i just got a new puppy on Wednesday

today in her stool i noticed worms :(

i have another dog that is about 5 years old...can he catch worms from her?

do i need to rush her to the vet or can she wait until monday

i concerned about my baby :(

Maybe read up about it online / Google the topic?

Or call some of your local vets/pet shelters just in case and to be sure?

now that ive done a google search im even more worried :(

can worms be transmitted through the mouth?

should i keep them seperated until i get her to the vet (my old dog doesnt like her...he wont have anything to do with her...but she will still try to play with him)

well i found out the puppy has parvo :(

i cried when the vet told me:(

does anyone work with animals that could offer me more information on this disease?

im highly concerned for my puppy...but also my 4 year old dog who has been in contact with her

i took the puppy to one vet...and my older dog to another and got 2 totally different diagnoses on the situation

can anyone offer me any insight:(

Nine times out of ten those are nematodes that you are dealing with. Your other dog will not get it from mouth to mouth contact, however he can them if licks in the area where the worms were dropped of at.

For parvo keep the other dog away from the puppies fecal matter. It can be contracted by either direct or indirect contact.

thank you for responding...

ive been feeding the sick one pedialite every 2 hours...shes moving around more...hopefully she will be able to make it

ive damn near bleeched my entire apartment...to my knowelege my dog has not had any direct contact with the infected dog's fecal matter. however since i didnt know about the bleech since yesterday im highly concerned about the indirect contact.

do you know the likelyhood of an older dog contracting the virus? he has had shots for parvo in the past...but he hasnt been up to date (last time he got a full check up was at the end of 2006)

Heartworms are contagious, but not directly from an infected dog to another dog. In all cases, baby heartworms must be transferred to a mosquito, then injected into the next dog (or back into the same dog or cat) by the mosquito, before they can grow into adults. So dogs acquire heartworms from being bitten by a mosquito who is carrying heartworms from an infected dog.

to prevent all this......take your pup to get its shots and keep them updated. you'll see a great improvement in less than a week.

parvo means that pup prolly never got is first shots or deworming meds.....he can be nursed back to strength....may take time

thanks both for responding...

i was lied to when i bought the puppy...i was told that she got her shots and dewormed...now i find out not only does she have worms...she has parvo too

it breaks my heart she was neglected like that...she has been fighting and as long as she wont give up on her life i wont either

hopefully my older dog is safe:(

i have had several dogs get back to full strength....just feed her and make sure se walks a few times everyday along with water and the doctors meds...she will be fine trust me

Just take your pup to the vet and get him a shot of dewormer. I just got a new puppy 2 weeks ago, took him to the vet and got dewormer. The next day he pooped the worms out like he was supposed to. He has been very active and not acting sick, so he is doing fine.

My mum and dad used to breed Dobermans. When we had a litter all the dogs & puppies were wormed at the same time to prevent cross contamination. It is impossible to keep dogs away from each others feces. Also wash your hands after being in contact with the dog, do not let it lick your face and keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes. That parvo is not good at all, our dogs were not taken outside until fully vaccinated in fact visitors had to remove their shoes before entering an area where the puppies or the bitch whose litter it was had access to. Parvo can take a puppy out in hours - I really hope yours pulls through it is not nice to see what was a healthy puppy deteriorate and die that way.

Will call my mum later to see if she has any advice to offer.

I don't have anything to add to this post, I just wanted to make the acknowledgement that this is probably the first time on BGOL where the term bitch was used in a factual and appropriate way and was not a slur against someone. LOL

Carry on......I hope your dog gets well.

^^^Oh the temptation....

If the seller lied & told you the dog had it's shots, and the vet states that your dog has Parvo, then you can sue the seller for Vet bills of the puppy, and any other animals that contract the symptoms from that puppy.

Parvo can be deadly to most dogs. Once your animal has Parvo, you'll have some decisions to make. The vet can treat the Parvo, and your dog can still die. Vet told me that it would cost $800, and the dog still might die. My wife was like, "Let's save her." The dog pulled through, and she's been healthy ever since.

But, if the dog lives, you'll have to clean the dog's living area (outside and inside). Some people say to put lime down (outside), but I sprayed the area with water and bleach, when my dog caught Parvo.

They usually won't get it again if they survive though. As far as the worms go... Give your dog some garlic, that shit takes care of worms and fleas.

Good luck Bro.

that is so encouraging to hear...i took 1/2 a vacation day to come home an care for her...

all the stories ive heard of parvo is so grim...its nice to hear a success story :)

the vet tried to get me to pay $1,200 to put her in a hospital and put her on a iv...i was like ummmmmm i dont think i can do that:(

he ended up telling me how to do it myself...since then ive gotten rubber gloves and bleeched damn near everything in my apartment..even parts of the carpet...lol

thanks for the info...and thanks getting more info from your mom for me

Spoke with my mum all she said was "get that dog to the vet immediately", if I remember correctly (but do not quote me) you need to keep that dogs fluid levels up
