Bellator 148 video: Paul Daley faceplants Andy Uhrich in first round

Paul Daley took 120 seconds to land his shot on Andy Uhrich at Bellator 148.
But one shot was all he needed.
After backing Uhrich against the cage, Daley uncorked a perfectly timed, perfectly placed uppercut that sent his foe crashing to the mat face-first.
In a classy gesture, Daley threw his hands in the air and walked away, recognizing that the deed was done.
With the victory, Daley improves to 38-13-2. All signs indicate that former UFC welterweight contender Josh Koscheck will be up next for the hard-hitting Englishman inside the Bellator cage.

Former UFC Champ Benson Henderson Signs with Bellator MMA

Benson Henderson, the former lightweight titleholder of Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting, has found a new home at Bellator MMA.

Henderson, 32, on Monday revealed the news in a blog post on his official website.

“I’d like to officially announce my move over to Bellator MMA,” Henderson wrote. “I’m beyond excited for this next phase of my career, it’s a big move, like any move when switching employers or jobs after having worked somewhere for such a long time.”

Specifics of the signing were not mentioned in Henderson’s post, in which the fighter also thanked former UFC bosses Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for helping to change his life.

Henderson became a free agent after completing the final bout on his UFC contract in November, when he collected a five-round split decision over Jorge Masvidal in South Korea. UFC officials have confirmed that the promotion waived its rights to match offers for Henderson’s services.

Henderson exits the Octagon on a two-fight winning streak, with both of those victories coming at 170 pounds. It is currently unclear whether “Smooth” will remain at welterweight or return to 155 pounds, where he has held multiple world titles. His impressive 23-5 record includes wins against the likes of Frankie Edgar, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone.

Wanderlei Silva Signs with Bellator

The next phase of the career of MMA legend Wanderlei Silva began today with the announcement that “The Axe Murderer” has signed with Bellator.

The 39-year-old Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 UFC), the promotion today announced, has signed an exclusive multi-fight, multi-year deal. The signing appeared to be an inevitability after Bellator President Scott Coker said recently that the promotion was having serious talks with the former UFC standout and PRIDE champion about coming out of retirement.
But Silva’s first fight with the company may be a ways off. In February, the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted to suspend Silva for three years following a re-hearing on a lifetime ban issued about a year and a half ago.

The NSAC banned Silva and fined him $70,000 for evading a drug test in connection with a proposed fight against Chael Sonnen at UFC 175. Silva’s new three-year suspension is retroactive to the date of that original incident, May 24, 2014, meaning he is eligible to apply for a license on May 25, 2017. He is also required to provide a clean drug test upon applying for a new license.

While not a hard and fast rule, athletic commissions in the United States typical adhere to the suspensions handed down by other commissions.

In January, Bellator President Scott Coker said he was interested in signing Silva (35-12-1) to fight for the promotion, and that he had plans to meet with him to discuss a deal.

“Not every free agent is a fit over here, but Wanderlei is someone we would like to have a serious discussion with,” Coker told MMAjunkie Radio. “… We’ll have some dialogue.”

Silva became eligible to sign with Bellator when he was released from his UFC contract in January following a highly tumultuous bit of behind-the-scenes drama with the promotion in the years following his final fight in March 2013, a knockout win over Brian Stann.

After that, Silva coached “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” opposite Chael Sonnen and was expected to fight him at UFC 175 in July 2014. But both fighters had pre-fight drug-testing issues, and as a result the Nevada State Athletic Commission handed Silva a lifetime suspension from MMA competition. Silva took the NSAC to court, and a re-hearing of his case is expected next month.

Following the suspension, Silva announced his retirement from the sport and began to feud with UFC officials, mostly via rambling video posts. The Brazilian accused the world’s leading promotion of fixing fights, a statement that prompted the UFC to file a lawsuit.

The most recent chapter of the Silva-UFC saga saw Silva recant the fight-fixing accusations, and shortly thereafter, the two sides officially parted ways. With Silva contractually free to sign anywhere, Coker said he intended to pursue one of the most popular and successful fighters in the sport’s history. The first step was inking him to the Bellator Fan Fest appearance, and now the rest has come to fruition.

In a release, Bellator said it is not yet known if Silva will compete at middleweight, light heavyweight, or even heavyweight for the promotion. Silva is the latest highly regarded fighters to sign with the promotion, including former UFC fighters like Benson Henderson, Phil Davis, Josh Koscheck and Josh Thomson.

Andrey Koreshkov Dominates Ex-UFC Champ Benson Henderson in Bellator 153 Headliner

Andrey Koreshkov showed little regard for Bellator MMA’s prized free-agent acquisition.

The reigning welterweight champion dominated Benson Henderson at every turn in the Bellator 153 headliner on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, winning a lopsided unanimous decision -- 50-45, 50-45, 50-45 -- to retain his title.

Henderson (23-6, 0-1 Bellator), who entered the contest on the strength of back-to-back 170-pound triumphs over Jorge Masvidal and Brandon Thatch in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, had no answer for the superior size, reach and power of his opponent. Koreshkov (19-1, 10-1 Bellator) set the tone for the rout in the opening stanza, where he brutalized the ex-lightweight king with kicks to the body before nearly finishing the bout with a flying knee at the end of the frame.

It did not get any better from there. Koreshkov continued to attack the body and often forced his foe to shoot for takedowns out of self-preservation, as he landed clean hard punches, spinning kicks and knees and dropped his foe with an uppercut in the fourth frame. Unfortunately for the MMA Lab product, he was never able to take the stronger Koreshkov to the canvas. Instead, “Smooth” relied on heart and guile to survive until the final horn.

“I hate losing. I hate it more than anything,” Henderson said. “Hat’s off to Andrey. Coming in, we knew how tough he was. We knew it was gonna be a tough fight. Big as heck, strong as heck. I don’t like losing. I want to get back in there right away.”

Koreshkov has now won seven straight fights since being overwhelmed by then-welterweight champion Ben Askren at Bellator 97 in July 2013. Henderson has lost three of his last five bouts.

Props to Phil on the win. Liam's a tough match-up at 205lbs. Tall and rangy ... great on the ground when they fight for the title later in the year.

Fedor Emelianenko joins Bellator, set to fight Matt Mitrione at Bellator 172
mittrione-emelianenko.jpg

Fedor Emelianenko is returning to U.S. soil.

The legendary Russian champion will take on ex-UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione on Feb. 18 at Bellator 172 in San Jose, Calif. Bellator announced the match-up during its Saturday broadcast of Bellator 165, with play-by-play announcer Sean Grande revealing that Emelianenko had signed a multi-fight deal.

Emelianenko (36-4, 1 NC) is widely considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all-time. The 40-year-old Russian, nicknamed "The Last Emperor," reigned as the Pride FC champion during the heyday of the Japanese promotion, defeating a slew of notable names, including Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mark Hunt, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, and more.

Emelianenko retired from the fight game in 2012, but ultimately returned to the sport last year with a first-round romp over Singh Jaideep for RIZIN FF. Emelianenko fought only once in 2016, winning a controversial majority decision against former UFC light heavyweight Fabio Maldonaldo in a grueling back-and-forth affair that saw the heavyweight icon badly hurt several times.

But now Emelianenko will return to fight in the United States for the first time since 2011 against Mitrione (11-5), a 38-year-old former NFL player who has scored back-to-back knockout victories over Carl Seumanutafa and Oli Thompson since signing with Bellator in early 2016.
