Arsenio Tells Kanye Get “The F*ck Outta Here” For Using Word “Slave”

Kanye West seems to have got his facts wrong and ruffled the feathers of Arsenio Hall. During his speech at the GRAMMY Nomination concert, Hall dismissed Kanye’s accusation that racism caused The Arsenio Hall Show to be discontinued in 1994.

During his interview on The Breakfast Club in November, Kanye said that Arsenio Hall was fired from his show for “turning up too much.” Hall refuted that claim and gave more context to the end of The Arsenio Hall Show in the 90s:

I just left my show, the white man didn’t do nothing this time, bruh. Save that for when the White man do do something. Don’t muddy the waters of racism with my bullsh*t, because it was not racism. I just left my show.

A reason Kanye may feel Hall was fired for “turning up too much” is the commonly believed notion that Hall’s controversial interview with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in February 1994 upset CBS, where the show was aired. In an interview with VIBE Magazine this past September admitted that the interview may have destroyed some of the love people had for him.
Hall was not finished with reprimanding Mr. West as he gave Kanye and the media present a quick history lesson on the term “Slave” and denounced its use in songs:

I hate the word ‘slave’ used in songs. The f*ck outta here. Do you know what that word is? Do you know what that word is all about? Nobody can use ‘slave’ in pop culture. If you’re in the music business, you shouldn’t f*ck with that word. Too serious an era. Too serious a problem in America. There is no one that’s free to move around this country that should use the word ‘slave.’ Do you know what it meant to slaves?

That's how I've felt about it. I hate when people like Kanye try to throw it around to get kudos and I hate when people try to seriously call athletes slaves. It's a slap in the face to our ancestors imo.

Arsenio sounds like he's trying to please his masters this time lmao. Hall knows damn well the context of slaves used now is different from slavery back then. We are all slaves to something, sports, cars, money, relationships etc

Your not a slave to any of that shit. Context my ass. We must have not seen enough movies about slavery or read enough slave narratives. Being born a piece of property and getting your ass beat at a moments notice, and having kids belong to someone else. Aint no modern context for that unless ur one of the girls from Ohio trapped in the basement or something similar.

Nope. He's 100 percent correct. Don't equate being superficial and driven by consumerism (slave to cars) to "slavery". He compared himself to the character of 12 years as a slave. GTFOH. Regardless of whom Kanye believes is holding him back, it's not even comparable to slavery...i.e. people who had zero choice in the matter.

Yeah man. It's crazy for people to even correlate it to anything else....much some some multi-millionaire making "art".

i don't believe he just walked away from the show..
maybe he was believing in his hype and thought he was going to have a successful movie career, all that other shit about wanting to spend time with family is bullshit

So the word 'slave' is bad but it's cool to call each other 'nigga'.

GTFOH.

and there we have it !! those who peep game peep game! arsenio didnt need to underhandedly try to reprimand Ye , yeah we all got our moments with dat nikkah but to say we do sorta kinda get where hes comin from even tho its wrapped in some major bs,! he is being patently dishonest! ..arsenio need to take half a seat, its not that serious but i get what hes saying but dont let these cacs use u to get at Ye to pleeze ur MASTERS! cos thats what":SLAVES" DO!

I remember cats comparing the James/Gilbert shit to slavery. :smh:Nothing should be compared to slavery -- especially squabbles between rich folks.

Yeah, but that's all YOUR speculation. The truth of the matter is, the ratings were on a decline and after the Farrakhan appearance on a February, the ratings took an even sharper decline. In April, Hall and the execs agreed to end the show the following month. I'm pretty sure if the powers that be wanted Hall off the air for the Farrakhan appearance alone, it would have happened right then and there. If the controversy helped bring up viewership and money again, you really believe he woulda went off the air still...

I'm definitely not trying to side with Kanye, but I don't remember Arsenio calling Prince out for performing with the word "Slave" written on his face.

No its not what im saying, theres a better way to have handled kanye's and million other black folx misunderstandin of the situation, he didnt need the put down:smh:, thats a story thats been around barbershops for years, so its only natural he'd pick it up and run with it and up until this very moment arsenio aint really addressed it publicly , as in what farrakhans association did or didnt do to his brand.!
peep game bruh, i fux with arsenio, he a good brotha but i just hate when cacs try to instigate shit btw our people and we dont see it .. wshh and vlad tv come to mind.

The fact of the matter is A LOT of people are simply annoyed by Kanye, period. I don't expect too many people to censor their feelings about him just like we don't here or anywhere else. With all the good and helping hands Arsenio has lent to black talent, you can't question him now cuz he's annoyed by Kanye' antics like just about everyone else. And the media is the media, no matter if they're black or white. I don't exactly believe whites have some supernatural instigating ability like some of y'all lol. WSHH is black owned btw.

well...yet they call each other demeaning words such as NIGGA

well that's blacks in America for you

self hate is so strong...maybe it will take another 400 years to emancipate themselves from Mental Slavery

People forget how REAL some of these comedians are when it comes to shit like this and politics. Arsenio Hall and Conan O'Brien keep it real on those matters.

-When Louis Farrakhan said “I would like to talk about Malcolm X’s death,” as a Black talk show host I have to take that to the community. Did that interview destroy some of the love people had for me? Maybe. But I’m just the messenger.

Ya'll are missing the point. Kanye actually brought Arsenio's name into it by publicly trying to use him as an example to justify his position. Did Prince ever mention Arsenio?

Now if Arsenio was just speaking randomly out of the blue, maybe I could see people wondering what his motivation is. But in this case he has every right to speak up b/c Kanye put his name out there.

He's basically saying don't put my name in that shit cuz "you ain't been doin' the education"

i don't believe he just walked away from the show..

in an interview with Commie Chung Hall said he would do ONLY five years on his show.

at the five year point he did not attempt to continue his show.

thats fact.

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Peeps tend to use the "R" word first as well, in a few cases it's more about $$$ than it is about Black & White.

Says who? It ain't cool either!

Heh, Arsenio just did a play on truth. He left his show because he was getting the "Time Slot Jerk Around" and they moved him multiple times even as far back as 1AM I think. But he got the TSJA because White people in charge thought that he got too big for his britches and didn't stay in his place, know his role.

Kanya is an idiot who doesn't realize his minstrel status. I wouldn't want that dude speaking on my shit not knowing the entire story, either. Nobody wants the broken clock that is only right twice a day keeping track of time. :smh: Nah.

Bump for providing context.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
The Arsenio Hall Show shook up ’90s nighttime TV with hip-hop generation guests, culture-defining gags and iconic interviews. As Hall prepares for the legendary show’s reboot, the actor/host drops gems on his grand closing and reopening

-If you’re doing anything new, you’re going to be met by opposition. In beginning there were times when white folks weren’t feeling The Arsenio Hall Show and black folks had yet to get on board. The day Snoop was to come on my show, a lady crushed his CDs with a steamroller for the press. I felt very alone.

-I saw Rick Ross on Jimmy Kimmel Live! one night and smiled. I remember a time when I’d have to fight a month to get somebody like Ross on. I’d get a call from the suits like, “You are going to talk to Tupac about his mom turning him on to marijuana?” And I’m like, “Yes, motherfucker!”

-When Louis Farrakhan said “I would like to talk about Malcolm X’s death,” as a Black talk show host I have to take that to the community. Did that interview destroy some of the love people had for me? Maybe. But I’m just the messenger.

-My biggest triumph is succeeding in late-night culture as a minority. A lot of our most talented entertainers have tried—from Whoopi Goldberg to Ted Danson—and it didn’t work. You just don’t know what God is going to let work.

-After I left the show, Martin Lawrence called me on three-way with Jerry Bruckheimer and said, “I have a script for a movie called Bad Boys.” I go, “Guys, I left show business because I have some personal shit I want to do.” They thought I was nuts. And to this day, I think I was nuts. [Laughs]

-I left because I needed balance. My relationship was falling apart. The one thing about success is you are burning the candle at both ends. You got to put time in your relationships to make them work.
-Part of me wants to help the show’s legacy for my son. For the last 12 years I’ve been making him breakfast. But he needs to know that other side of me, too. To be a man you have to see a man.

-There’s a contagious fun about Jimmy Fallon; he’s revolutionized the talk show format. And Jay Leno has kept it no. 1. You have to figure out how to exist with both of these guys. NBC fucks everything. NBC would fuck up a wet dream if they could.

-I’m the guy that stays ahead of the curve—I don’t want nothing old in the room but me. —As told to Keith Murphy
