In this video, you’ll learn about fractional shares—an innovation that has made investment more cost-effective for a much wider group of people. Whether you’re a seasoned investor or just starting out, fractional shares allow you to build a diversified portfolio without the need for large sums of money. I’ll dig into how fractional shares work, their pros and cons, and why I think platforms that don’t offer fractional shares seem horribly outdated.

My aunt was over visiting last Sunday afternoon & we went out for dinner that evening. We were casually talking about assorted topics, including investments. Mentioning some of the rates of GICs and CSBs (Canada Savings Bonds) back in the day. The GICs were mostly for 3-year windows, whereas the CSBs were longer (with better interest) up to 5 and 10 years, if I remember correctly. Kind of like invest it and forget about it, and then cash it out much later on. She was smiling telling a story about some larger investments that she cashed out later on that were 15% interest. Bank teller was like - "Damn, do you mind if I call my coworkers over to see this?" Aunt didn't mind ... they came over and were politely like - "Holy shit" ... all quite impressed.

Thanks DC.

One of my best stories was in the early 2000s with grandma.

She would give family members savings bonds as gifts and be like - “that is your birthday + Xmas gift for the year, but it matures in 10 years”, lol.

As a young person it was frustrating being an impatient idiot.

But you sort of forget about it until you are in your 20s and then it’s time to visit the bank. And that $500 or 1000 with compounding interest of 10 - 12% for 10 years is worth quite a bit more.

It all works out in the end.

Compared to the GICs which were at 2.25 - 3.5 - 5%, or 2.5 - 7% over 3 years.

This is going to be a big week, what are your plays?

I have some Nvda leaps I bought last time it dipped, if it sells off I will turn them in to poor man covered calls.

I didnt miss IWM this morning. Sizeable amount of puts are printing.

Edit: out at 10:07.

This is something I wanted to do for my nepnews and nieces. I just give their parents money and tell them to put that joint into their college fund....Bonds would be preferred though...Have to look into how to do that

Nice. Props to you for looking out for your nieces and nephews.

My cousin lost his parents in 1997 and 2012. He has 4 kids (ages 2 - 17). I asked him and his wife if I could put their kids on my will in case of worst case scenario for myself. They appreciated that. Just in case him and his wife are in a tough spot financially in the future; help them look out for their kids. They are both grade school teachers.

In regards to college fund ... my parents had an RESP set up for us kids. Registered Educational Savings Plan. They contributed a bit to that annually and I think my grandma added some too.

When I was in college I paid for books and tuition via my own money, small scholarship & the RESP fund. Thankfully it wasn't as expensive as things are now (late-90s into early-2000s).

We could easily be looking at a negative payrolls print in the coming months as a result of DOGE. This would be the first negative print since 2020. I have been a structural bull on the economy and risk assets for the past 5 years. But, if DOGE can actually succeed, I will likely be a structural bear on risk *in the short term*. I wouldn’t sell any risk positions, but I would load up traditional risk off positions, temporarily. That could even mean long duration bonds!

Tesla Inc. sales tumbled by nearly 50% in Europe last month as the electric-vehicle maker's market share fell further in favor of rivals.

That's according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, which reported that Tesla's (TSLA) sales in the European Union and the U.K. fell to 9,945 in January from 18,161 a year ago - a 45.2% drop - while its market share dropped to 1% from 1.8%.

A fall in new registrations for Tesla came even as sales of battery-electric vehicles rose an overall 34% in the region. Growth surged across three of the four biggest markets, with BEV sales up by 53.5% in Germany, 37.2% in Belgium and 28.2% in the Netherlands in January.

And Tesla's competitors appeared to be clawing away market share. Volkswagen AG (XE:VOW3), which is No. 1 in new car registrations for the region, saw a 5.3% rise in sales over 2024, while China's SAIC Motor Corp. (CN:600104) grew sales by nearly 37%.

Wall Street has blamed Tesla's year-to-date 18% drop partly on its struggles to stay competitive in overseas markets. Sales also fell in January in its second-largest market, China, dropping 11%.
