I would give it five stars but... we'll get to that after the good stuff.
Fish & Chips or Fried fish sandwich... I had fish & chips, I had the traditional and most cost effective "Fish & Chips" order which is basic whiting. Now they do have Tilapia, Catfish, Lobster Tail options to get with your chips.
The Whiting was good, the batter wasn't overbearing. I was satisfied.
The Chips were exemplary, how did I know this? I didn't even think about dipping them or drowning them in ketchup.
They serve cool aid to anybody who drinks that, first establishment I've ever been in that serves Cool Aid.
Pros: The prices are right, the food is of good quality. It's fish and chips, not a burger spot.
Cons: The location is very far, idk how reliable the Schermerhorn location is because I went during business hours and the doors were shut and there was no food from what I saw.
It's definitely in the DIE section of Bed Stuy near bushwick and brownsville, not the DO closer to clinton hills and crown heights. You may not want to eat in here because that would mean you spending unnecessary time in the area, but the seating area is adequate not large.

Very good food and good take out, you will have a wait because they are cooking as you wait. If they would put up a wall with your order number on it, that will be a good thing. The noise inside prevents you from hearing your order number when called.

A friend recommended I eat here saying this was the best fried fish in Bed-Stuy. I'd heard that before about a spot in Harlem and I was sadly disappointed. Not here. I walked in, it was a while before I was greeted, my food took a while, but once I unpacked my food at home and took the first bite of my fried tilapia, it was all worth it! The young man working told me on my way out that he'd see me soon. He was pretty confident that I'd be back...and now I'm on my way back to place another order. My fish was delicious, impeccably seasoned and the broccoli was made to order and wasn't mushy. Loved it. Oh, I ordered a red velvet cake to share with my man for desert. It was dry. I'll stick to the fish!

I have been living in Bedstuy for some years now and I got around to trying this place. Which I am glad I did. The fish and shrimp combo is really good. The whiting and shrimp were fried to perfection. I really liked their seasoned fries too. The koolaid and lemonade was even refreshing. The prices are pretty good. I am glad I tried this place.

I had to collect myself before writing this review, writing out of anger is unbecoming.
My colleagues and I scheduled to have food delivered for our Christmas party on the Dec 17th 2012. We placed the order on Dec 12th, paid in advance, and called on the 14th to confirm the specifics.
We ordered the baked mac n cheese, fried fish, bar-b-que shrimp, and something else...cant remember. Our order was scheduled for pick up at 1pm on Dec 17th 2012. We received a call at noon stating that the mac n cheese needs a little more time so please allow them 30 more minutes from the initially scheduled time. We accommodated this request with the hopes that this would be the only hiccup. WE WERE WRONG!!!
Upon arriving at the location, the woman saw me (the one who placed the order in person the week before) and immediately slapped her forehead. After that, she followed with "oh ghod, the fish guy didn't come". I immediately looked behind me to see which sorry sap wasn't getting his order...only to see a wall at my back. Yup it was me.
So when they called us earlier to ask for a few more minutes (after having our money in advance), they neglected to tell us that they didn't have any fish or shrimp at Bed Stuy FISH Fry.
No apology was given, no explanation either....just shrugged shoulders and a half smile.
Remaining as calm as possible I asked for a full refund, to which they obliged (not like they had a choice after effn up the order) and I calmly/ unhappily drove back to work.
Moral of this story guys. This place is complete trash, the staff lack communication, and the professionalism needs to be turn all the way up...and they currently have the needle on zero.
DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!!
TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSE WHERE!!!

Hubby surprised me last night with a fish fried dinner from this poppin' spot in Bed Stuy. OK, so I'll admit -I was a little excited cause I've always wanted to try their fried fish. He was so sweet that he even brought the tartar sauce this time (I love him). OK, but, seriously, I've never seen this restaurant empty. Never! A good sign I guess, huh? So, there we were, eating our ffrriiied salmon!!! (nu one to me). Honestly, the fish was nice and fresh. The seasonings and the batter weren't too heavy. At least here I could actually taste the fish. I tried some of their collard greens too, but, I was a bit disappointed to see all that turkey meat throughout them over cooked greens.
Well, I doubt that I will return to eat here anytime soon though. It's just too heavy and fattening for me. Those greens and mac & cheese are swimming in fat, but, I'm glad to know that they're in the hood and I can get back to treat my palette at anytime.

Uh, I don't know what some of y'all are talking about. But this food is awesome.
I am absolutely in LUH-VE with the $5 lunch special! That tiny container packs a whole lot of food believe that!
I like that everything is freshly fried when you order it. Every time I've come into this place the collard greens and mac and cheese has always been made to the tee... Like it was my grandma cooking in that kitchen. Ooh wee.
AND you get a free drink! I'm sold.
Also, you can cue the Oscar awards for those who are describing the location of this place. It is NOT BAD. If you don't feel comfortable, then I don't know what to tell you. This is New York City. Contrary to belief, no neighborhood is completely safe.
Oh, and don't try and order over the phone. Its useless. Just go inside.

I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately that was not the case. Let's start with the good....the ice tea, the fries and the collard greens. That's it and the collard greens were just okay. I also had the fried whiting and catfish. The pieces were like 2 oz each (a total joke and ripoff). I've never had more bland soul food in my life. The whiting literally had no taste. The catfish nothing special and it had bones. The mac and cheese was dry and unseasoned. The price would've been reasonable if the food was decent. The woman behind the counter was helpful.
My husband said the hot sauce and tarter sauce was good. Lol
We've had much better. We do not recommend.

This is my "crack" I live a couple blocks from the bedstuy location and I go there often and get the same thing fish and chips. I am never disappointed. I try to eat all at once but I can never finish the whole box. it is made fresh to order. It is so yummy, I take all my friends there. It's my perfect little hole in the wall spot $5 well spent

Great lunch special.. $5 and some change gets you a couple pieces of fried Whiting fish and 6 pieces of fried shrimp with some fries.. aND A SWEET TEA.. come on son. This is the real deal. Sweet potato pie was great too (while hot).

I don't know what the bad reviews are talking about, my food was amazing. The fish was fried to order, and thought the sides were seasoned well (the mac and cheese was a little dry, but not a big deal). The yams were on point. When I went on a weeknight it was really busy and lots of take out orders, which was a good sign.
Also, the area is fine, you're not "risking your life" to get this food. I might use them for a catering event!

I viisted this establishment yesterday because I had two Groupons that were set to expire tomorrow. With my Groupons I was able to get six fish dinners. I was AMAZED at how much fish was in the container. I shared the dinners with two friends. We all enjoyed it immensely.
There was so much food left over that I had the fish today for breakfast wtih some cheese grits and eggs. We loved it this morning. I still have fish left over and that will be what we have for dinner with some rice and beans.
I am definitely going to cater from them for my upcoming bbq.
The prices are very reasonable and the food is delish.

Hey Bedstuy Fish House on Halsey St. And Howard Ave! Let's start from the beginning. These are reasons I WILL NOT BE COMING BACK YOUR RESTAURANT!
- The girl taking the orders over the phone and in person is the worse!! She's rude and obnoxious.
-The food, specifically the fried shrimp and fried fish was fried to the point of no return. It was like this more than once and it seems like old heat lamped pieces was added in with freshly fried pieces.
-The location isn't conducive for safety. It's so dark around there and creepy. Glass all over the place!
Your place is not good and definitely not going to risk my life for some inedible seafood. Yea, I know you make more than seafood but a person eats with their eyes first and the rest your "food" looks unappetizing!

-unbuttons pants- this food is ah-mazing!
As per my last review I did go back and try the catfish, greens, and yams dinner that my friend suggested. I'll try my best to write this review but "the itis" is kicking in. All I need now is a nap.
I called and placed my order (glad I did the place was packed!). . . my food was prepared and packaged for takeout in 15 minutes no waiting.
Everything was delish, I could do without the complementary piece of cornbread and I wish they weren't so stingy with the tartar sauce but otherwise no complaints.

This is my go-to fish fry spot. I have been here about three times including today and I am always pleased with the food. I tend to keep it consistent with catfish/whiting, greens and mac and cheese. If you can call ahead, DO or you may have to wait 15-20 mins - it's usually crowded!! Definitely check it out if you haven't already. Enjoy!!

Lunch with the co-workers can be so boring if there are no new restaurants to try. Since everyone at the job likes fish, why not try Bed Stuy Fish Fry?
Good news, you can order online.
Bad news, there is no description of the orders and if it's busy, are they even checking the computer??
We tried to call in the order, but the girl put me on hold and 10 minutes later, I was still on hold. As soon as I got into the store, I could see why. There was one cook and about 5 people on line in front of me. Even though the one and only girl was taking orders, she could have definitely used another hand. It took 45 minutes to get the order together and the fish (good ass seasoning) was soooo greasy. I felt sick right after eating it, and the iced tea (although good, actually slamming) didn't help matters much. Co-workers and I agreed that was the first and last try for Bed Stuy Fish Fry.
Back to the drawing board for new lunch spots.

This has to be THE BEST fish fry/soul food spot in BROOKLYN food is ALWAYS FRESH, delicious and very affordable can't wait to go back and try the pasta. The customer service was Superb. The wait time wasn't bad it was what I expected for FRESH food. The Slogan says it all:
We Are Not a "Fast Food" Restaurant.

YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE TO PLACE YOUR ORDER OVER THE PHONE!
I've passed Bed-Stuy Fish Fry several times. I finally decided to give it a try. I tried to call to place a pick up order. The lady answered the phone, mumbled something very fast and placed me on hold for 6 minutes. I hung up, waited a while, called back. As I was on hold for the second time, I decided to drive toward the restaurant while I was on hold to see if she would return to the phone. She actually did finally return to the call - as I was walking into the restaurant. I placed my order and waited a reasonable amount of time for the food. The food is delicious.
The next day, I decide to give Bed-Stuy Fish Fry a second chance at their customer serivice, maybe the previous day was a bad or busy day for them. Unfortunately, again, the lady answered the phone, mumbled something really quick and placed me on hold. The first time it was for 5 minutes 38 seconds. I hung up and called again. While I'm waiting, I decided to log on and write this review. As I reached the 6 minute mark, she answers the phone and finally takes my order. She didn't take my name or give me a ticket number or anything. So, I'm anxious to see how I will claim my order once I get there.
This place has good food. It's clean and comfy inside. However, I'm really big on customer service. If an establishment cannot handle phone orders - DO NOT TAKE PHONE ORDERS. If you MUST take orders over the phone, hire someone specifically for that purpose. The people on the phone are customers just like the person standing in front of you.

This is NOT fast food. Great dishes cooked with love by professional local staff. The atmosphere is laid back with VH1 soul playing R&B music. I would eat there for all my meals if I lived closer.
The German Chocolate cake is to die for. The peach cobbler is obscenely good. The catfish sandwich is great.

Thank you yelpers for helping me find a decent fish spot in BK. I'm a life long resident of BK and my old fish spot is no longer around and i've been on a mission to find a new one ever since. BSF is not going to be my new fish spot but it will be my new fried shrimp spot lol.
I went to BSF on saturday evening around 8 p.m. and it was empty. I ordered the jr. combo and a fish sandwich for my mother. I love fried fish!! love love love it. And I'm not talking about fish and chips type fish. I'm talking about that fish that your grandma makes on fish fridays! the fish that is made with the fish fry in the box, the southern way! lol So I was happy to discover this place on yelp! But i was a little bummed out because I like flounder. BSF serves whiting. And I think the majority of fish places do this because it's cheaper than flounder. I am not really a fan of whiting because it has small bones. When I eat food, I hate to examine things! I just want to fill my face full of heavenly food and chow down. Whiting has tiny bones, and I hate chewing on fish bones. It's not appetizing to me.
When i got home, I started eating my box full of goodies, and I proceeded to disect my fish. I started to eat the fish and it tasted kind of bland. The"fish" was mainly batter and the actually fish was kind of small. The fries were good and the shrimp were really tasty. But on a scale of 1-10 the fish was a 4. The shrimp were a 8 and the fries were a 8.

The customer service here is absolutely terrible!!! I went to use a Groupon which had expired, but the value of amount paid are always suppose to be honored which the cashier refuse to do so. I accepted the fact thar she was not going to honor it so I continued to place an order. The food was good but the ice tea was way too sweet. I ask the same cashier for a cup of ice, to which she replied that there was no ice. I then asked for a cup of water to dilute the beverage, and she brilliantly responded that there was no cup of water. REALLY?!?!? You gave me diabetes in a cup, but you refuse to give me water in one. Unbelievable! The food is good but they have to work on their customer service ethics.

I heard all about this place and had to check it out for myself. Very, very good!! A good down south kitchen smell when you walk in. Usually fish spots would have your basic menu--- fish and chips, fish sandwiches or shrimp and chips. Not here!! There are alot of different choices here--from turkey burgers to chicken alfredo.
I ordered a fish dinner with mac-n-cheese and candied yams. The fish was perfectly fried to a golden brown crisp. The mac-n-cheese could of been a bit more cheesier. The candied yams was exactly that! Sweet and savory with a hint of cinnamon. I will definitely be back to try everthing else on the menu. The waiting area is mixed in with the seats if your dining in. So you might be cramed a bit if it's crowded or wait outside.

The food is alright But the customer service is HORRIBLE! The young lady taking my order was overwhelmed between the phone orders and the people in line. I requested Coleslaw, macaroni and potato salad she turned to ask the cook if those items were going to be available & he said "If they don't see it we don't have it! She turned to tell me and I just said never mind just give me the fish sandwiches thank you. The couple in line behind me were offended and left - then it took 30 minutes for the sandwiches to get done in the meantime a young lady entered the restaurant that was obviously a friend of the establishment She said Ya'll know what I want and a meal appeared in front of her. Maybe she called in, but all I can say is things could have gone a little more tactfully Too bad because the fish is all right

I loved there food!! I been craving for fried fish and there is no spots in my area (canarsie). This was my frist time coming here and I was happy. Everything was good. The mac and cheese, the whiting, fries.
My friend ordered some shrimp and she enjoyed hers as well. It is a small spot and it is a little wait on getting your order but it is worth it once you get it.

I rarely give a place 5 stars so this place is great. Simple, fast service. I ordered the fried fish, Mac and cheese and candy yams. I loved every fattening bite of this food. I really enjoyed this place although I didn't ait and eat, I did take out. If your looking dot a great soul food spot, this is it. Try it and u won't be disappointed! Enjoy!

Better than ever on my most recent visit, new spicier breading that stuck better, reasonable size pieces of fried scallops, crispy and delicious. The sweet potato fries were still great and my co-diner was happy although I can't recall at the moment what he had.

It hurts me to write this review because I had high expectations for this place. I really wanted to like since it's in my neighborhood but Bed Stuy Fish Fry made me want to cry. When I first heard of the spot, the food was alright, the best thing I had was the mac and cheese, the worst was the fried fish, it was bland. After ordering from BSFF over a period of time I noticed that their food became really really bad. My mac and cheese was oily and too salty but the worst offense was the hard as a rock dry as the desert cakes. All of the cakes I've ordered (3 red velvet, 1 German chocolate) taste like dough. The only decent thing on the cake was the frosting. SMH I haven't ordered from this place since 2010.

Great soul food! Had the fried catfish dinner with green beans and yams. Everything was tasty and they kept soul music playing just enough to induce the itis

Once upon a time, this place was worth the trek since we are true New Yorkers and we don't drive. The place used to be a tight fit on a busy night and your clothes would come out smelling like fish, so renovations were definitely in order. The bottom line is with the amount of food you got for your buck and the freshness of everything- this place was 4 stars. Solid.
Fast forward to today: BFF looks better than it used to. Still not the most comfortable sit-down restaurant; it's simply a take-out spot with fancy (but still tight) seating. VH1 soul blasts from the flat screen mounted on the wall, the music was tasteful and smooth.
Neither of us have plus-sized appetites, and the former four star rating (that we never wrote) was because BFF could accomplish filling us both with one order. This time we ordered the Fish and Shrimp combo (as usual) and two sides Mac n cheese (cuz I'm not sharing that!). The meal came out to $16.50. We opened the bag and much to our chagrin we found a box that looked smaller than something I'd give an elementary school kid for lunch that contained all the fish and shrimp for the order. The "four pieces" reminded me of those cheap chinese restaurants that say you're getting four wings but you're really getting "wingettes". So, we had four whitingettes, and twelve pieces of shrimp. The fries tasted 30 minutes old and the mac and cheese was "aged" as well. I was completely underwhelmed (as my harlem homie loves to say).
Gone are the days of bed stuy do or die fish fry serving us enough-to feel-guilty-about-a-family-of-four-sized-portion going to only two people. Now they're rationing like we're still neck-deep in a seafood recession.
Go check it out, but do us a favor and tell them to stop with the whitingettes and give us some good sized whiting filets and not the junior sized meal. Last thing: it's cash only, so leave your plastic in the wallet.

I love eating here the food is very affordable and always fresh! The service is pretty good depending on the day and when its not super crowded but all in all one of my favorite places to eat near my home

How excited was I at the possibility of no longer having to trek to Harlem for some great fried fish? Extremely!
BFF is a very small restaurant with a steady clientele it seems and since I'm 5'2" I know great things come in small packages so I'm still excited.
I ordered crab cakes and chips my friend ordered the fish and shrimp combo. Everything is made to order so it takes a looooooooooooong time.
They have. Huge window that allows you to see directly into the kitchen which makes the germaphobe in me happy.
Finally after drooling watching a worker scoop pounds of sides into containers (4 ice cream scoops of yummy looking Mac and cheese is one side order.....NUTS!!!) my food arrives too small to eat in so we eat in the car.....
My crab cakes were tasty oily but tasty. My fries were too soggy for my liking but my friend loves soggy fries so no wasted food. The fish I sampled needed a few shakes of good ol' Lawry's the shrimp were crazyyyyy good. The lemonade was sweet just like I like it.
The staff were very nice and I do plan on going back to try the Mac and cheese and maybe something like BBQ chicken if they have it but for fish and crab cakes? Harlem here I come.

very good spot! i normally go for the fish and chips but today i got that boneless jerk chicken and those collard greens!! Let me tell you, that place has my full attention, it is clean, they are professionals and very serious in that kitchen, their food is really really good and i highly recommend everyone try them out.
plus, i LOVE the girl who's always taking the orders. She lights that place up!!

Try their crab cakes - they are to die for. The jerk or blackened shrimp *& scallops are also my personal favorites. (I tried the garlic shrimp once... the garlic was so overpowering, I couldn't finish it... but the seasoning was great, just too much for my pores, lol)... Also the macaroni and cheese, candied yams, fries, fried fish.... EVERYTHING here is absolutely AMAZING. I have to stop myself from eating here every day! Definitely a local spot who's business is booming. Clean.. friendly staff (you always see the same people in there... thus they're always working hard).
