Currently in its 45th year of independence,what is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains a treasury plundered by private armies to benefit wealthy foreigners, often through non-voluntary labor. So it was perhaps darkly fitting when on independence day June 30 1960, King Baudouin of Belgium, himself a major stockholder in a mining company established by his grand-uncle, declared: "The independence of the Congo is the result of the undertaking conceived by the genius of King Léopold II." These inflammatory words drew an impassioned reply from the infant nation's first prime minister, to this day the only democratically elected leader in the history of the Congo. But less than 7 months later, Patrice Émery Lumumba had been literally liquidated by Belgian government agents in the wake of a CIA-sponsored coup.

Now, we have these estimates:

Britannica, "Congo Free State" claims that the population declined from 20 or 30 million to 8 million.

A 1904 report by Roger Casement's estimated that as many as 3 million Congolese died since 1888 (cited in Gilbert's History of the Twentieth Century; also in Colin Legum, Congo Disaster (1972).

Peter Forbath (The River Congo (1977) claims that at least 5 million killed.

John Gunther (Inside Africa (1953) estimates 5-8 million deaths.

Adam Hochschild (Leopold's Ghost mentioned above) estimates 10 million, or half the original population from 1885 to 1920.

Fredric Wertham, A Sign For Cain: A Exploration of Human Violence (1966) estimates that the population of the Congo dropped from 30M to 8.5M, a loss of 21.5 million.

As a result of all this, I've reevaluated the colonial toll. Where exploitation of a colony's natural resources or portering was carried out by forced labor (in effect slavery of a modern kind), as it was in all the European and Asian colonies, then the forced labor system built in its own death toll from beatings, punishment, coercion, terror, and forced deprivation. There were differences in the brutality of the system, the British being the least brutal and Leopold and the French, Germans, and Portuguese the worst. We all know what the Soviet gulag was like. These colonizers turned Africa into one giant gulag, with each colony being like a separate camp.

As a result of this research, I'm willing to estimate that over all of colonized Africa and Asia 1900 to independence, the democide was something like 50 million. This is way above my original 870,000. Even 50 million may be too conservative. If this figure were roughly close, however, then I must raise my total murdered by governments in the 20th Century from 174,000,000 to 223,000,000.

Excellent post, I think we all can learn a lot from our history and come to terms to why our people are so justifiable angry at the white man for these heinous crimes against our people. Many including myself find these figures staggering, but in fact they are indeed correct or very close to the millions when checked against various link of the Butcher of Congo.

I think now that we know the facts and the history books are sugar coating these atrocities we should get the word out through emails and or flyers showing these pictures and links to factual accounts of the real Holocaust. Maybe somehow it will reach the right person who can give this information the real exposure it deserves or someone who have the power to give it, its rightful place in the history books where it belongs.

These are the information that so called pro black groups should be bringing to light to enlighten and teach the young ones about how lucky they are and the struggles that were endured towards them having the freedom thats so blatantly wasted away today.

Many wonder at times why immigrants come to America and do so well, it is because similar events such as this in their country that make them appreciate freedom and utilize every aspect of being productive.
