Just added the Sony MDR-XB1000 to my collection.
Time to see if these 70mm drivers can pump the bass.

Sennheiser hd 280 pro and Audio Technica ath- m-50. Somebody school me if they know about some better closed back over the ear headphones that don't need external amps.
What price range?
Don't really care about price, just want closed back and easily driven (usually ipod). When I was researching before, I found that the better phones are open back and/or need an amp.
The open back are not always better, its all listener preference.
When it comes to closed headphones I really like the Denon line, they are easy to drive and have great bass response.
You can pick up a set of Denon AH-D2000's for around $250, I had a set and they sounded great, I have since moved up to the top of the line AH-D7000 which sound even better but cost a lot more money and they have polished wood cups which would not be good for portable use.
They also make the mid-grade AH-D5000.
The Ultrasone line is suppose to be excellent too but I don't have any hands on experience with them.
Thanks, I will try the Denons
Pioneer HDJ-200. DJ headphones, built tough, sound great.

*Update* I now have the Sennheiser HD 201's the HD 202s the HD 151's as well as recently the HD 448's and the HD 202's are by far the best out of all of them I would suggest getting headphone amps and pair them with the HD202's the bass is out of this world!!! i'm using the Fiio E5 hadphone amp shit is better than BEats by Dre
Was ready to spend at least $50 for a good set. I saw these at Walmart for like $20 and was shocks at how good they perform. Good mids and highs and the bass is crisp and clear. Dont sleep.
