Best laptop under $500?

Looking to lock down a holiday gift next week, feedback appreciated!

if you can I would try to hang in there till after new years....

you can wait after new years or if you can hold off a few weeks and catch that president day sale...

I just be surfin the web, printing shit out and watchin movies and listing to music..

so I just got a gamer laptop... got the asus rog...

couldnt be happier.... videos play crisp like a muthafucka..

This is for one of my favorite relatives, you should see what I have in mind for others! Wondering how a $20 gift certificate to Red Lobster is perceived as opposed to Burger King-- the latter is less prestigious a brand but more trips could be covered.
Wow.

Yeah, I hear you but I'm not so cheap as to give an IOU for Jesus's birthday so it is what it is as far as missing deals.

oh.. I thought it was for you..... but damn a laptop, sheet.... I just give the nieces and nephews a lil amazon gift card...

a laptop, sheeeet they better be workin on a full scholarship or someshit...

wastin my money and lil knigga searchin for big booty bitches fightin over food and shit

It's for a cousin going to college, so basic computing, web searching, video.

Acer Aspire 5 is prob one of the better all-around, non-gaming laptops for the money. The Aspire 5's with AMD processors are a good bit cheaper than the Intel ones but tend to get slightly worse battery life.

If it needs to be more portable (14" screen or smaller), this Lenovo looks solid

Amazon has an Acer for 399.
Also hit up Slickdeals and go to the Hot Deals forum.
You will find what you need.

if you're willing to pay a little over $500

under $500

a laptop under 5 hun is only good

for surfing and typing up documents

and other low resource using tasks.

The empty space in my left chest region agrees with you but my head says rewarding one of the young ones for making it to college will provide some incentive to the younger ones.

This mindset will have you buying $500 laptops for $750 and feeling smug about it.

No... this mindset will hopefully get

one to think about what you'll need

this piece of equipment for and how

it will work out for you.

I do work that requires a good sound card

and great video card and I need a processor

and enough ram to power me thru work and

demanding applications.

...so again, it will depend on what you need

it for but hey... do what you gotta do son.

Here is my 2 cents based on my experience when searching for sub $500 laptops. Remember everyones experience is different, so hopefully we will hear from others:

- Stay away from core i3 processors, go for i5 processors. Unless you have a family member you despise and red lobster is too good for them. This will make sure everything they do is extremely slow. My daily laptop is a 2015 MacBook Pro with i5 5000 series chip and 8GB Ram. I use it to play games, surf, run virtualBox and watch movies without issues. I tried an i3 before and never again will I buy something with that processor. When I need to program, I jump on the Dell XPS i7-7000(quad core) series with 16GB Ram.

- The i5 8000 and up series chips are quad core + battery efficient. The i5 7000 and below are dual core.

- If you are gifting someone a laptop and they currently do not own a laptop/desktop, there is a good chance they are not jumping in deep enough where they will require a powerful system for Video Editing, Sound Processing, Android Programming, or gaming. When they get to they point, hopefully they will have done enough work for money to purchase something more powerful.

- I haven't worked with Ryzen Chips but it looks like 5, 7, and 9 are the best choices. Stay away from the 3's, AMD and Intel.

If it’s basic computing. Get a Ipad and one of them upscale keyboard cases with the kickstand. It should be right under 500 and you can do a lot of shit. I use it more than my Mac.

Computer A

1366 x 768 resolution
512 GB memory
Hard Disk Size 512 GB
Processor (CPU) Speed 3.6 GHz
Display Size 15 in

Computer B

1920x1080 resolution
256 GB memory
Hard Disk Size 256 GB
Processor (CPU) Speed 8 GHz
Display Size 15.6 in

Is computer B worth $130 more than computer A for the better processing speed, resolution and slightly bigger screen? Or is computer A better with twice the memory and and twice the hard disk size?

So basically-- Is Computer B better? (I'm not even sure if it is clearly better with those differences.) If it is, is it $130 worth of better? ($485 vs $620.)
