..do you feel you owe that person for putting you on, if they're kind of fucked up - and ... how much do you owe? You owe them for life, each time they NEED it, within reason? Or a favor for a favor, and nothing after that?

You don't owe them a damn thing. I've helped many in my career and never expected anything in return. I get my blessing back from helping people.
 
A nice token ie a favorite liquor or some money or gift card toward a nice steak or nicer seafood spot. After that a written note of sincere Thanks and u put someone else on and keep that helping train hauling along.
