Apple Closing Quickly on Research in Motion in Smart Phone Market Share
Tuesday October 27, 2009 05:04 PM EST; Category: iPhone
Written by Eric Slivka

Market research firm ChangeWave today released its latest quarterly Consumer Smart Phone survey, which includes survey data taken in mid-September highlighting market share trends for Research in Motion, Apple, and Palm.
In the horserace among manufacturers, the release of the iPhone 3GS has led to a big jump in smart phone market share for Apple and has placed them within striking distance of Research In Motion -- whose slew of models are still number one but have fallen to their lowest level in two years.

The report is an expanded analysis of data touched upon in September that showed Apple's smart phone market share rising from 25% to 30% between June and September. The new analysis compares iPhone market share to the performance of Research in Motion, which has trended slightly down to currently stand at 40%, and Palm, which appears to be stabilizing at approximately 7% of the market after a steep decline from its leadership position earlier this decade.

Overall, smart phone growth continues, with 39% of surveyed mobile phone owners reporting owning a smart phone, up from 37% in the previous quarter, and a continuation of a clear trend extending back many years as smart phones have continued to gain more enticing capabilities at lower price points.

Apple also appears poised to continue to eat into Research in Motion's lead in the smart phone market, with 36% of survey respondents planning to purchase a smart phone in the next 90 days looking to purchase an iPhone, with only 27% of those interested in Research in Motion's BlackBerry. The numbers represent a decline from the 44%-23% advantage held by Apple in the previous quarter, but as the report notes, the decline is due to a natural tapering off of enthusiasm after the iPhone 3GS launch and is actually a much smaller decline than was observed after the launch of the iPhone 3G last year.

iPhone Breaks 100,000 Approved Apps
from IntoMobile - Mobile Phone News, Information, and Analysis by Simon Sage

iPhone-Apps.jpg

A short month after announcing 85,000 apps in the iTunes store, recent metrics are hinting that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has approved over 100,000 applications for the iPhone (although only about 93,000 are currently available for download). All jokes about the proliferation of fart apps aside, the rate of growth and activity in the iPhone’s app market is nothing short of meteoric and has had many other manufacturers scrambling to get their own application stores up and running. While iTunes might be the original, it’s quickly becoming oversaturated; that’s good news for internal competition, but it does have a lot of developers looking to burgeoning on-device markets like webOS, Android, and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) where they’ll have an easier time to make a name for themselves. In any case, good on iPhone for reaching this landmark, and developers, keep ‘em coming.

Good, I hate BB's.

They used to be the shit for email back in the day but now everybody does email as good if not better.

Impressive for Apple and Palm can't be mad at this, the Pre "stabilized" the departure but they've got a long way to go.

"Responding to questions from New York Times correspondent John Markoff at a Churchill Club breakfast gathering Thursday morning, Colligan laughed off the idea that any company -- including the wildly popular Apple Computer -- could easily win customers in the finicky smart-phone sector.

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.'"

Jackass Palm CEO had no idea what he was talking about.

Good. Palm brought it on themselves. They sat on their ass for years with the same old OS that the treo had for years. They made NO attempts to innovate and once Apple came on the scene, THEN they wanted to try to come with something new and fresh but it was too late.:itsawrap:

At least the Blackberry isn't bad for your health...

:puke: Greenpeace: Apple iPhone Bad for Your Health :puke:

According to a Greenpeace report entitled "Missed Call: The iPhone's Hazardous Chemicals," the iPhone contains several dangerous chemicals, including phthalates in the vinyl plastic earphone wiring at levels that are prohibited in young children's toys in San Francisco and in the European Union.
This is the third time that Greenpeace has tested an Apple product since 2006. Similar analyses of a MacBook Pro and an iPod Nano revealed the presence of phthalates and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

However, the latest study marks Greenpeace's first test of an Apple product since CEO Steve Jobs made a public commitment in May to make a "Greener Apple." Apple specifically pledged to phase out all polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and BFRs by the end of 2008.
Apple did not respond to requests seeking comment on the potential suit or the Greenpeace allegations.

Palm is on the comeup....

I agree with what someone up above said about Palm fucking with that ancient OS for so long, but this WebOS shit changes that.

They're gonna have a strong swing.

Palm stock was all but dead leading up to the Pre and now they have a breath of life.

I'd like to see them rebound. More competition = lower prices and better products.

To be honest, I'm currently doing IT for Verizon right now. I keep getting asked when the "most reliable network" is going to get the iphone. To be honest, I don't see the fascination with them.

And for the guy who said BB's were overpriced, for a good while VZW was practically giving away those new Blackberry Tours - the buy one get one free deal.

Then we just came out with that HTC Imagio - it's like a Windows PDA. The Blackberry Storm 2 comes out on the 28th of November but it isn't much different than the first one. It has stream text messaging so it looks a lot more like instant chat...can do wifi with it and some other things.

I have a blackberry. And I like it

Iphone is a great device but I dont like the touchscreen feel.

My view is that this is a great thing for all of us...BB or I phone users. Competition creates better products for us all.

Let me be more specific, if you are CURRENTLY a Verizon customer and if you are not due for an upgrade yet then yes, they are expensive. Now I had the chance to get one a while back for $99, which isn't bad, but the data plan required for the Crack Berry was over $120 a month which is too much for too little in my book. That's why I held on to my enV2.

They're following the footsteps of Palm with an old OS that needs a major overhaul instead of the bullshit updates they've been trying to pass off as fresh OS releases.
