I'm asking if anyone taught themself how to speak a Foreign Language
I want to learn Spanish
I'm willing to devote 30 minutes daily for the next few years to accomplish this goal.
Is it possible to become a decent speaker in this time?
Any tips, experiences, downloads, resources, websites would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Found it that Rosetta Stone joint

Yeah I used a hacked version of Rosetta years back before taking a trip to Dominican Republic. Helped me but it's best also to be around and be kind of immersed in it. Speaking it with Spanish speaking people and constantly being around them helps.

I'm rusty now, but still know a good bit. Not full on convo but I can hold my own. Always wanted to take up back courses or follow a few apps like DuoLingo and others.

Oh the most important one...you probably don't need to buy Spanish with Paul

I didn't know about this until after I completed Spanish with Paul

Full course it's outstanding and free

Start here:

Do the other YouTube things I mentioned and use Duolingo for vocabulary

Not self taught, but took French Immersion from 1st grade through 1st year of college (an elective). Stuff like Math and Social Studies were challenging at times with the wording. Translating stuff to English as you worked your way through course work.

Took Spanish in junior high. Enjoyed many of the language similarities to French. Made things easier to process.

4 hours a day for six months, you should be fluent in Spanish. You got 4 hours a day too. Now if you were trying to speak something like Igbo, or Yoruba, it will take you a year or a year and a half to know it. It will take a bit longer to master it. Spanish is very similar to english. It is a romance language and they come from the same branch.

Buy Destinos video tapes and the books and you should be fine. You can find dvds on the web for cheap. See my other post as well. Good luck.

Yes, find a native speaker to practice with regularly and you should pick it up quickly. The online programs are good but you still need daily practice.

I'm learning Amharic right now. I don't know your mind but you will need more than 30 minutes a day for the logical change takes place in your brain.

I wanted to learn Igbo but it's not possible with how I learn a language. I listen to lectures but I also listen to news, shows and anything else in order to get my brain used to hearing the sounds. I've used this method when I learned Swahili. I just turned on BBC Swahili and let it play. I played a game with myself to see if I can figure out what the story was about. It's fun if you love learning.

how much do you suggest? I think with some of the suggestions like listening to spanish shows/ radio programs and things I can definitely increase it. Listen while at work, working out and driving I believe I can reach maybe 1 1/2-2 hours. Just looking for a manageable daily schedule and suggestions

How is the Amharic coming along for you? I had to google but I guessed right that it was an Ethiopian language
Thanks for those suggestions

We all learn different but I would suggest about three hours per day, plus listening to the native speaker for about an hour. I'm no teacher but four hours is needed to instinctively break your logical chains. Especially if the language is SOV like Amharic.

From a political point, Spanish is a losing bet. The Monroe Doctrine has caused the Americas to "band together". As the US gets an economic cough, the rest of the Americas get full economic flu. Africa is a rising power that the world cannot ignore any longer. It would be helpful to be able to communicating with the continent.

Just my thoughts

What are you using to learn Amharic, and what program did you use to learn Swahili before you started using BBC Swahili?

Just gonna be honest with you, 30 mins isn't enough to become FLUENT in a language even with spanish.

You're gonna have to immerse yourself in the language. Listening to spanish music, watching spanish tv, news in spanish, movies, netflix, youtube videos, etc. (Even though you don't understand everything).

Make spanish a part of your daily life and I'd say you can be C1 level in maybe 3-4 years (C1 is considered fluent in a language, almost native level).

Try this program that I've been using in the last year called dreaming spanish on YouTube (Free). It's a learning tool for spanish through comprehensible input. It has improved my spanish listening TREMENDOUSLY.

I highly recommend it.
