It's hard to tell whether McDonald's owners are completely out of touch, purposely stupid, or both.

Nope, just the protestant version of prosperity gospel. The people who have money have it because they were blessed by God, and the people who don't are there because it's God's will. If they were living right, or wasn't put on earth to serve them, then God would make sure they are blessed out of that situation. The handful of people you hear that came from the Ghetto and now are millionaires is proof that faith, not anything else can make the same happen for you!

When you look at it that way, a lot more things make sense. Why some people can say Trump was sent by God to save America (because he's a billionaire) Why it's OK for rich people to pay less or no taxes at all. Why COVID was God's retribution on Liberals when it was hit in NY, and a hoax and conspiracy when it finally hit their doorstep. They are good people! God's going to make them rich like Trump one day! They just gotta have faith!

I would go homeless immediately and save on food and rent, if I felt somebody was trying to put me in a box. It is slavery living paycheck to paycheck. You don't have to be living on the street to claim these services, if you feel your projected income and expense will ultimately lead you into this situation than take proactive measures.
