Apple expects to sell 10 million tablet computers in the product’s first year, according to a former Google executive.

Lee Kai-fu, founding president of Google China until September 2009, says in a blog post he heard the numbers from a friend.

He added that the Apple tablet (rumors now call it the iSlate or iGuide) will be launched this month at a sub-$1000 price point. He says the device’s 10.1-ich screen makes it resemble a large iPhone.

Lee’s Innovation Works fund is an investor in iPhone-manufacturer Foxconn, although he denies that the information came from Foxconn or Apple.

they are going to sell like hot cakes...i wonder how the battery life of this tablet computers are going to be.

not surprising

apple has a very loyal cult like following

i expected the number to be slightly higher than 10mil

Its a big iphone with a 3g chip in it that will allow skype like calling. 3g will be gone within 3 yrs. Apple is pimping its base again. This product will be outdated within 3 yrs. The base wont care it has an apple logo n they'll b online at 2am waiting 4 a 10am opening.

I actually still havent figured out the actual point of a tablet computer....not because I dont understand them. I have been following them for years.... I mean the purpose... why would the mass market consumer need a tablet. I can see the need for an mp3 player like an Ipod..or even a smartphone like an Iphone... but if you have a smart phone and laptop...why do you need a tablet.. i know they will have the touchscreen, ebook reader, etc.. but still

apple sees that the amazon kindle is selling like hotcakes

so like typical apple, they re-innovate(is that a word:confused:) a product, add some additional features, and let their sheep(divine) do the advertising

the execs at apple are geniuses

Oh..Im not criticizing apple. They are going to produce a great product. There are already a ton of tablets on the market already. And yes...it is going to eat into Kindle sales because the Kindle is a limited product as it serves one function and even doesnt do that very well. If Apple does an ebook marketplace and sign some exclusive ebook deals, they going to slow the growth of Kindle sales.

and yeah..that is a strategy that Microsoft used to use as well..actually a book called Will and Vision discuss it a lot... lets the first tier come to market with half-baked products... then you figure out what consumers dislike about the product, etc... and then you (as a large company) use your leverage with distribution, resources, etc to dominate the market...the first innovators (despite common belief) usually get pushed out of the market..

but i just cant see what someone would really want this UNLESS it was very cheap...like techcrunch was trying to do with their Crunchpad into the product got derailed.

i read its gonna be 600...and cheaper if u go to a mobile carrier for a data plan i assume att again...

and that combined with the iphoners will crash the att network like no tomorrow...

interesting article - http://daringfireball.net/2009/12/the_tablet

i think that the tablet will blow up if/when Apple works out deals with content creators that utilizes the full functionality of the tablet to its fullest. just like what the iPhone did for mobile gaming, is what needs to happen with an industry and the tablet.

Newspapers, magazines, college textbooks, book publishers all have an opportunity to help their business by doing deals with Apple and recontextualizing their content to maximize the tablet's potential.

other than that, it's just another cool computer, unless it has a killer "app" functionality that makes it a must-get.

Same thing I mentioned in an earlier post... if they bring a Itunes or Iphone App Marketplace type of application for content creators, it is going to move a lot of units... and considering how important that has been for their other devices, I would fully expect them to do so

google and htc r coming out with a tablet also and remember google has a bigger library than apple when it comes to print media online plus they have deals with amazon's store with android being open sourced the google tablet will be better than an apple tablet

.

This already happening, there are publishers who have postponed the release of their e-books until Apple release its Tablet, because Amazon is robbing them mofo's Blind with the deals they are giving them and forcing them into exclusivity deals. Word is that Apple is going to give publishers the same deal they give app developers 70/30 while Amazon I believe gives them 30/70 and if they do an exclusive deal they get 50/50. Apple is about to kill these fools, and if you are an avid reader, this Apple Tablet will be a no brainer. I am getting mine day one..

Ive been holding out on the Kindle... shit is awkward looking and the black-and-white interface just kills it for me...just seems a bit clunky... Apple kills it with the hardware-software so things are going to get interesting... with a good price, I would possibly be on the market for one..

I'm getting this and the htc one. One will have a rapidshare account the other a megaupload account.

where's divine? one would think he be doing back-flips in this thread by now...

sounds about right, i'll wait for the second or third generation release though..

what will be interesting will be the competition.. I think i've only heard of HP working on their own tablet..

question is what will they offer to compete against the itunes store.. iphone would not be as strong if it werent for the itunes store

isn't this just a rumor

i thought about this though when i saw the movie 'avatar'...they were walking around with computer see-through tablets...damn, computers are getting there for sure...next step skynet

at this point...not really... it is almost impossible to hide things once things go into production because manufacturers have to purchase 100 of millions of units of hardware pieces, etc...and too many people in the supple chain..and the leaks begin..

well.. let me reword that. Technically is is still a rumor..you are right. But there is actually a lot of evidence out there to support the speculation of a real pending release for 1st quarter 2010

oh yes, i agree w/u 100% that a tablet is coming out sooner or later...in some form...and that secrets can't possibly be kept in our internet age...just wasn't expecting 1q 2010...that would be quite a coup for apple

i could see a tablet taking over basic functions: e-mail, ms office tasks, web surfing, e-book readers, while being sold as a space saver for students (no more lugging around heavy laptops) and businessmen (space savers for briefcases). we could definitely use it in our line of work but our company isn't hearing it as far as having the latest and greatest (i'm sure that it will be more than $600, i can see apple marketing it for $999 as a 'laptop replacement' for early adopters - keeping it just under the psychological $1000 price point)

i'll be in that apple store when it comes out too, looking...but i have to stop somewhere...have too many toys as it is

interesting to see how this works out for Google since so many newspapers and publisher hate Google since they feel that Google steals their content. Rupert Murdoch is on the forefront of this movement.

my problem with the Kindle and Sony's Book Reader is that format issue. if i have a pdf or chm file, i'm assed out. Apple will do a deal with all those content creators, pick a format that works for most, but the tablet will run applications that allow you to read other file formats and read it on the tablet.

if they really do include the App Store on it as the developers would begin to build apps specifically for it, :itsawrap:. shit is over. i'd cop it in a heartbeat.

yeah..google has a very shaky relationship with content producers...the very definition of love-hate....

Yeah, I can't see it being $600, I see it being $999, but no lower than $899.

no doubt. they fail to realize how much Google has generated for them. they just never knew how to utilize the web and build a digital business plan to generate revenue.

i have a 2 book deal with a literary agent and one of the books is coffee table book that had a big digital component built into it. the publishers were scared of it or just didn't understand it. my agent told me that book publishers are further in the dinosaur era than the record labels.

i hope this Tablet will help jumpstart the industry so i can get my deal.
