A paragraph from The Stand in the style of William Shakespeare.
[Enter RANDALL FLAGG, the Dark Man, with his followers]
FLAGG. My loyal subjects, hear me and rejoice!
For I have brought you to this promised land
Where we shall build a kingdom of our own
And rule with might and magic o'er the earth.
But first, we must destroy our enemies
Who dare to stand against us in the west
The feeble remnant of the olden world
That cling to life and hope and false beliefs.
They think they have a champion in their midst
A man who hears the voice of their false god
And leads them with his counsel and his wit.
But he is naught but dust and empty air
A puppet that I'll break with one swift blow
And then I'll take his woman for my own
And make her rue the day she spurned my love.
[He laughs wickedly]
The Godfather
[Enter DON VITO CORLEONE, the Godfather, with his consigliere TOM HAGEN and his son MICHAEL CORLEONE]
DON VITO. What news, good Tom, of our enterprise?
Hast thou secured the friendship of the Turk?
Or must we still contend with his designs?
TOM. My lord, I have conversed with Sollozzo
And he hath made to us a fair proposal
He asks for your protection and your aid
In his affairs of drugs and merchandise
He offers you a share of his revenues
And promises to leave you in your peace
If you consent to grant him your support.
DON VITO. And what say you, Tom, to this request?
Methinks it is a dangerous and foul
To deal in such commodities as these
That ruin and corrupt the souls of men
And breed among us strife and violence
I have no mind to soil my hands with drugs
Nor to provoke the ire of the law
Nor to offend our friends and allies here
Who are opposed to Sollozzo's trade
I will not join with him, nor with his kind.
TOM. I understand your reasons, my good lord
But think upon the benefits and risks
Sollozzo is a man of power and skill
He has the backing of the Tattaglia clan
And of the Barzini family as well
He will not take your answer lightly, sir
He may resort to force or treachery
To make you bend your will to his demands
Or else to strike you down with stealth and speed
You must be careful, sir, and well prepared.
MICHAEL. Father, may I speak? I have a thought
Why not invite this Sollozzo to a parley
And hear him out with courtesy and grace
And then, when he is lulled into a trust
And thinks he has you at his beck and call
We kill him with a single shot and then
We send a message to his friends and foes
That we are not to be trifled with or scorned
That we are strong and resolute and brave
That we are the Corleones, and we rule.
[They all look at him with surprise and admiration]
The Long Walk
[Enter RAY GARRATY, a walker in the Long Walk, a brutal contest where 100 boys must walk until only one remains alive]
GARRATY. How long, how long, must I endure this pain?
This endless march of death and misery
That wears away my flesh and bones and soul
And makes me wish for nothing but to die
I see my comrades fall, one by one
Some by the bullets of the soldiers grim
Some by their own despair or madness driven
Some by the sickness of their weary limbs
And yet I walk, I walk, I know not why
Perhaps for some faint hope of victory
Perhaps for some faint spark of love or pride
Perhaps for some faint memory of life
But all I feel is numbness and fatigue
And all I hear is silence and the gun
And all I see is darkness and the road
That leads me to my grave, or to the sun.
The Hunger Games
[Enter KATNISS EVERDEEN, a tribute from District 12, in the arena of the Hunger Games, a deadly competition where 24 children fight to the death]
KATNISS. What cruel and bloody spectacle is this
That I, a simple maid of humble birth
Must fight for life and honor in this place
Where death and danger lurk in every turn
I have no choice, no chance, no hope, no friends
But only enemies and foes and traps
That seek to end my brief and wretched life
And make me but a pawn in their vile game
But I will not give up, nor yield, nor cry
I have a cause, a purpose, and a will
To live, to love, to see my home again
And to defy the tyrant and his laws
I have a bow, a quiver, and a knife
And with these weapons I will make my stand
And with these weapons I will fight and kill
And with these weapons I will win or die.
