Not really. That was just another example of the type of racist HUMOR (which dehumanized blacks) that existed in the Jim Crow South. Many of these once-popular artifacts, depicting such ideas, remain, of course. Don't confuse them with reality.

This video is powerful and it has nothing to do with the footage of the alligator. IMO the artifacts depict exactly what happened. Taking away a slave woman's child was a way whites reasserted their authority over those slaves who were defiant.
The theft of a child was a tactic that was twofold both as a measure of control and it helped whites collect the materials (skins) needed for sale and food.
Although I do agree with much of what was contained in the link Blunt posted, the fact is we can't ignore the fact that crimes of this nature did happen. Remember we were considered as nothing more than livestock. So there were no laws to prevent slave owners from doing whatever they wanted.
There's been no end to racism in this country just double click the video and see the comments posted on the YouTube page. Caricatures and racist memorabilia have existed and will continue to float around as long as we live. But we cannot ignore or brush off what's considered humor by some. In many instances that humor hides many ugly truths.

Ever see the Marlon Riggs documentary "Ethnic Notions"? I recommend it highly...check your local library...
This may or may not be true but things of EQUAL brutality are. Thats why black people believe things like this because we wouldnt put it past them.
For example, in recent history there was a group of white men who took a black guy chained him to a truck and drugged his ass till his head damn near fell off. Because he was Black and this was in the 1990's. Back in slavery they really thought we was subhuman so they felt they could do what ever they wicked mind could think of.
probably had a lot more still born babies back then, or children who didn't survive their infancy. Remember medicine was still primitive then.

Well let's see. I guess it depends on how much profit they can make now off an 800 lb. alligator today vs. a baby that may one day become profitable in the future. Time value of money
