Are any of your kids in a Montessori school?

Sorry no. The Montessori school in my area is not close enough to where we are unfortunately and as much as I'd like to give it a try its too out of the way. Especially regarding our son who is has ASD. If I moved to the east end though I would definitely see if they could cater to our needs.

Myself and a few other family members attended Montessori.

I dont know your religious background...but that is one of the first things. Its more spiritual though

What they provide is a more interactive, creative and "every day" learning approach can be extremely beneficial.

While every school and instructor is obviously different overall I believe there curriculum allows for more THINKING and that is very important especially I think for young girls. It creates a lot of independence and confidence and usually you wont find that in more traditional settings. They create a voice early on, not afraid to ask questions and a great educational foundation (like developing memory and comprehension etc.)

Finally...it can be VERY expensive.

If it is accessible and possible I think its a great option but it is possible to create this environment at home with some work.

Agreed 100% that is where all learning should begin. I am a big believer in starting from the beginning where teaching and learning are concerned. If you show interest and passion for learning your kids will follow that same pattern.

thank you:D

You gotta to be careful saying this to some parents thought because they can get VERY defensive and see it as a personal attack. I completely understand the difficulty of doing this both economically and sociologically. Especially with the changing family dynamic.

But IDEALLY this would be the case. I try to take my kids to museums, plays, galleries and restaurants.

All of these activities help develop them as not only functional people but students who embrace challenge and not easily intimidated particularly in an environment where they may be the minority.

We can build confidence, self worth and social skills within our children very early...WAY before they actually go to school.

My kids attended a Montessori School. Though my daughter has matriculated my son still attends the middle school.

I find that the school has helped to make them independent thinkers. It creates an understanding of sustainability and tries to balance academics and functionality.

If I were to mention my concerns, they would include the fact that my particularly school is even less diverse than the local public school (which isn't very diverse). Another concern is that my kids' classmates are all white and wealthy. Also, I occasionally wonder about my kids' adapting to living in the "real" world after the Montessori experience.

Still, even though it is quite expensive, I have never regretted putting my kids in there. Full disclosure: My wife and I have pretty high academic expectations for our kids. We're older parents so our focus is vivid and direct.
