iOS 6: Apple drops Google Maps, debuts in-house ‘Maps’ with incredible 3D*mode

According to trusted sources, Apple has an incredible headline feature in development for iOS 6: a completely in-house maps application. Apple will drop the Google Maps program running on iOS since 2007 in favor for a new Maps app with an Apple backend. The application design is said to be fairly similar to the current Google Maps program on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but it is described as a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience.

While Apple has always had full control of the actual iOS Maps application design, the backend has belonged to Google. That will change with iOS 6 thanks to their purchases of Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9; acquisitions that*Apple has used to create a complete mapping database. Now that the application is fully in-house, it is being referred to simply as “Maps” (some people call the current version Google Maps because of the backend). We reported prior to the launch of iOS 5 that*Apple and Google had extended their Maps deal, and now it is obvious when that deal ends.

Signifying the application’s complete re-write is a new logo for iOS Maps: it is basically a redesigned version of the current iOS Maps icon with a view of Apple’s 1 Infinite Loop Campus, but redrawn with a new color scheme. Apple’s replacement for Google Street View will likely also be an in-house solution. C3 Technologies worked on street view*capability as shown in the image above.

The most important aspect of the new Maps application is a powerful new 3D mode. The 3D mode does not come enabled by default, but users simply need to click a 3D button that is conveniently and visibly stored in the app. Perhaps under the fold like the current traffic, pin, and map view buttons. This 3D mode is said to essentially be technology straight from C3 Technologies: beautiful, realisitic graphics based on de-classified missile target algorithms. This is how the Apple acquired company C3 Technologies described their technology:

C3 Technologies is the leading provider of 3D mapping solutions, offering photo-realistic models of the world for search, navigation and geographic information systems.*Since 2007 when it was spun out of the aerospace and defense company Saab AB, venture-backed C3 has redefined mapping by applying previously classified image processing technology to the development of 3D maps as a platform for new social and commercial applications.*The Sweden-based company’s automated software and advanced algorithms enable C3 to rapidly assemble extremely precise 3D models, and seamlessly integrate them with traditional 2D maps, satellite images, street level photography and user generated images, that together are forever changing how people use maps and explore the world.

On the topic of C3 technologies, a few weeks ago we heard that most of the C3 Technologies top executives that came to Apple as a part of the acquisition have left for new opportunities. It is common sight in the Silicon Valley to see acquired team members leave companies once their “job is done.” The C3 Technologies team leaving just ahead of iOS integration would be similar to Siri co-founder Dag Kittlaus leaving following Siri’s launch on the iPhone 4S late last year.

iOS 6 will likely be introduced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in mid-June. We’ve heard that many versions of what will become a final iOS 6 product have been floating around Apple’s Cupertino labs (the iOS team likes to work on many projects and then pull them all together at the end of a development cycle), but those expecting major home screen changes or Android-like widgets might be disappointed…*briefly, anyway.

looking at this pic which would you rather for direction?

The 3d isn't much of a selling point for me

was literally just reading about this on another site. i would rather siri give me turn by turn directions though :dunno:

Re: Apple drops Google Maps, debuts in-house ‘Maps’ with incredible 3D*mode

I knew this would happen. Google has been really lazy with their maps.

So, will iOS finally be getting navigation???

It's about damn time.

3D's cool. It's not for navigation purposes tho.

so basically they are again copying something someone else did, and labeling as "exciting, new, amazing" because we are Apple, lol... Google Maps has built in Navigation, that works, is free, and has street view and 3D mode built in... The API's allow for 3rd party voice packs, I have the SVOX British girl, she sounds sexy as hell... And with the recent update to Maps a few days ago, it's got Google Offers built in, so you can see cool discount offers in your area, according to GPS coordinates... Try again Apple.....

Long time coming I guess.. Apple treats Maps in iOS like a step child.

Hopefully Apple realizes replacing Google Maps is more than just putting in a new app that shows roads, directions and traffic.

Google Maps real power is in the data itself. Business listings, public transportation routes/updates, walking directions, special business offers and directions inside buildings (Android only, not the web app) are gonna make it tough to top.

Be interesting to see once Apple's app is released, if they even allow Google's own version of Maps in the app store

How So? I use it all the time. Turn by turn directions, I'm able to find shit nearby. Streetview comes in handy. Apple did this because they don't want to help generate revenue for a Rival. Just like I'm sure Windows 7 WILL DEFAULT TO Bing and its related services. At least on WP7 you might be able to choose although they are talking about locking down their ARM based tablets much like Apple does.

I'm down with anything that takes Google out of the equation. Those bitches are the blood suckers of the internet and its users.:smh:

nope it doesn't, when I'm on a road trip the Iphone never gets turned on

That's just terrible. All my family members who got Androids retired their Tom Toms and Garmins. The Tom Toms and Garmins want money to upgrade the maps where the Android apps don't.

" key point"google maps for the iphone doesn't give turn by turn.... but map quest does

yep.. plug the android into the aux port on your stereo and turn by turn thru your radio whilst playing your music.. even pauses the music to give you directions...

and another thing... apple ain't sent a car out to map shit... so any map apple uses came from the camera on top of that google car...

About fucking time. Is it 2007.

You obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about. :smh:

Google, the company that has walking and subway directions is lazy compared to the company that has taken six years to come out with a basic map app :hmm:

You miss, are an IDIOT... :hmm:

LOL @ calling Google "lazy" with their maps

This has been a glaring hole in iOs (not just voice nav, but the fact that it's not nav at all, it's just glorified directions).

On second thought, 3D maps could be useful in navigation, but I wonder how extensive the 3D map set would be. You can go to google maps right now and see that they have 3D maps, but only for certain areas. Downtown Boston is in 3D, but downtown New York is not.

Regardless, the implementation is crucial. If it looks like the picture of the strip, above, then I think it could be useful. But how would that look in a more congested area like lower Manhattan? Satellite probably works best there.
