HBO cancels sports personality Bill Simmons' new talk show

That was a short run.

Bill Simmons' weekly HBO talk show "Any Given Wednesday" has been cancelled after only fourth months on the air. The final episode will air next week, HBO announced Friday.

Despite Simmons' charisma and some viral appearances from celebrity guests, the show failed to attract the ratings to keep it on the air.

"We loved making that show, but unfortunately it never resonated with audiences like we hoped. And that's on me. But I love being a part of HBO's family and look forward to innovating with them on other ambitious programming ideas over these next several years — both for the network and for digital," Simmons said in a statement.

It's not all over between HBO and the sports commentator. The cable network is reportedly still going to work on future projects with Simmons' media group, according to Variety.

This isn't Simmons first time dealing with a shutdown. He was the editor-in-chief of ESPN-owned Grantland, a blog covering sports and pop culture. ESPN did not renew his contract and closed the site in October 2015. In June, he launched The Ringer, an independent publication with a similar focus.

Peace ,

Simmons doesn't have the charisma to pull his own show

His quirkiness conveys much better on the page than it does on television, but the time slot killed him.

Who's checking for HBO programming on Wednesday? If it ain't on HBO on Sunday, I'm probably not going to watch it.

I wanted him to succeed but it wasn't just the time slot. I found his show a little on the boring side and the way it was produced and edited hurt also.

when is these cacs gonna realize bein white ain't enuf

fuckin show sucked cus dude shoulda never been on tv

Bill was an immensely entertaining writer and trailblazer in his genre... and his work at Grantland is nothing short of awesome.. But carrying a tv show alone just aint his thing.

I pretty much said the same thing as his writing was excellent but him being on camera was sorry as fuck.

replace HIM with Jemelle Hill....or Kellerman.

HBO needs a younger demo to come after those that don't fuck with Real Sports ( I love the show, but im older).

also I believe he's doing documentaries also for hbo, so I don't think their relationship is over

he mesh well when he's with jalen rose on camera. jalen has the charisma that simmons lack. i liked the episodes i saw. it's on the wrong night. and something is missing from it. maybe a co host.

Super Homer. He never takes the high road on anything. Especially when speaking on the Nets
Fuck him he always got some slick shit to say about anything non Celtics/Patriots/New England related.

I remember right before the Big Three in Boston when the Celtics with the worst record got the 5th pick in the KD draft he wrote a column about ditching his Celtics fandom for the Clippers.

A couple of fucking months later when they get KG and Ray he's back to Mr. Celtic. Fuck him.

Never knew why this guy had a show to begin with. I never found his insight interesting or even witty. He just struck me as an arrogant, smarmy ass that thought he was the smartest person in the room. BUT...he was smart enough to get these fools to sign him, give him a show (and future projects), and a shit load of cash. SO WHAT DO I KNOW? LOL

To be fair, the show is called Any Given Wednesday so it isn't like they gave him a random night and he can blame the flop on that.

Plus Bill Maher airs on Friday night, the absolute worst night for TV, and draws about 4x the audience-- I watch it most weeks but never on Friday.

And Simmons preemptively rejected that theory:

Not saying you're wrong because he said so but I think the Maher example proves viability on week nights. And I think Wednesday is thought of as a better night to air than Friday.

I wonder if he loses money on this since HBO is keeping him on.

Says a lot if they would just rather air "I Am Legend" in his timeslot (his 10/19 lead in that had nearly double the audience).

You mean his work as a writer on Grantland or in creating and managing the project? Because I noticed you used the past tense in calling him "an immensely entertaining writer and trailblazer."

I missed out on Grantland. I was just too busy for all their long-winded stuff. But I wish it was still around.

Well before that. His days as "The Sports Guy" during the internets infancy.. And his early work for ESPN page 2 where he really became famous.

I was trying to ask in which respect you regarded his work at Grantland as "nothing short of awesome"-- his writing or otherwise.

I like him but it just didn't work...

and honestly I never watched it and I have HBO.

However some of the interviews were VERY VERY good and reminiscent of his best podcasts (which is his REAL strength)

He should have tried to stick with the podcast format more and just done straight interviews.
