Bernard Hopkins said on Twitter tonight that his rumored light heavyweight world championship fight with Chad Dawson is set for October 15 on HBO.

Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) became the oldest boxing champion in history at age 46 on May 21 by defeating Jean Pascal in Montreal. On the same card, Dawson (30-1, 17 KO) returned from a layoff with new trainer Emanuel Steward and outpointed Adrian Diaconu, making for the American road fighters going 2-0 on the card.

There is a chance that Hopkins vs Dawson could also wind up in Montreal, since neither are major draws in the States but the Montreal fans are passionate and turn out for big fights. Hopkins' win over Pascal was cheered respectfully as the right decision by those fans, and the fight just might be worth more in Canada than it is in the United States. Hopkins says that the fight's location is still to be decided.

Dawson going to be getting the best of the old man then the old man going to resort to one of his dirty tatics he is using more and more in his old man years and wind up winning the fight

Firstly, Dawson doesn't have the work rate to get the better of Hopkins, he fights subdued and doesn't have the killer instinct nor the experience to get to Hopkins. He has the physical tools to give Bernard a nightmare type of fight at his age but not the heart or the boxing IQ. While he's taking it easy not throwing enough punches it will give B-Hop more of what he needs at his age....time. Time to think, adjust and plan. Dawson imo was and is overrated because he lacks killer instinct and heart, 2 things you can't lack against a guy like Bernard. If you base your prediction just going on physical strengths, then yeah, Dawson should win easily. But he lacks all the intangibles and that's why he's going to lose.

That's the most likely scenario but it also depends on Hopkins mindset. In the past he's lost fights he should have won by overlooking opponents (Taylor namely). I don't think that will be the case with Dawson since he's always taken Dawson seriously (serious enough to have not been in a hurry to fight him before). I would have like Dawson to get another fight under him with Steward before this but it is what it is.

I also think Bernard has come to the realization that he is not just a great defensive boxer/counter puncher but he's also an offensive force when he applies that part of his game. To beat Hopkins, first and foremost you need (aside from skill of course) a very high work rate and accuracy. That's why Calzaghe gave him problems, he forced Bernard to fight at a higher pace than all his other opponents. I also think he took Taylor lightly, coupled with the fact that Bernard hadn't really cemented his legacy as a legend yet. So Taylor saw him as a very good fighter who was getting long in the tooth and it was his(Taylor's) time to shine. The respect wasn't there and Taylor fought like it.
Unless Hopkins gets very old overnight, I see the Dawson/Hopkins fight playing out like I stated earlier.

Good points.

Dawson is better now than ever before...his inability to let his hands go is over since Stewart got there....Stewart is master at fixing a fighters game.....& pushing the pace....

Dawson will outwork B-Hop....Pascal was able to put B-Hop in some bad spots & he is no where near Dawson's level....Dawson is a boxer that is going to be turned into a good KO artist in the future...

his gas tank is also unlimited unlike Pascal who always slows down in the later rds....Pascal in both fights won a good majority of rds in the beginning against Hopkins at times rocked him....Hopkins came on strong towards the middle when Pascal began to fade....

I really think Dawson takes this just on his work rate alone....

I disagree. I saw the same old Dawson his last fight, dude was hesitant, had an opponent in front of him who was far less talented, much smaller and easy to hit. Yet Diaconu still managed to land some pretty big shots on him and gave Dawson a much better fight than he should have - and only because Dawson allowed him to. And all this was with emmanuel pushing him in the corner.
I also disagree with your assessment of Steward. Emmanuel is great at fixing fighters who've let their mechanics fall apart and or re-teaching them to use their strengths to their advantage like he did for the Klitschkos and for Cotto. Cotto is not the fighter he was under Steward, he's much more subdued and has learned to box instead of brawl. Dawson needed to learn to brawl a little bit more, he needed the opposite. I don't think Steward was the right guy for Dawson at all. He's a great trainer, but after seeing his failure to convert 2 other athletes with loads of talent but no heart or killer instinct, Taylor and Cintron, into the fighters they should be - I'm highly dubious he can do it with Dawson. Killer instinct is something you develop in your formative years, it comes from anger, at whatever. Your upbringing, your surroundings, whatever. Dawson doesn't have it, never will. He's the same Dawson he always was, his last fight made that very clear, he does enough to win but he won't risk himself. Against Hopkins that won't be enough, he'll need to shift it into another gear that he doesn't have. I like Dawson a lot but he's one of the most frustrating fighters for me to watch, all that talent and no fire, emotion, or heart in the ring.

valid points....Stewart has been pushing him to get more aggressive....in the fight with Diaconu you saw brief exchanges from Stewart & Dawson were he was getting on him for being too passive....

Dawson came out a few RDS after those exchanges in the corner & responded well....especially during the late RDS....Cotto is washed up....this fight with Marg will be his last meaniful fight IMO....

Dawson will out work Hopkins....Stewart doesn't bullshit his fighters he really pushes them to fight......hell I've seen Wlad actually get mad at steward for yelling at him in the corner for not KOing a bum.....

now B-Hop is no bum...he is a school of Boxing knowledge...I just don't see the same fighter that fought Pascal or Diaconu coming to fight Hopkins...

Dawson wanted Hopkins for the last 2 yrs even when he was with Mustafa but the fight never happen....I feel that he is motivated....also bruh remember he has Pascal almost finished if it wasn't for that cut....when he (Chad) finally realized "Oh shit I'm about to lose my strap..." he turned it on & was clearly winning the fight 'til the cut happen....

IDK maybe I'm being bias I really like Dawson he is my fav prospect for a while now....he is his own worst enemy IMO...

Dawson showed signs of being more aggressive, but he is going to need way more than signs against B-Hop and he isn't getting much room to improve. He probably should have taking another fight before this one... You never know though. Both of these guys have what it takes to beat the other guy, but I will give the edge to B-Hop because I believe he has realized that he has to bring the fight each of the 12 rounds.

Cotto will fight Martinez for a last fight, money grab, but I don't think his heart is in it anymore cause he is half-assed fighting and on top of that it is against bums. The Cotto that out-boxed Shane is best Cotto that we will see and Pac killed that fighter's spirit.

yeah he should have another tune up fight....

you mean Margarito?

No Martinez... I don't care what anyone says. Martinez gets another mean KO, people will start take notice and a lot of cats from 154 to 160 are going to have to fight him.

Cotto is an Arum fighter, unless Martinez turns to the darkside, don't hold your breath waiting to see that fight. But he'd definitely knock Cotto the fuck out.

Cotto is fighting Margarito in december...

I know... I thought you were referring to Cotto retiring after Margarito. I was just saying that if Martinez knocks the blocks off another victim... the machine would go full force in pushing him and Arum/Cotto would eventually take it for one last payday.

I don't know Dibella had some shit to say about Arum....I don't see them making any big fights for a while....

Arum talks big shit about everyone, but money erases everything so why wouldn't he offer up a fighter like Cotto who is talking about quitting anyway.
