Looks like Mexican ring legend Erik Morales could be facing Lucas Matthysse, and not Jorge Barrios, for the vacant WBC super lightweight championship on September 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Word out Argentina is that Golden Boy Promotions and Mario Arano, manager of Lucas Matthysse, reached an agreement today. Morales-Matthysse would take place on the undercard of the big Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Víctor Ortiz extravaganza.
Morales, who is seeking to become the first Mexican fighter to win a world championship, was initially slated to face Jorge Barrios or Anthony Crolla, which caused some controversy in that neither fighter is currently ranked in the division. Matthysse is rated #7.
