Because the players didn't want him as coach no more and if the players not playing for you then its time to go. I'm guessing that's what happened here. They used him as a scapegoat for why Deron Williams and co. are underachieving.

Oh yeah. I consider Jerry Sloan one of the best coaches....well since i've been watching basketball. He's up there with Phil Jackson IMO. He couldn't take it no more. I peeped game when he left. Sloan dealt with Malone and Stockton for YEARS and had no problems. This nigga come around and gets him and Avery fired. Avery who has coached in a championship game just a year after becoming a head coach? Naw....people want to give Deron the pass but not for this man. He getting good coaches fired. Avery gonna be good. He'll get a TV gig if he wants it and will get another chance at coaching a young team. Or at the very worst he'll be on someones staff. He needs to be coaching in this league.

It isn't in Carmelo's DNA to be a vocal leader, although he is trying very hard. We got Kidd, Sheed, Chandler: proven winners who have won championships and can focus the team on and off the court.
