BGOL Legal-Pete Rock Plans To File A Lawsuit Against Nas For Unpaid Royalties From His Work On ‘Illmatic’

Nas now has master rights for Illmatic and its publishing
so Pete is knocking at the right door

a few years ago Pete would have to go at Serch Columbia and Nas

it is baffling why Pete waited almost 30 years
Unless Sony just gave them to him this week, Nas still does not own his Illmatic masters. Is he working on it? Yes. But as of today, Sony/ Columbia owns the masters and i assure you they have no plans on giving him his best selling album. Artists can't just buy their masters because they feel like it. The owner of the masters must be willing to sell. What incentive does Sony/ Columbia have to sell? None. It's not about if it's the right thing to do or not. It's a business.

According to Nas two years ago.......

NAS ADMITS PRINCE DECLINED TO RECORD WITH HIM BECAUSE HE DIDN'T OWN HIS MASTERS

Didn't Nas have an issue with Serch doing some shady shit to him?
Wasn't shady. Nas felt there were too many hands in the pot and that Serch was not needed in the equation. Of course, Serch felt otherwise.
Does Nas own his maters to Illmatic?
No he does not. People want to believe this, but getting masters is not easy. Hell, Jay Z had to kinda screw Kanye to get his masters.

this the shit i dont understand ...

ok so he signed away his rights for 5k ...the shits a hit ...

still look out for the man on the back end cuz it`s the right thing to do ...

he probably wanted some crazy-ass figure only thing i can come up with ...

How many times is the right thing to do a part of a business transaction. ?

Did he sell it for 5k ? Then that is what he got...

Now was he a drug addict or in some kind of bind? Could because who does business in a waffle house and signs a contract with no lawyer to review it ?

The contract said no further payments will bemade.

At least in Pete Rocks case his contract spoke to points....

Why do people think that giving someone extra money is the right thing to do? If you would have lost money would that person have given your money back? No. In fact, they would have gladly taken your money again.

you are right - I was mistaken about Illmatic master rights

btw - poor example with Prince & Nas...
JayZ Reasonable Doubt

I brought up Jay Z to illustrate how difficult it is to get your masters. Jay Z got his masters by selling/ trading Kanye's masters to Def Jam. That's some cold ish right there.

This was internet rumor

Def Jam already owned a part of Kanye's masters, Jay would be selling his interest, which I doubt he did.

Unfortunately, it is not a rumor. The only reason I only this case to be true is because I have a close relative that worked as an executive at Def Jam at that time. There is more to the story. It wasn't just Kanye's catalog, it was most of the Roc catalog that was sold to Def Jam. To be honest, I can understand the move. He owned the Roc masters anyway, so someone was always going to be in possession of those assets. He made a decision regarding which assets were more valuable to him. He chose his personal recordings. I'm not mad at that decision. Kanye doesn't make a big deal about it because the value of his masters at this time is insignificant compared to his total worth.

No cap, Ten knows my real name and knows that what I say on this board is always 100 and verifiable.

Here is a fun fact, my brother is heard/ seen nationwide daily and I currently hold a position in my state where I am the only black male in my state with this title.

Pete Rock and Nas are at loggerheads. The producer has revealed his plans to file a lawsuit against the rapper for unpaid royalties from his work on his classic album Illmatic. According to Complex, Rock claims that he hasn’t been paid for contributing to the album since its 1994 release, despite having production and writing credits on “The World Is Yours,” one of the biggest songs from the album. “Nas and his people have stonewalled me since 1994,” Rock said about the matter. “My New Year’s resolution is to be compensated for my hard work on Illmatic.”
Rock’s legal team says he signed a contract that gave him a right to a portion of the royalties from “The World Is Yours,” and they now predict that the amount owed is in the millions of dollars. They also say Nas failed to uphold his end of the deal, despite numerous requests from Rock to be compensated. The lawsuit will be filed later this month, according to Complex.

In addition to being one of the more popular cuts from Illmatic, “The World Is Yours” has also been sampled in nearly 100 songs, including records by Eminem, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, Rick Ross, and more. Nas and Rock were last paired together on “The Art Of It” and “Queensbridge Politics,” which appeared on Nas’ 2019 compilation album The Lost Tapes 2.

Nas addressed it
