At The Rate He's Going Statistically - And Assuming He'll Win Multiple Rings...

Do you think Lebron James has a chance of surpassing Jordan? Kobe is my favorite, but even though he could very well equal or surpass Jordan in total number of rings, he'll never be Jordan's equal or superior statistically.

However, Lebron is definitely a stat's guy, and it would be a complete shock if he didn't win any rings in his prime years. With all the hoopla that this guy seems to be capable of generating, I think the media would have no problem declaring him the new G.O.A.T if he can at least get 3 or 4, and the numbers are there...

What do you all think?

He is already starting his 7th or 8th season this coming here... he will need to begin winning IMMEDIATELY. Also, it is unlikely, unless something unexpected happens, his team will be the favorite to win this year. You never know what could happen in the future but winning 2-3 championships is a MAJOR accomplishment. Most players dont fall into a good situation like Kobe did with the Lakers where he could rack up 3 titles at a very young age on a great team. The chances of him matching Jordan are almost next to none... he will need to win a championship is 50 percent of his remaining seasons at least..

Well, if he chooses his team carefully - which it appears he is - racking up rings may not be a huge issue.

I think a 'Bron-Wade combo is good for at least three. Though that tandem doesn't seem likely at this point.

What about statistically?

Edit: If I'm not mistaken, Mike didn't win his first ring until he was 28, and he ended up with six. I know it does come down to mileage, but it has to be somewhat encouraging that Mike didn't start winning immediately, either.

still a team game, not to discount the questionable things the front office does

25 years old.. if he gets tha team that HE wants.. which involves a certain 26 year old and possibly a certain 28 year old? unless something catastrophic happens.. yep, he'll past MJ in rings but stats.. nope, gotta share tha wealth

Lebron has a chance to surpass Kobe but until somebody surpasses Bill Russell when it comes to rings does it really matter?

Peace,

Good analysis here. Lebron is about 26 years old. Not only would he need to start winning now, he'd need to keep winning indefinitely to pass Jordan.

The general consensus is that Jordan is the G.O.A.T. I mean, you can't knock Russell's number of rings, but Jordan produced at an incredibly high level statistically...

...offensively and defensively. Not to mention, all the accolades are there, and he did it without a dominant center. Very few thought that possible.

Jordan did not have to surpass Russell in rings to be recognized as g.o.a.t. so think a little...ok??

Co-sign.

Also with his young age people are assuming he has 12-13 years more of playing when in reality he's taken way more abuse than the average 25 year old athlete.

In addition people are just handing this brother rings. People assume because he's a great player he's automatically going to get a ring. There are plenty of great players in every sport who never win a championship, don't think it can't happen to Lebron.

All these "ifs" thrown around. The man has not won one single ring yet. Not to mention, Kobe started his career coming off the bench. LeBron has been the central focus of his team since he has been in the league. The comparison is not there yet, other than the fact that they play in the league together at the same time.

I dont think that Wade thing is going to happen.

Jordan didnt win his first until he was 28, but he ran off 6 of the next 8. Lebron already has the same experience that Jordan had at that point in terms of years. That is just not going to happen...especially consider the Lakers are out there and they still have at last two good years left. It is difficult to run off 2-3 titles straight..

Playing devil's advocate a bit here, but let's say he leads a team to 5 or 4 in a row ... i think he leap frog's Kobe and is in the same sentence as Jordan as far as the media goes....

Also if kobe wins #7 ... which isn't far fetched ... does he now get in the same sentence as MJ??

I'm of the crowd that hated he was given so much before he deserved it ... BUT...

...Lebron is a rare talent. He seems very interested in winning, and I see no reason why he can't win provided the right squad is around him. I hate to say anyone is a sure thing, but damn...

...I'll just say I'd be shocked if he didn't at least get two.

Not only does he not have the numbers, but...

...it has been proven with Barry Bonds that likability matters tremendously. You're not getting that G.O.A.T title unless you are beloved by the media.

Yeah man. Lebron is a great player. However, I think for the next two years, unless someone is injured, the Lakers will be the team to beat. Then it is not like the East is not stacked. I could see Chicago making the right moves with Lebron and taking him places. If he stays in Cleveland, forget about it.... 1 or two titles tops..and not soon..

That is such a HUGE if though. I mean...I want to see him get back to the Finals before this talk of running a string of titles together even begins.

This won't matter to some cats but when you look at complete bodies of work neither Kobe nor Lebron can say they won on every level because they can never go back and be NCAA champs.

If we just talkin' about the league then once they get to 6 rings it's a legitimate discussion.

Despite no rings he is #2 in marketability and recognition nationally/internationally...they was saying tho how Kobe's ring may be the differential factor there...put him in a city like NY and even if he can wait like just a year for a championship then the sky's the limit for him...NY is a tough city to play in but dude is more than capable of handling the media there

The reason Jordan is considered the G.O.A.T. has more to do with "how" he played the game more than his stats, rings, MVP's, etc... all combined. Jordan played with a passion that everyone watching him could see and feel. When the team was up/down the look in Jordans eyes made you feel the same way he was feeling. No man will admit it but i'm sure that when he won that 4th championship and broke down crying some dudes were crying right along with him. I really believe that is the reason so many people hate Kobe, they say he is patterning his game after Jordan but with Kobe they don't get that feeling they did with Mike so they Kobe has to be a faking it. For that reason there will never be another Jordan because you can get the accomplishments but combining that with the heart and passion for the game that Jordan did is something i don't see happening

Im a fan of Lebron but Why is it so necessary for Lebron to win a Ring then multiple titles? If it doesnt happen organically why is it necessary for it to be manufactured. He's arguably one of the 1 or 2 best players on earth...if he doesnt win a Ring what does that make him like 42nd or something

People are saying it won't change much, but Lebron playing NY will catapult his name/brand to a completely different level. Hell, I believe if Kobe had one his rings in NY his name would be even bigger.

Their is simply no market like NY.

That's the standard.

Jordan was not considered the best until he won titles. Hell, Kobe had to be win without Shaq before he could be considered a LEGITIMATE great by many.

The game is about winning. You can have all the talent, but if you don't win, all the talent and stats simply don't count for as much.

Basically...was debating this w/ pops and I just don't remember players like Jordan Magic or Bird letting their teams down in major games...they may have lost important games but it won't for lack of effort or them just having an off nite when their team needed them

Dudes here are very big on rings I remember some cats were tryna say Robert Horry was better than Karl Malone cuz he had more rings

I disagree ... didn't happen with Willis, didn't happen with Ewing ... and if Lebron got swept in the finals like he did with CLE they would have rocket launched his Akron ass outta the city

the Lebron demographic is getting older ... all the flashy stuff ain't gonna cut it much longer ... His "NBA Wonder years" are over ... 15 minutes of fame coming to an end being in NY won't do anything but delay the inevitable imo .... time to produce ...

Winning championships is always a huge issue, no matter what team he's on. It's not just a matter of who goes to his team but where other people go as well and injuries can be dealbreakers (Perkins doesn't hurt his knee, Celtics win championship this year).
I don't see LeBron and Wade being a good match at all. Wade's a good shooter but not a great one and LeBron needs a great outside shooter to open up lanes for him. The Cavs should have been or should be going hard for Ray Allen. Just putting names together isn't enough, they have to be matching parts that bring different things to the table.

LeBron James is already on single name status (Madonna, Prince, Beyonce). He can't get any bigger in NY than he already is. It's not the 80s anymore. The only thing that can make LeBron a bigger star is winning and it doesn't matter if he's in NY or Memphis. Whereever he wins a ring will become the center of the basketball universe.

Pretty much what Ive been saying. The only thing that matters for Lebron is winning a title. His star cant shine any brighter until he has a ring and can be called a champion.

Willis Reed? The NBA superstar as we know them today did not exist in the 70s and Ewing doesn't compare to Lebron as much as I like Ewing he was a Knicks superstar but he was not on the same level of play as cats like Bird Magic Jordan and Shaq and now Kobe and Lebron...as for the media comment I think Lebron can handle that there would have to be countless years of no winning (championships) before they crucify him
