BGOL Writers... everyone else is cashing in on fairy tales and childrens stories why not US?

Re: Writers everyone else is cashing in on fairy tales and childrens stories why not

:yes:How do I find out whether the book is in the public domain?

The rules vary from country to country. In the US and many other countries, authors can put a work in the public domain by formally declaring that they are doing so. But most books enter the public domain either because they are not copyrightable (e.g. certain government documents), or because their copyrights expire.

Below, I give my best understanding of when copyright expires in various countries, but keep in mind that I am not a lawyer, and should not be relied on for legal advice.

In the United States, the following rules apply:

Anything copyrighted prior to 1923 is in the public domain. (Practically speaking, this includes anything published prior to 1923, since publication without copyright put the work straight into the public domain. But note this possible exception in some western states for some 1909-1922 foreign works that were not published in the US before 1923.) Due to a 20-year copyright extension enacted in the US in 1998, copyrights from 1923 or later that are still in force will stay in effect through 2018 or longer.

Certain works copyrighted in 1923 or later may already have entered the public domain. In particular, works published in the US before 1989 without proper copyright notice, and works published in the US before 1964 whose copyrights were not renewed, may have entered the public domain. However, works from 1923 or later that were originally published in countries outside the US may still be copyrighted regardless of whether they were printed with proper notice or renewed. To research whether a book's copyright has been renewed, or needed to be renewed, see this article.

Works never published prior to 2003 (and never registered for copyright prior to 1978) are now in the public domain in the US if they are by authors who died more than 70 years before the most recent New Year's day. (For 2013, this means authors who died before 1943.) Although this new rule does not put any previously published material into the public domain, it may allow some long-lost manuscripts and collections of letters to be published online as "new" online books.

thanx for bumping the thread but niggas don't have much imagination for that shit...

meanwhile theres yet another version/take on Alice in Wonderland coming on tv:

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is an upcoming American fantasy-drama series that was created by writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz for ABC Studios. The program is a spin-off of Once Upon a Time and will air on ABC at 8:00 on Thursday nights in the 2013–14 television season beginning October 10, 2013.[1]

The series is based around the Lewis Carroll fairytale classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but with a different twist from the other adaptations and takes place in the same universe as Once Upon a Time in present-day Wonderland, with flashbacks to pre-Curse Wonderland.[2] As such, it is expected to follow the same setting as the parent series, including the use of Disney and Lost related allusions. In addition, the series will have crossover episodes with Once Upon a Time that will also involve a connection with the characters that are trapped in Storybrooke, Maine.[3]

I'm doing some based on African American folklore characters. Folk heroes like Stagger Lee aka Stacka Lee and Jody The Grinder aka Joe De Grinder, Aunt Jemima, Big Liz, John Henry Irons, even Caribbean folklore Obah woman. I'm working on a origin story of Jody Grinder.

If anyone knows of any other African Ameican folk stories from your hometown, region or culture please share.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA
Critics Consensus
The admirably old-fashioned In the Heart of the Sea boasts thoughtful storytelling to match its visual panache, even if it can't claim the depth or epic sweep to which it so clearly aspires.

The huge, whale-sized problem is that Howard can't decide if this is dark, adult fare or a rollicking tale of derring-do.

What remains is an opportunity for an intense, Jaws-like thalassophobic nightmare, squandered.

If you want a Ron Howard movie about a man obsessed with a creature from the deep, "In the Heart of the Sea," sadly, is not the place to start. Try "Splash."

It ends up just feeling really bland and boring and slow.

Same applies with writing. All you have to do is change the names and the settings.

Get a book on astrology and up to 12 characters are already written for you

don't ask how to get the motivation to actually put all this into a book though. I'm still working on that myself
