Netflix Renews Lucifer for Final Fifth Season

It’s the end-times for Lucifer, the show about a sexy crime-fighting devil and all the shirts he takes off. After being canceled by Fox, the show was saved by Netflix for a fourth season. Now the powers that be have decided to give the light-bringer one more concluding season. “We’re thrilled that Lucifer fans around the world have embraced this series on Netflix, and we can’t wait to give them the big finish they’ve all been waiting for,” the company said in a statement reported by Deadline. Lucifer is one of several Neil Gaiman works currently having a second life as TV shows. American Gods is getting a third season on Starz, and Amazon’s Good Omens adaptation premiered earlier this week. Lucifer is probably the most divergent from its source material, as Lucifer in the comics is a cabaret owner and in no way solves murders. Causes a few, though. Lucifer is in the Netflix U.K.’s top-ten titles. With all five seasons on the streaming service, it will be among the platform’s original series with the most episodes.

Amazon also announced that The Expanse has been renewed for a fifth season ahead of the season 4 premiere. After Syfy canceled the series after three seasons, Amazon saved the sci-fi show. The first Amazon season of The Expanse begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. While Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them. Season 4 will premiere on Friday, December 13.
Final season of Lucifer will be split into two parts
The news was revealed in an adorable video from The Kelly Clarkson Show, in which Kelly Clarkson takes her Lucifan mom and sister to the set.

The fifth and final season of Lucifer doesn’t yet have a release date, but thanks to star Tom Ellis and mega-fan Kelly Clarkson, we now know a bit more about the show’s swan song.
In a clip from her new talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer-turned-TV-host treats her mom and sister, who are big fans of Lucifer, to a set visit. The trio freak out about meeting some of the cast from their beloved show, with Clarkson’s sister, Alyssa, hilariously sharing, “I read books — as my sister calls them, ‘naughty books’ — and Tom Ellis is the man I envision, so there you go.”
At the end of the clip, Ellis shares some exclusive news with Clarkson and family. “Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves,” he says. “Netflix is going to drop eight episodes, there’s going to be a little break, and then they’re going to drop another eight more episodes.”
Based on the DC Comics character, Lucifer stars Ellis as the eponymous fallen angel, who abandons his throne in hell to work with the LAPD to take down criminals on Earth. Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Kevin Alejandro, Scarlett Estevez, D.B. Woodside, and Rachael Harris also star in the show.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the buddy-cop comedy canceled by Fox in May 2018 and rescued by NBC, will get an eighth season on its new network — before its seventh season airs. In a release, NBC even calls Brooklyn Nine-Nine a “critically acclaimed and Golden Globe Award–winning comedy,” giving the show’s name the respect it truly deserves. At the end of season six, Terry Crews’s Terry Jeffords was kept at the 99th precinct instead of getting transferred to Staten Island, keeping the “buddy” in buddy cop. While we won’t get any new episodes of Nine-Nine until February, we’ll take the promise of two more seasons of Crews and crushable comedian Andy Samberg on our screens.
Update, 2:15 p.m.: Brooklyn Nine-Nine posted a video on Twitter of the cast learning that season seven wouldn’t be their last. Enjoy Terry Crews excitedly throwing a notebook into the air and banging the table!

The show wrapped its seventh season in April, but star Terry Crews said on Tuesday that showrunner Dan Goor “had four [new] episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in.”
Crews added that the cast has had “a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity here, and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”
The actor called the reaction to the death of George Floyd “Black America’s #MeToo movement.”
“We always knew this was happening,” he said, “but now, white people are understanding.”
Earlier this month, Goor tweeted a message of support for Black Lives Matter, indicating that he and the cast had made a $100,000 contribution to the National Bail Fund.

This summer, the Black Lives Matter protests called for, amongst other things, a reexamine of our nation’s policing, in an effort to end police brutality against Black communities and other vulnerable populations. When it comes to the depiction of police in popular culture, that reexamination extends to the many TV shows and films that depict the police as unilaterally good, morally unimpeachable, and/or justified in using any means necessary to stop crime in its tracks. Or, in the case of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as a bunch of sweet, harmless goofballs. At a preview of his new Hulu movie Palm Springs, Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg said the sitcom is currently “taking a step back” and “rethinking how we’re going to move forward” with the NBC comedy series.
“We’re taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we’re going to move forward, as well as the cast,” Samberg, who has played Detective Jake Peralta on the sitcom since it debuted in 2013 on Fox, moving to NBC last year for its sixth season, told People. “We’re all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now, and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about.” Says the former Saturday Night Live star, “I know that we’ll figure it out, but it’s definitely a challenge, so we’ll see how it goes.”

NBC announced Thursday that the beloved police comedy starring Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher will come to a close after its upcoming eighth season. And before the goodbye comes a long wait: This final batch of 10 episodes (three fewer episodes than last season) won't even air in the 2020-2021 season as initially planned, but is slated to premiere during the 2021-2022 season.
Samberg recently said that Brooklyn Nine-Nine will resume filming on season 8 in the coming weeks; it is, of course, one of many series that shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiered in 2013 on Fox, where it garnered critical acclaim and a cult audience. Brooklyn's soft ratings led its to cancellation by Fox in May 2018 after a five-season run, but a massive outcry from fans and an outpouring of love on social media (including by some high-profile fans including Mark Hamill and Lin-Manuel Miranda) paved the way for NBC to immediately scoop it up and order a sixth season.

While reveling in tomfoolery and absurdity, the series hasn't been afraid to tackle larger social issues, including the discrimination that Braugher's Capt. Holt experienced coming up the ranks as a Black, gay NYPD officer. A season 4 episode explored what happened when Sgt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) was racially profiled while off duty, season 5 installments featured Det. Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) coming out as bisexual and the squad dealing with the effects of an active shooter, a season 6 episode delved into different officers' viewpoints while working on a workplace sexual assault case, and season 7 saw Sgt. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) and Jake (Samberg) struggle to conceive a baby.
The show plans to address police brutality — a deeply ingrained issue in law enforcement that became an urgent national discussion in 2020 — in its final season. "There's nothing funny about what we've been seeing from the police," Samberg said last year. "It's not a laughing matter."
Addressing the show's final season, co-creator and showrunner Dan Goor in a statement Thursday, "I'm so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. When [co-creator] Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, 'I'm in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,' which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned.
"I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for eight seasons," he continued. "They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family. But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world. Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it's ending so soon, but honestly, I'm grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape."
Brooklyn Nine-Nine also stars Joe Lo Truglio, Joel McKinnon Miller and Dirk Blocker.
But the final batch of episodes is delayed until the 2021-2022 season.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally has an exit strategy: The NBC comedy is set to return in August for its final run of ten episodes, the network announced today. While no precise scheduling was announced, NBC said the show will debut right after the end of the Tokyo Olympics (assuming, of course, said Olympics happen). But after Nine-Nine completes its season in late September or early October, NBC will kick off a fall schedule with zero new or returning comedies — the first time the Peacock network has been without autumn laughs in prime time since the dawn of the sitcom in the 1950s.

While TV historians will note the milestone, in reality, NBC’s decision isn’t that big a deal. For one, the network only had two comedies during fall 2015, and both shows — Undateable and Truth Be Told — were buried on Fridays and barely noticed by viewers. And NBC isn’t getting out of the comedy business at all. During a press briefing Friday, execs noted the network had renewed three new comedies for second seasons, and ordered two more, and that all five will return early in 2022 as part of planned comedy blocks on two nights. Saving the laughs for later will allow NBC to launch new dramas behind The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays, while also letting it create a whole night of Law & Order shows on Thursdays. Comedies tend to be harder to launch these days, too, so it makes sense to do it in a less crowded environment than fall.
As for other notable NBC fall developments:
• The Voice will only air one cycle during the 2021–22 TV season, making it the first time the show won’t have a spring edition since its launch. It’s a move many industry insiders had expected for years, since doing two cycles has somewhat hastened the show’s ratings decline.
• The final season of This Is Us will air in early 2022, rather than start in the fall. The network (and, likely, producers) didn’t want to split up the last episodes, so this means the show’s final run will be over mostly consecutive weeks.
• As expected, the network confirmed it won’t launch a new talk show in the 1:37 a.m. time slot once A Little Late With Lilly Singh ends later this year. The network says it has other plans for the slot, but didn’t get specific.
