Record-breaking 165,000 PS3s sold at UK launch
18:45, Mar 26th 2007 by Neil Long
New format becomes fastest-selling home console ever over its debut weekend.
ChartTrack has confirmed that 165,000 PS3 units were sold during the console's launch weekend.

The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 in its opening weekend back in September 2005.

PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.

Europeans Reject the PS3 Due to High Price

Although the media characterized PS3’s launch in Europe as “controversial”, regular gaming fans all over the continent reported that in their countries Sony’s console stalls on stores’ shelves.

Desperate to get good press after a series of disasters (both concerning the PR and the manufacturing circuit), Sony readied at least 1 million consoles for the European debut of its next-gen gaming console, in order to stop any type of criticism that might appear.

Sony's senior PR manager for Europe, Jonathan Fargher, made the best resume for this kind of situation, in an interview with GameSpot UK: ”We're almost in a lose-lose situation--if we sell out on day one, then people will ask why we couldn't possibly have met demand, and that we should have been aware of the high demand for the machine. But if we don't sell out on day one because we've put steps in place to make sure that there's a steady stream of stock into retail, there's a large number of units on day one, then people will question why we haven't sold out.”

That is of course true and perfectly logical. But despite Phil Harrison’s attempt to make the PS3 more attractive ("There are benefits for European consumers. There are more games available, more Blu-ray movies, and we've updated the online PlayStation network.") Euro-gamers treated the launch with more indifference than anywhere else in the world....

But the most “famous” failed debut by far was in the French territory, where 95% of the consoles available at launch site remained unsold. Although Sony officials were expecting at least 3000 persons- and for that had mobilized 40 police officers- only 50 true-blue fans showed up. The co-organizers of the Paris event called it…a “non-event”....

Despite the efforts, some fans were just not satisfied. One British fan said on GameSpot that: “As a hardcore gamer I've not missed a console launch since I got an Atari 2600 as an Xmas present in 1978, but I'd not pay £425 for a games console, I'm the demographic that Sony is aiming for, buys loads of games has money to burn. But at that price its not worth it. […] I'm lucky that I get to go on Business to Japan once in a while (I work for Honda), so I bought my PS3 for £260 in Tokyo 3 months ago, So how come the PS3 is £260 in Japan and £425 in Europe, Japanese wages are higher than European wages, Shipping don’t cost £165 a time. We are ripped off in Europe all the time and we let them do it....

However, outside Virgin Megastore on London’s Oxford Street there was only one person- 17-year-old Rihatsu Thomas- to stand in line to get his PS3: “I thought there would be more people here,” he said. “I hope some more people come soon.”

PS3 PAL launch - a flop or not?

There has been a lot of talk about the Sony Playstation 3 launch. Much of the focus has been on the especially embarrassing Australian launch, where reportedly the press outnumbered the fans. But really, should Sony be concerned?

PS3 is "two, three years ahead of the market" says MS boss

UK senior regional director for MS has been speaking to the times about the arrival of PS3 across Europe last Friday.

"In the technology and gaming there's really little in the PS3 where I can say, 'Gosh, I wish we had that'," he told the Times online. "The biggest threat that Sony has for us is the brand that's been established around it."

While Thompson admitted that PS3's graphics would give 360 a run for its money, he said that Microsoft is leading the race in the online department: "More and more we're seeing that the online experience is a really important factor. Sony has come up with an online world that seems to let you do just about everything except gaming.

"It's two, three years ahead of the market. People won't want to replace their entire DVD collections, and they'll get a better resolution with a standard DVD on an Xbox than a PS3. It's nowhere near the importance of the format war between VHS and DVD. The internet is becoming an increasingly important medium. Surely online is going to be the distribution method for much of the high-definition content.

You can read our exclusive interview with Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of gaming and Entertainment and Devises Division UK, here, where he asks where Sony's killer games are.

ok im done for another week of throwing fuel in the fire

Say what you say, but Sony needs to lose on this one. Think about it, if they bounce back, gaming is going to become too pricey. WTF $600 is not just buying a game, you can buy some stock with just $600. I can see why Nintendo made the Wii so cheap, that shit is fun as hell to play and they're about to put a patend on the light sensor technology. Nonetheless gaming shouldn't be so damn much to do and I applaud Nintendo for that. They don't need to be in direct competition with either Microsoft or Sony. That's some O.G. shit right there cause it's saying that fuck the rest we've been here longer and we're smarter.

I'm still playing shit on my PS2. That God of War 1 and 2 is fire.

Peace

I agree with you that $600 or $500/400 is too much for a videogame system......but I don't see my PS3 just as a game system so thats why I had no problem getting it.....

I basically believe that half way through the PS2 life, Sony said to themselves "we are in alot of homes" this is the best time to take advantage of this and make more money in the LONG run and have some control in how disk media in delivered........so the main reason the PS3 is that expensive is because of its BluRay capabilities..... now this is the question, when sony releases the next PS4 they say their game software will be e-distributed or something (just downloaded)......so if the next Playstation is still 600 or 500 then I'll have a problem, but I can understand why the PS3 has its price.....

there is an article somewhere out there about this "other" war that is going on........

for a while now more consumers have left their living rooms and have been spending more time in front of a computer.....

Sony and alot of friends.......

movie studios (BluRay backers)
hardware companies (fellow BluRay players) who also make HDTVs etc

are trying to bring you back in front of your TV (one reason PS3 doesn't have a VGA cable to hook up to a monitor where as 360 does)

Microsoft and some friends want to keep you in front of computers/set top boxes that use Microsoft software..... they entered the Gaming market and want to unify console gamers with PC gamers (good for some, while others don't care)

what is crazy is that I read somewhere where Sony is working on an OS that involves Linux to rival Windows......shit could get ugly in the next few years

either way both are just trying to make Money.......

Me personally, I can't wait to start fucking with Nintendo again (left after the N64, loved PilotWings) but then the GameCube threw me off and I'm not too much into the NintendoWii........ Xbox games remind me too much of PC gaming/PCgames and I don't trust the system itself........

PSone, PS2, and so far the PS3 have been great too me....but again thats just me......everyone has their own taste.....

now know I wrote "read somewhere" a couple of times this post....but I'm too lazy right now to look up the links.......

and yall could put up the Colin Powell pic now......

Looks like someone has bought all of Sony's Propaganda.

You forget they were giving away free 46" HDTV's with those PS3's at one event. So even the biggest Sony hater would've gotten one for that and the free ride home. I would have and then I would've given the PS3 to someone who wanted it and took the HDTV. Shit it's a free HDTV!

 @ This

If Sony knows that you will pay $600 for their machine, especially when the majority of the games come out on both systems, you can guarantee that if they sell more than the 360 and Wii, the ps4 will cost more.

Just by buying the ps3 you let them know that you are willing to pay top dollar to play your precious video games. If you would have been "outraged" like the people in Japan when they first heard the price, Sony probably would have dropped the price from Jump like they did with them.

So don't get mad if the price is higher, because you contributed to it.

What Does TEAM NINJA SAY.....

Has it been difficult to develop for the PS3 overall?

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=107423

For us it's not a question of being easily to develop for, that's a relative term. When we first got our hands on the hardware it took us a while to get back into the flow of working with Sony, because they way they do things is a little different. The developers that say it's too hard to develop for and complain about it are missing the point. It sounds like an excuse to the consumer to us.--Yosuke Hayashi, director for Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PlayStation 3.

There are a lot of people out there that bought the PS3, and it's not a question of whether it's easy or hard. If your going to do a project you have to do the best you can. It's like if you bought a CD and it sounded bad and the singer said it was because the studio and the engineer were no good. Ultimately it's up to that person to make sure they have the quality that's needed. Look at what were able to do and the quality we are able to achieve and that speaks for it self. I think people will be satisfied with what we were able to do. If we can do it then other people will be able to do it as well.

Officials from Japanese publisher and arcade manufacturer Namco Bandai have announced that the company is developing a series of new arcade games which will use the Cell microprocessor, according to a new Reuters report.

The new arcade hardware will also use the same Nvidia designed RSX graphics chip as the PlayStation 3, which will make conversions between future arcade titles and the PlayStation 3 relatively easy.

Further details obtained by Japanese newspaper the Mainichi Daily News has revealed that Namco Bandai's Tekken 6, the latest iteration of its popular fighting game series, will be the first game to debut on the new hardware, due out later this year.

Hey Sony, No Lying In South Africa!

No one will argue that the PLAYSTATION 3 is powerful. But more get up and go than a computer? A PS3 ad that appeared in South Africa stated:

The PS3 is built on the revolutionary cell-processor, which is 8 times more powerful than most computers... [and] RSX Graphics Technology — twice as powerful as the most advanced computer graphics engine available today.

Four South Africans actually disputed these remarks on the grounds that the advertising was misleading and that there was no proof to support these claims. What's more, the country's Advertising Standards Authority actually upheld these complaints and had the ads withdrawn. Now that's powerful. Brian Ashcraft

London PS3 Launch Gives Out TVs to All

How's this for nice?

The BBC is reporting that everyone who purchased a PS3 at the London launch of the console received a free 46-inch HD television and a taxi ride home.

Holy!

That's About GBP 250,000 worth of televisions and cab rides to more than 100 gamers. The guy at the front of the line waited a whopping 36 hours.

So let me get this straight. Wait two days in the U.S. for a PS3 and you get a gut full of shot. Wait two days in the UK for a PS3 and you get a free cab ride and television.

OK, no more whining about how you guys had to wait longer.

Sigma: Constant 60 FPS, 1080P & Real Time Self-Shadowing..."Never Been Done"

In a Q&A interview with Team Ninja game dev Yosuke Hayashi he states the following in response to a question ask to him by Gamepro.

GamePro: Can you talk about the overall graphics and what people can expect technically from Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PS3?

Yosuke: It's not so much that we brought the game over to the PS3 as it is we more or less are recreating Ninja Gaiden with the most up-to-date graphic techniques in order to take advantage of the hardware. In order to have this be a great experience for both people who are new to the series as well as those who've enjoyed it since the beginning, we want to provide an experience that looks totally new and fresh. One of the best ways to do that was to have a game that runs at a 1080p with a constant 60 fps, and utilizes real-time self-shadowing. No other game as accomplished all three of these goals at once.

Fanboys can have a field day with this one: Digger Key10000 snapped a pic of a controversially worded retail ad in the UK that positions the PS3 as a Blu-ray player that "also plays great games." For all we know it's perhaps positioned in a Blockbuster video store where it would make contextual sense, but to a hardcore gamer the ad reads like a parody no matter where you put it. Truth in advertising or a marketer's jab at Sony? Depends how much you like Talladega Nights, I guess.
