Luxury exhib chain plans $35 film tickets

By MARC GRASERA recession may be looming, but a group of investors thinks Americans are ready to pony up $35 for a movie ticket.
Village Roadshow Ltd., Act III, Lambert Entertainment and the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund have partnered to bring the luxury cinema circuit Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas to the U.S.

The partners will spend $200 million to build 50 theaters nationwide over the next five years, with the first two venues set to open in South Barrington, a suburb of Chicago, and the Seattle suburb of Redmond in October. Others are planned for Fairview, Texas, near Dallas-Fort Worth, and Scottsdale, Ariz.

Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.

But the circuit will especially push its culinary offerings -- made-to-order meals like sushi and other theater-friendly foods from on-site chefs (a service button at each seat calls a waiter). Moviegoers will have to pay extra for any food they order, however.

The Burbank-based company's hoping to attract 10 million "upscale and affluent" consumers per year to its theaters that will be housed in high-end shopping centers and malls. Each complex will typically house eight screens.

"It's a new way to go to the movies," said Graham Burke, managing director and CEO of Village Roadshow Ltd. "It's like what Mercedes is to a Toyota or like flying first class in an airplane."

Village Roadshow founded the Gold Class Cinemas chain in Australia in 1997. It has since expanded to other countries, including Singapore and Greece.

Company execs said bringing the chain to the U.S. is a "natural extension" of the brand.

"The demand for luxury moviegoing in the U.S. is very strong, and by working with our partners, we are delivering on that demand in a way never before experienced by the American consumer," said Kirk Senior, CEO of Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas.

In addition to its initial complexes in Illinois, Washington, Texas and Arizona, company also plans to build in California, Florida, Nevada, Pennsylvania and New York.

Gold Class Cinemas won't be the first luxury theater circuit in the U.S. Regal Entertainment, Cinemark, National Amusements and Sundance Cinemas offer similar services, including high-end food and concierges, at much cheaper prices of around $12-$18 per ticket.

Idea is that plushing up the current moviegoing experience will encourage auds that typically stay home to watch movies via their pricey home theaters to venture out again. But it's also a way for exhibs to make more money: Concession sales are kept by theater chains, while a little more than half of each ticket sold is split with the studios. Selling sushi and a glass of wine will command higher prices than popcorn and soda.

There are an estimated 300 high-end multiplexes operating in the U.S.

If the recession is stressing out some businesses, exhibitors aren't sweating just yet. Entertainment has long been shown to be recession-proof. And that's exactly the attitude Village Roadshow is taking.

"This is a top-end experience," Burke said. "People want to get away from their blues. I don't think the recession will affect it one iota."

saw this on the news. I already get mad when i pay for imax at 15 per ticket and 11 regular priced. i dunno about 35 man.

I was thinking along the same lines as you...but a few good points were made on the main board to this subject....one being...how much does dinner and a movie cost you?.....this is sipposed to have a bar, valet parking, and regular eating food...not the nachos and hotdogs that have the texture of a walking stick...

but you supposed to pay for the food. not really a deal in my eyes.

$35?!?! For what? I don't want any high class shit when I go to the movie, all I want to do is see the movie, which is kinda hard today with motherfuckin' cell phones going off every five minutes and some bad ass kid kicking the back of my chair.

Regular movie tickets are already fairly expensive, not to mention that these days DVD's have a 3-4 month turnaround usually after a movie.

Not to mention that a increasingly large portion of the population are buying HD TV's, making going to the movies more of an inconvenience than anything.

See this type of shit makes me feel less and less bad about bootlegging...

They are out of their minds. It cost me $46 bucks last week to fill my car and it wasn't close to empty. So if I decide to take my lady to this "Luxury Movie Theater" and its going to cost $70. What are we getting other than seats? Popcorn, soda, candy it still isn't worth it. :smh:

At $35 a wop you're going to price those people out. You're not going to bring the kids at 35 a head. And I will get a muthafucka kicked out if he's on the phone.

If it means no kids running around, no cell phones going off, no babies, and hopefully NO GOD DAMN TALKING!!!!!....then I would....no, 35 bucks is too damn much for a movie ticket, I'll take my chances as a regular theatre.

Why would I do that when I can download the film and watch it for free in the comfort of my own home while eating drinking and smoking whatever I want along with being able to pause and rewind it as I please?

Thats cheap compared to the IMAX in London. We would pay £12.50 for a film on a saturday night which is about $25 at todays exchange rate....:smh:

If you go on a date to a MODERATELY priced place, e.g. Cheesecake Factory ($12-25 entrees), not Ruby Tesday ($7-$14 entress) and then take your date to a movie, it's probably about the same damn amount. Maybe more if you do dinner than a movie.

But overall, it's not cheap and definitely just a once in awhile thing. I like the sound of it tho...I would love sushi at the movies!

Damn am I the only person who enjoys going to the theater.

It's so much better than watching it at home.

My favorite movies wouldn't have been the same if I hadn't saw them on the silver screen.

No matter how many times I watch Kill Bill,Transformers or Grindhouse it doesn't compare to the first time I saw it as an audience member.

I think it's a very intimate experience.

Other audience members inhance the movies especially when you watch with genuine fans.

It's so much energy beign generated but nobodies doing any thing but watching a movie.

Feels really good.

Plus I don't mind supporting the people who put all of their creative energys into making a good film.

I wouldn't mind paying that 35. For a few extra creature comforts.

that's a comment to be remembered when the subject of "My man don't take me out no more" comes up on Tyra....:D:cool:

Honestly I would rather be chilling and relaxing with my man in private whether cooking, watching movie, playing music, whatever. I don't like out.

there's a movie theatre here that has the restaurant that serves you during movie and has a bar as well.

Not impressed.

There's a movie theater in a suburb of Detroit that I go to where you can bring in food from the outside if you so choose. Tickets are regular priced, and you don't get a lot of rambunctious kids or ringing cell phones. What's the point of paying twenty dollars more for the same thing?

I'm all for it , if it will keep out the loud black people that talk whike the movis is on, and answer their cell phones.

I'm paying $35 bucks and I still gotta come out of pocket for food? Going to the movies is already expensive as it is, so they can suck my rubber dick.

like you'd actually be paying if you went out on a date?...I remember a time when women wanted to be taken out.....90% of what you get if you would go out for anything can be done cheaper if you felt like the hastle doing it urself instead of paying others to do it for you...:smh: .

My biggest pet peeve is noisy cinemas/movie theaters. I despise it with a passion. I've been in the States for two years now and while the stereotype that black people are noisy in theaters exists I have heard a lot more white people shouting "Dude!" and other nonsense than anything else. I quite literally want to rape their eyes with a rhino horn.
If "luxury" theaters keep fucking idiots out, as well as kids that have no right being there (a Hispanic couple brought their crying baby to "Saw IV.") then I'm all for it. Granted, it is a little expensive but as a treat here and there I'm more than willing to shell out.

I'm with you. I love going to the theater too. It's still exciting for me for some reason. Especially with a man to a romantic movie. Nothing like it. I would treat myself to a place like this maybe once a year. But with people like me these kind of places wouldn't last too long
