Former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson has hired Emanuel Steward as his head trainer, replacing Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, according to a news release from his promoter Gary Shaw.

Dawson lost THE RING championship and two major titles when he was upset by Jean Pascal of Canada in August, his first loss. A rematch is in the works for early next year.

“It was very frustrating watching Chad, who I think has an enormous amount of talent, fighting the wrong type of fight against Pascal,” Steward said in the release. “At this stage of my career, I’m only going to work with fighters who can achieve greatness, and I see greatness in Chad Dawson. Chad Dawson will regain his light heavyweight title and perhaps add titles in the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions. He is that talented.”

Said Shaw: “Chad needed a change in direction, and we think Manny Steward is the perfect tonic. … Much of Chad’s past success is owed to his former trainer, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. But as they say, styles make fights, not just inside the ring but inside the gym, and after reflecting on several issues following the Pascal fight, a change in trainer seemed to be the prudent decision. However, with that said, I have the utmost respect for Eddie as a man and as a professional.”

Steward seems to be the trainer of choice for fighters after a bad lost....Wlad...Cotto...now Dawson...

what he did with Wlad is really amazing....he mad Wlad a safety 1st fighter which he caught alot of hate for...but he made Wlad damn near unbeatable now....

and Cotto looks better...

Dawson in the Pascal fight lacked aggression and could have finished Pascal in the 11th IMO....Chad is a good Boxer....do you guys think hiring Steward will revamp Chad's career....?

You can make a naturally aggressive fighter a safety first fighter but you can't give a guy a killer instinct he wasn't born with. Chad will be better but when it comes down to it, dude lacks heart imo.

Could be. 2011 may be the year we find out if he's a true winner or not. Defeat is one thing but not being able to bounce back is another.

He is a Paul Williams style of fighter with numbered days.

:hmm: Clarify. One thing no one ever calls Williams is a "safety-first" fighter.

I disagree, if Williams had Dawson's skills, he'd be unbeatable at 147-154. And if Dawson had Williams aggression at times, he'd be top 5 in the sport, all he lacks is a killer instinct because he has everything else a fighter needs.

That's why I wanted him to clarify that statement. No way he sees Dawson and Williams as similar fighters, though right now, they're in similar positions.

Yeah I agree, when he fought Pasqual I thought he was the better fighter but he just didn't go for it. He just stood pat like because he was champion the belt was going to stay with him.
