Illinois Conservative Group Denies Sitting On People’s Ballot Applications
But state Democrats suspect a voter suppression effort.

The Democratic clerk of Rock Island County in Illinois says a conservative group allowed more than a thousand completed vote-by-mail applications to sit in a post office box for three weeks before someone raised questions about it.
“We think they had no intention of ever delivering it to us,” Karen Kinney said in an interview.
Kinney said she learned of the problem last month after hearing from voters who hadn’t received their ballots. She said the 1,500 applications would have continued to languish if she hadn’t contacted law enforcement.

Today's smears come to us courtesy of Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the FBI. Please do note the common thread running through each of these stories.
In the video above, (note: video at sourcelink, I didn't embed it) we have Lou Dobbs breathlessly reporting that FBI sources say there's evidence that Clinton's private server was hacked.
Then we have Bret Baier breathlessly reporting that FBI sources say an indictment on Clinton Foundation wrongdoing is near.
Finally, the Wall Street Journal has another "let's dish on Clinton Foundation investigations" article out tonight, based solely on FBI sources. You can read it if you want to (it's unlocked).
Do you see the common link? We have an FBI that's fully and totally out of control, with a whole bunch of agents leaking bullsh*t stories 5 days ahead of an election exclusively to Murdoch-owned media outlets.
The Wall Street Journal article at least tries to incorporate the competing narratives into one. I'll summarize for you.
- Some FBI guys in the New York office wanted a witch hunt
- The FBI guys were rabid because of Schweitzer's Clinton Cash book which Trump campaign CEO Stephen Bannon funded with right wing tax deductible dollars.
- DOJ and public corruption lawyers said nope, you've got nothing. Give it up, stand down.
- Some agents who are still on the public payroll refuse to accept that verdict.
- FBI is now leaking like a sieve to Murdoch news organizations (and Murdoch organizations alone) because they have nothing left but going rogue.
Taxpayers also paid for the FBI to chase leads going nowhere, and they paid DOJ lawyers to step on the investigation, and they're paying those same FBI agents to leak unsubstantiated stories to the media in an effort to overtly meddle in our election process.
As a taxpayer, that outrages me. It should outrage all of us. I agree with Josh Marshall's conclusion here:

Emails Show How Republicans Lobbied To Limit Voting Hours In North Carolina
In emails, state and county Republican officials lobbied members of at least 17 county election boards to keep early-voting sites open for shorter hours on weekends and in evenings.
ASHEBORO, N.C., Nov 3 (Reuters) - When Bill McAnulty, an elections board chairman in a mostly white North Carolina county, agreed in July to open a Sunday voting site where black church members could cast ballots after services, the reaction was swift: he was labeled a traitor by his fellow Republicans.
“I became a villain, quite frankly,” recalled McAnulty at a state board of elections meeting in September that had been called to resolve disputes over early voting plans. “I got accused of being a traitor and everything else by the Republican Party,” McAnulty said.
Following the blowback from Republicans, McAnulty later withdrew his support for the Sunday site.
In an interview with Reuters, he said he ultimately ruled against opening the Sunday voting site in Randolph County because he had “made a mistake in reading the wishes of the voters.” He declined to discuss the episode further.

A legion of Donald Trump’s most deplorable fans are readying a series of voter-intimidation and poll-watching tactics.
Politico reports that a motley crew of alt-right and militia groups, Ku Klux Klan members, and Neo-Nazis are all planning to come out in droves on November 8 to suppress the minority vote and “monitor” the democratic process. “The possibility of violence on or around Election Day is very real,” Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center toldPolitico. “Donald Trump has been telling his supporters for weeks and weeks and weeks now that they are about to have the election stolen from them by evil forces on behalf of the elites.” Politico reports that the list of organizations plotting Election Day efforts includes—but is not limited to—the American Freedom Party, a white-nationalist group; various factions of the K.K.K.; the National Socialist Movement; and the vigilante militia group, the Oath Keepers.
“We are organizing poll watchers in urban areas to cut down on the most traditional type of voter fraud. We also will have stationary cameras hidden at polling locations in Philadelphia, to monitor anyone that comes in to vote and make sure that the same people are not voting at multiple locations. If we see people voting in multiple locations the footage will be submitted to the FEC as well as put out on social media to undermine the legitimacy of Clinton should she steal the election,” an anonymous representative of alt-right Web site, TheRightStuff.biz, told Politico in an e-mail, adding that some people will also be “going in to the ghettos in Philly with 40s and weed to give out to the local residents” in order to depress minority voter turnout.

America Is Already in the Midst of a Voter Suppression Crisis
We didn’t even need to wait for Election Day.
In North Carolina, Grace Bell Hardison, a 100-year-old black woman, felt the sting of voter suppression. Hardison’s voter registration was challenged in a scheme designed to disenfranchise Democrats in Beaufort County. The county was once required to submit all voting changes to the federal government due to its history of discrimination against minority voting, but the Supreme Court revoked this requirement in 2013. Since then, four individuals, led by Republican Shane Hubers, have attempted to purge 139 voters (most of them black Democrats) from the rolls in Beaufort County by challenging their registration. Voters whose registration is challenged are informed via mail and must appear at a county board of elections or return a notarized form. Otherwise their voting rights are nullified.
Following media attention to her plight, Hardison successfully restored her voting rights. Other North Carolinians were not so lucky. Any registered voter in the state can challenge another voter’s registration; in Moore County, the single person who challenged nearly 400 registered voters just happened to be the secretary of the county Republican Party. Nearly all of them were purged from the voter rolls. Other counties are engaging in the same chicanery; in Cumberland County alone, officials have purged 3,500 people from the voter rolls. They will face no resistance from a legislature and governor who, in the words of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, recently passed voting restrictions that “target African Americans with almost surgical precision.” The 4th Circuit blocked many of the worst restrictions from taking effect this election season—but Republican-controlled county election boards have quietly continued to implement them by limiting the number of polling places and slashing early voting.
In Wisconsin, Zack Moore, a 34-year-old black man, faced voter suppression head on. (The linked piece, like the above piece about Grace Bell Hardison, is by Ari Berman of the Nation, who’s been doing remarkable work reporting on voter suppression.) As required under Wisconsin’s stringent new voter ID law, Moore went to the Division of Motor Vehicles to obtain a photo ID to vote, presenting a photo ID from his previous state of residency, a Social Security card, and a pay stub addressed to his home in Wisconsin. It wasn’t enough: The DMV demanded his birth certificate. When he told them it was lost, DMV officials told him to drive to Illinois and obtain a new one. As an alternative, Moore entered the ID Petition Process—which would not provide him an ID before Election Day. Eventually, a federal judge had to intervene to ensure that Moore could acquire the necessary ID. At least 2,200 other Wisconsinites are still waiting on the IDPP to provide them an ID. Countless other Wisconsin voters have already been denied the requisite ID because they lack a birth certificate.
