldnt stop that...guilt gonna be with them for life....we can be extremely vicious with each other....and we start young

I’m not suggesting they did or didn’t know the extent. I was just saying how that type of stuff needs to be dealt with as it pertains to the child.

And I agree, kids do keep things from their parents, but that’s a line of communication that needs to always be open and discussed, especially in a state like Alabama. If the kids ain’t bringing it up, then the parents should be talking about racism.

I started with my daughter as early as 5. My biggest concern was exactly what lead to this little girls suicide. I didn’t want her to think by being black she was anything less than beautiful, bright and intelligent. Then I worked on her confidence.

These were all preemptive attempts to combat the things I’d knew she probably deal with.

I just do not understand, but at the same time, I did not grow up in an all white neighborhood.

I thought I wouldn't ever see or hear this name ever again.."Eddwina" spelled different but it's the same.

Now on this little girl which is sad to hear but,I've seen bullying at it's worse and at it's minimum,these kids have to realize that this is nothing compared to where it could go and standing up for yourself is something you're going to have to do for the rest of your life;4th grade might be hell but 5th grade be one of your best years.

Mental illness and the internet,get your love one help first and unplug the fucking internet at home,phone and make it to where if they need it it's used at the library so it can stop this shit of pretending,trying to live up to other's standards,showing off,advertising yourself,materialist behavior and some more shit;Just don't preach it,you might need to do the same.
It's beyond these kids being weak or spoiled ,their unstable and it hits them pre-teen age or early 20's ; You ever hear about someone going off to college and they come back not the same mentally.....sad
 
They never said what color the bullies where but said she was being bullied for being around white students. Now correct me if I'm wrong this would imply black students did the bullying but somehow I don't think this is the case because if it where so they would have broken their necks to put it in the headlines.
