BGOL Almost Famous: Jaguar Wright

On another note, the whole neo-soul scene fucked it up for themselves low key. The fought so hard against the term "neo-soul" and it always baffled me. They even shot at documentary "There's No Such Thing As Neosoul" back in the early 2000s. The whole idea was there's nothing NEW about soul. Yeah, I get it. But it was a way for the industry to market yall during a time that Ashanti, Usher and Alicia Keys were considered R&B. Badu put the album out with "Neosoul is Dead" on the cover. Jag did the "Divorcing Neo to Marry Soul" shit and none of it worked. They essentially killed the way the industry marketed them they suffered as a result. Shit, we all suffered as a result since we lost that great sound.
^

and of course NOW?

they ALL trying to bring it back

I'm hoping it works because we need the sound. Plus the live events were LIT. The Black Lily was the best shit ever. I was dumb young and sneaking into The 5 Spot back then, but at any given night you could see Quest playing with the band, Floetry singing, India floating thru the crowd. The unsung hero of those times was Lady Alma though. Fam, she used to blow EVERYONE away.

thaaaank you brother! i swear i used to have arguments with people about this shit, what were they ashamed about ? they did it in my opinion to appease white labeling, i always thought the roots had that shit on lock and they couldve gone on to give a middle finger to what white established industry and white people wanted to classify or label us as and just do us , build this alternate to radio r&b and stay with it ,without tryin to hard to distance themselves from "labelling" which is pretty much what they tried to do with okayplayer and shift into a new paradim! they had it and got spooked from bs! now they try to so hard to reclaim that!power advantage i felt eryka & jaguar's record title were ass backwards and regressive in the lon run. what happens when folks think they too smart for their own good

MAAAN! I REMEMBER THIS ! LOVED HER, ONE OF MY BIG HOMIES PLAYED ON THE RECORD, HASAN KEYBOARDIST
This was on the High Crimes sdtrk Movie with Morgan Freeman. I don't even think they played it during the movie. I heard it and it stopped me in my tracks. Great song never heard anything else from her.

jazzyfatnastees and les nubians are their names.

Jaguar did her thing in the industry for a hot minute. I thought she was on for real when she did that Come commercial and was featured heavily that year. Loved her music.

This shit is crazy. I don't know what's true and what's not, but I will say, Jag has always been a real ass chick. She was all neosoul and shit, but she always been a G. She from the worst projects in Philly and was in all the hood spots back in the day. She was always about that life.

The problem with that whole genre isn't the style of music they were doing. it's that none of them were PLAYING the music. It was always a bunch of white musicians and/or producers pushing all the buttons for them. What ever happened to go old fashioned soul where WE play the instruments?

I wonder if anyone other than regular folks listening. Hope she don't get in a 'car accident' I love her work and think she courageous AF. I don't know if it will ultimately do any good but we'll see. Something will come of all this. She mentioning too many ppl

I believe most of what she’s saying because it’s obvious and I had my suspicions about Diddy before.
