The ridiculous reason McDonald's sold Chipotle and missed out on billions of dollars

REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson) The signage outside a historic McDonald's restaurant is seen in Downey, California, February 18, 2015.

McDonald's was a major contributor to Chipotle's success.

The burger chain made an investment in Chipotle in 1998 that helped it grow from 14 locations to nearly 500 within seven years. By 2005, McDonald's had a 90% stake in Chipotle's business.

But one year later, McDonald's divested its stake and parted ways with the fledgling burrito chain.

Now Chipotle has more 1,800 locations and business is booming, while McDonald's is battling declining sales and traffic, a damaged public perception, and a relationship with franchisees that has hit an all-time low.

At McDonald's annual shareholders meeting this week, an attendee grilled the CEO on why the company gave up on Chipotle, according to Entrepreneur.

The chief executive, Steve Easterbrook, said Chipotle was a distraction. (It's worth noting that he was not CEO when McDonald's bailed on Chipotle.)

"At the time Chipotle and other concepts, such as Boston Market, had taken attention away from the core brand," Entrepreneur's Kate Taylor writes, paraphrasing Easterbrook's response. "Company executives wanted everyone to put 100 percent of their efforts into the McDonald's brand, so they sold the company's shares."

Clearly, that wasn't the best strategy.

Chipotle's same-store sales grew more than 16% in 2014, while McDonald's declined 1% during the same period.

Chipotle founder and coCEO Steve Ells has spoken openly about the companies' differences in the past.

"What we found at the end of the day was that culturally we're very different," Ells told Bloomberg of his company's relationship with McDonald's. "There are two big things that we do differently. One is the way we approach food, and the other is the way we approach our people culture. It's the combination of those things that I think make us successful."

For example, McDonald's wanted Chipotle to add drive-thrus to its restaurants and change its name to Chipotle Fresh Mexican Grill, according to the report.

The company also forced Chipotle to franchise some of its restaurants, which it did reluctantly.

"Bless their hearts, McDonald's had a lot of great suggestions, and we were always polite about it," Chipotle's chief operations officer, Gretchen Selfridge, told Bloomberg. "They really wanted us to do drive-thrus. They really wanted us to do breakfast. But we just really didn't do any of that."

Smartest think bitch ass McDonald's ever done

Now let me go get some chipotle right now, burrito bowl on deck

It doesn't sound ridiculous, they wanted to put all of their effort on their main business. GE just did the same shit and is selling off their financial departments to focus on manufacturing

Companies spin off little departments all the time. McDonald's is a burger staple, not a burrito conglomerate.

We should talk about how Chipotle is turning over to the bad guy.

McDonalds selling isn't note worthy. The CEO of Chipotle saying they never should have partnered with McDonalds is that dumb shit.

Mcds helped turned 14 in to 1,800 locations now they whining.

Correction.... McDonald's 'core business'....... is REAL ESTATE.
Not selling burgers. :smh:

Location. Location. Location.

Typically, they own the land, and then rent it to the franchisees for a variable charge that takes sales into account: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonald's#Business_model

A former McDonald's (CFO) Chief Financial Officer named Harry J. Sonneborn is often quoted as having said - "We are not basically in the food business. We are in the real estate business."

"We are in the real estate business. The only reason we sell hamburgers is because they are the greatest producer of revenue from which our tenants can pay us rent." :smh:

Seems the suggestions that these Mcdonald's 'Real Estate Developers' were making to Chipotle typically involve trying to increase the 'volume' of customers somehow. (via foot traffic, or drive-thrus, or during certain times of the day )

- Add a drive-thru (to get more customers in vehicles)
- Serve breakfast (to get more customers early in the morning)
- Change the name to "Fresh Mexican Grill" (to get more customers in the fastest rising segment of the US population)

The quality of the food, the menu items & the treatment of their employees/customers takes a 'back seat' to the 'numbers game'. :smh:

With McDonalds it's.... Customer Traffic First.... Quality Second. (if at all)

But Chipotle is the opposite, instead of offering 50+ billion different things on the menu... Chipotle just makes like 3 or 4 simple menu items... and serve it 3-4 different ways... with 'your choice' of toppings.

That's why McDonalds is gonna stay losing 'market share' to the Chipotle's (or anyone like them).

I go to Chipotle almost weekly for a burrito bowl

I go to McDonald's maybe once every four months.

They could own both. The problem is what business decisions they would make owning both. I doubt they would be the same.

Chipotle is known for their customer service in the industry, McDonald's :hmm:

of the free wi fi, and I see homeless folks chilling there

all day...

the only reason why its not looking bad now, is because its

such a big company..

but they are going to have to reinvent themselves like yesterday or they will

be the block buster video of the food industry....

perfect marketing strategy

fast affordable a decent amount of food 'healthy' 'natural' and they sell beer too.

Go to any of the numerous Chipotles around here near a school campus and you see the exact same thing. Lines out of the door, so much so I stopped going during the day.

If I want a fast food burger, the only place I am thinking about going is Five Guys. They fucked up letting the McNugget slip. The only thing I get from there now are shakes, smoothies, and McFlurries.

Their third world sales are still pretty strong.

^^^^

I'm saying...at lunch time it is PACKED!!!

and they making MONEY.

BUT they NEED to fix that stuff about being stingy with the food though and charging extra for a little more rice and stuff...

that was a BIG story and could really bite them in the ass.

Mickey D's getting squeezed by premium fast food (5 Guys, Chipotle, Panera Bread etc) on one hand and healthy fast food (Subway) on the other and better tasting direct fast food competitors (Wendy's) on the other side. Basically, people know that burgers, soda and fries is some unhealthy shit so if they are going to get some they want it to be quality...otherwise, they go for the healthy alternative.
Mickey Ds survives on convenience only at this point. They are typically the most efficient fast food restaurant and quality remains the same no matter the store. So on a late night run or if stuck in a unfamiliar place, you know what you are getting with them. That strategy is trouble in this current market.
