I have memories going back from 1989-1997. It really had more to do with the staleness of hip-hop today and lack of variety. Gold tooth heavy chain suped up hooptie ghetto booty large tees making it rain gets old after a while. Black radio also became a payola pyramid scheme as well. Viacom and Clear Channel are both to blame.

The old school formula that worked was

1. Fun hip-hop
2. Lyrical hip-hop
3. Conscious/Political/Cultural hip-hop
4. Female MC's(died when Lil Kim changed the game)
5. Gangsta rap that was street but not necessarily glorifying it.
6. Alternative hip-hop
7. Videos that had real hip-hop dancing and not booty coon neckbone lean shit.

When they said go with the simple shit only and fuck everything else because it don't sell BS is when everything got fucked up.

I remember Rap City from the 90's.

They introduced me to west coast hip-hop and the whole culture of the west coast vibe with me being from NYC.

Them videos directed by F.Gary Grey and Hype Williams are classic.

My dad and other members in his department have been protesting that show, writing and harrassing BET trying to get the show off the air for the last 5 years...I was talking to my family about that...my dad says that crime may go up as that some of those folks may not have anything to do..

I remember those videos too. That's back when they use to show guns, before they had to start blurring them out. Mc Eiht's "Straight Up Menace", Comptons Most Wanted "Hood Done Took Me Under", Spice 1's "Triggas Gots No Heart", Boss "Deeper" and "Recipe of a Hoe", "South Central Cartel's "Gang Story", etc. all that was my shit

i've got so many videos of rap city on vhs i wanted to convert them to dvd then use some of the clips for future use because i got rap videos i know from leaders of the new school, jungle bros, dela soul, masterace, audio2, Chicago rappers like Mc supreme, AND all of MC HAMMER first video to last and so so much more... One day it will come in handy i don't know for what yet but it will. It's a lot of black history.
