Anyone here that works in the medical field?

I lookin to start a career in the medical field. Fuck this is like my 3rd career change and I'm pretty sure it's my last.

Did accounting for a couple of years & was even planning on getting all the desginations I could get in that field. But in the end, it was very unrewarding in terms of personal satisfaction and pay(the end result does not justify the mean IMO). There is no money in accounting unless you own your own business or is like a senior partner for like 30+ ys an acct. firm.

Anyway I'm thinkin of getting into the medical assistant field more specifically the Ophthalmology side of things. Instead of taking the conventional route, I'm thinking of going to one of those accreditted private schools(MEDIX) that u see advertise on TV sometimes where the programs is condensed to less than one yr. They say the workload is equivalent to 2-4 yrs in university

I have heard of a few glowing/positive reviews about them, but I ain't 100% sure. Besides at my age I can't sit in a classroom for another 4 plus yrs again(been there done that). Been to an oritentation session at a MEDIX school in Toronto & from what I see most of the people are range in age from about their late 20's to early 40's. I figure they themselves kinda fall into the same boat or category as me.

Some people say I should go in the Pharmacy technician side of things cause the money is relatively good.

But anyway is there anybody who has travelled the same route in life that I'm about to take? Whats your expertise :D :D

I was a lab Tec for lab corp i read ob/gyn slides. Then i went to Smithklien beecham before it became Quest. The medical field is good but you got to try to get into the hospital for employment the pay is good when you work at the hospital. I got my traneing at a comunity college thats your best bet.

I'm a Nurse going to school to be a Physician's Assistant. You should look into that. Starting salary is 70k to 100,000k a year and you work mandatory 3 days a week. You will be on call of course but you get compensated nicely with the salary. And you get to buy things like what's in my avatar. What else have you decided on?

ok there's alot of money in the medical field the hard part in making the money is joining the union because some job postings in the hospitals are only for union members so it's best u try and join the union first then depending on how much u wanna make and how long u wanna go to school for a example: starting $35k-$80k a yr for a surgical tech after going to school for only a year some hospitals offer the training u would basically hav to contact a hospital to see if they offer the training which is the best bet if that's what u wanna do because u can gain hands on experience and hav a lil summin to put on your resume or u could contact a unniversity to see if they offer the course i don't know if u live in the nyc area but if u do L.I.U. hav it and i think it's either kings county or downstate hospital that offer the course u just hav to hav a strong stomach for the business

Do not enter our profession if all you care about is money. You wont make it. Physician Assistants make pretty good money. You can thank the Vietnam war for that occupation. It does not take much school and they can make up to 6 figures.

Curious, arent Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners basically the same?
I heard Physician Assts make good money but thet PA school is hard as hell. Its only a year? I thought it was 2 years after your BA.Medical field is definatly good money.Bust your ass(no homo) in the classroom for a couple years and you are basically guaranteed a job because it is a specialized skill.I date alot of East Africans and them broads come here barely speaking English but study their asses off and end up in a well paying career within 4 years. As opposed to many of my homies that graduated from college only to be "in between jobs".

Naw, You dont need a BA to become a PA. Nurse Practitioners Need a BA in anything and Masters In Nursing. Nurse Practitioners do not necessarily need to get their RN. Most usually are RN's though. Physician Assistants usually take a two year vocational course.

PA school is 2 years, One year of med classes and one year of rounds. You need a BA in medical science to apply. My youngest sister just graduated as a PA last year. A woman that I date off and on is a PA to, and has been filling me in on the program.

There are a lot of vocations in the mental health side of health care.

1. Liscensed substance abuse counselor
2. Liscensed social worker
3. Liscensed physical therapist.
4. Dietician
5. Vocational Rehab technician
6. CPR/NCI trainer

Many states are going through mental health reform so alot of these specialties are in very high demand. The first three can bill medicaid directly so once you are liscensed it's like having your own company. The majority of mental health professionals we deal with on a independent contractor basis. The upside is huge if you want to run your own show.

I'm somewhat in the same position. I'm still in school though, I cant decide if I want to go to pharmacy school, or get into one of the PA programs.

Does anyone have any opinions about Pharmacy.

The only thing that I know about the pharmacy program is that you have to be an excellent math student. I do great in math, but to me it's too much to go through. I'm not discouraging you, If you want go for it. Also I do want some contact with patients. that is why I didn't want to be a pharmacist. The pharmacists I work with never see the patients.

Damn ... some good background on this video (one of my all-time fave joints, and completely IRRELEVANT to this thread, haha :) ) ...

Damn, this video takes me back to '96. We shot this video in a hotel that was about to be destroyed. I found out THEO from THE BEAT (then) was asian. lol I remember Dru Hill being there..sisqo was funny-style and nokio had a broken arm. Biggie (R.I.P.) got killed that night when we left the video to go to the Vibe party."

Have you come to a decision yet?

Yeah, I think I'm going to go with PA, instead of Pharmacy.

Mainly for the reasons you stated, I would definitely rather work with patients. Thanks for the input.

If you are in New York City
Contact Harlem Hospital and see if the Physician Assistant school is still there

Harlem Hospital should still have both Physician Assistant and X-Ray Tech Schools

Both take two years,
PA's make a lot more money than X-Ray techs and get a lot more respect
X-Ray techs get next to zero respect in the hospital system.
Lab techs get ZERO respect.

Think about this
Hospitals consider the Medical Staff to be
1. Doctors
2. Nurse Practitioners
3. Physician Assistants
The only people that can write a prescription

I would go for Physician Assistant

.

I'm in Alabama so UAB is most likely going to be my choice.

But I'm curious why do X-Ray/Lab Techs not get any respect?

Make sure the schools you are considering are credible in the eyes of employers. Vocational school coursework rarely counts towards a degree at a 4 yr college so also consider that if you are planning a BA/BS or higher.

You can become a Lab Tech by going to a 6 month Class
means Replaceable at the drop of a hat

Even RN's who can and do make Very Nice money
Can get fired quick if one of the three above does not like them
Even with the RN shortage, they get fired also

X-Ray techs like everyone else in medicine works under a Doctors license
You are seen as an Assistant to them

To a Doctor only a another Doctor is on their level
Everyone else on the planet is beneath them
Even with the Non harassment rules Doctors are suppose to follow these days

If you are in the OR and the surgeon throws something at you
You are the one that will be asked to leave, NOT the Doctor
Does not matter what job you have.

ever thougth about being a paramedic? very interestirng job and for the most part you are appreciated by the community...
