Anybody Remember Foster Sylvers Compared to Michael Jackson?

He also co-wrote and produced Janet Jackson's song 'Come Give Your Love to Me'.

That song reached number 17 on the R & B charts in early 1983.

Most people don't know/remember that this was actually Janet Jackson's FIRST hit song!

Weird how it never gets any play anywhere today or even since the late 80s.

I have never heard that song again but I liked it when it was out.

Not even listed on Youtube!

Oh shit! Whatchall know bout' the Sylvers?!?!?!?!

The Boogie Fever album had a good song for every cut.

And I had a big crush on the sisters.

Right On! magazine was pushing them at that time. But what makes Michael Jackson the greatest entertainer of all time was his staying power, his transistioning power and just his overall talent.

I've never heard this song before ... and I see why. It was too synth pop for Black Radio in NYC during the 80's.

Had I not known this was Janet, I would sworn this was some Madonna wanna-be.

I'm surprised she doesn't sing it anymore. Or maybe re-release it since that 80's synth sound is back in style right now.

"BoogieFever, Boogie Down!":lol::yes:

They were like the Disco Jacksons who also rocked blowouts.

I think he and/or his brothers did the voices for the J5 cartoon.

Assist

Sad because I STILL thought that was Mike from the song, tone and timbre of his voice.

peace

The fuck!! I always thought this was the Jackson 5!!!

I always tried to find this goddamn song --- no wonder I couldn't. Shit. I was looking for the wrong band.

And I remember everyone thought the Jackson's song this song:

One Bad Apple was intended for the Jackson 5 but they decided to record ABC instead. Ben was written for Donny Osmond but he was on tour and coundn't record it , so it was given to Mike.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread yet, but there is apparently a Foster Emerson Sylvers on the Nevada Sexual Offenders registry. I know a few years back it was said to be "the" Foster Sylvers. Does anyone know if that is really the case

you can search the name here:

I was never able to really find out if it's the same dude or not, but the website is a .gov

Nah Playa, this was a sound that was on the rise in the early 80s!

This song got major airplay in NYC in '83, I remember cause that's when I first moved to Queens. Another popular song was "Video Burnout". I think it got play on 92KTU a lot and maybe 99X (which is now 98.7 Kiss).

Groups like 5 Star (All Fall Down), Midnight Star (Scientific Love, Curious), Dynasty (Here I Am) and Shalamar were synth keyboard driven.

I think she may have done this song on a different label and left on bad terms which may be why she doesn't even perform it!

On the real, I haven't heard that song in at least 20 years!

Good Find!

The Sylvers were hot for like a quick minute in the mid to late seventies. They were obvious J5 ripoffs and wannabes but The Jackson 5 were groundbreaking. There was no one else doing what they were doing for bubblegum soul and then funky disco and soulful r&b ballads.

This has been going on in every generation in modern music from the twenties until now. Remember The Monkees? They had a few hits of course but were blatant Beatle ripoffs.

I did still like some of The Sylvers' cuts though. They were also great for teeny boppers to have a crush on and to fill up the black teen magazines of that time. This was still when light skinned brothas were all the rage. Light skinned high yellow long haired black chicks like Jane Kennedy were also considered the stone foxes back then.

LOL, I actually liked the Monkees and their TV show.

Didn't like the Beatles however!

Except for "Yellow Submarine".

And I still remember "Right On" and "Dynomite" magazines!

That would explain why I never heard it then....
KTU and to extent Z100, which are the format stations this would have been played on in the 80's are white boy stations.
They played all that synth pop, puerto rican and Italian freestyle, club and danced music.

This is exactly where this Janet Jackson song would have been played based on the sound and not a lot of black people were checking for those stations back then.

As for Shalamar, The System, Midnight Star, etc... Yes, synths were an element of their sounds but it was more funk and RB driven and that's why they were staples of WBLS and KISS.

Still, if this was here first hit she should definitely reached back and sing it every now and then. I wouldn't have even know this shit had someone on the board not said it.

You learn something new on BGOL everyday.

Yeah I agree that back then WBLS didn't play it but at the time 98.7 KISS was still going thru the transition from pop to R+B, from 99X to 98.7 since digital readout radios were becoming popular. WKTU was just 92KTU which is now 92.3 K-Rock.

The post says that the song hit #17 on the R+B charts though so some Black stations had to be playing it.

That guitar does separate it from regular synth pop/R+B.

And yes, we all learn something new on BGOL everyday, LOL!

nice thread!! i've been bumpin the sylvers for a minute now.didnt really like the hits, kinda cheesy(imo)but they had some nice slept on album cuts.check these out:

Where Are They Now (91 Article)

Leon F. Sylvers III, 54, the eldest brother of the family who formed the group, became an acclaimed music producer. His hits included The Whispers' And The Beat Goes On, Shalamar's Second Time Around and Take That To The Bank and Gladys Knight & The Pips' You're No. 1 (In My Book). Recently he co-wrote Blackstreet's hit Before I Let You Go. Will Smith sampled And The Beat Goes On for his 1997 hit Miami. And Dr. Dre sampled Misdemeanor for The D. O. C.'s song It's Getting Funky.

"You can always do something new as long as you understand where you're from," said Leon, who has been married 21 years and has five children. "You don't have to be young. Just sound right."

Angie Sylvers-Polk, 47, has been a paralegal for nearly 20 years. Sylvers-Polk is divorced and has four children. Her son, Kyle, 19, is a dancer who has traveled with Christina Aguilera and appeared in the film Rize.

"I know that God uses people to touch other people and God intended for this family to use the talents and gifts he gave us to touch other people," she said.

Foster Sylvers, 45, who played the bass in the family band, is engaged and has three daughters. He is also an accomplished artist.

Fourteen years ago Foster was convicted with committing a sex act and is now a registered sex offender. He maintains his innocence and said that he is working to have his record expunged.

"I am going to sing again, for those who are broken, because I was broken and God fixed me," said Foster, a recovering drug addict who is now clean. "The bottom line is victory isn't won to the strong of to the weak or to the fast or to the slow, but it is the one who endures to the end."

Patricia Sylvers Deruso, 46, and her husband of 14 years, Lorne, are church elders. She is a praise and worship leader and is working on a gospel album with Foster.

James Sylvers, 52, is married and has two children. Ricky Sylvers, 49, is the father of five. James, a keyboard player, and Ricky, a guitar player, both have appeared on albums with Shalamar and The Whispers.

The Sylvers are looking forward to recording as a family unit.

"I see people asking where are The Sylvers now as a call, as a Macedonia call," Sylvers Deruso said, referring to a Bible passage. "I want people to know that we have answered the call and you will see us again."

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Edmund Sylvers died at 47 of lung cancer in Richmond, VA, in 2004 (JET, May 31, 2004). He sang lead on the group's biggest hits, Boogie Fever and Hot Line. In 1971 he was the voice of Marlon Jackson in the Jackson 5 TV cartoon. He recorded a solo album in 1980 that produced the hit single That Burning Love. Edmund was married and had 11 children, one of whom, Jeremy, starred in the 1991 thriller Child's Play 3 (JET, Sept. 9, 1991).

Thanks for bringing us up to date - I think. Wow, the charges that Foster Sylvers had were pretty wild. Dang!!:puke::puke::puke::smh::smh::smh:

What happened to the BIG FRO!!!

No Bullshit... but ,over the years, I've prolly won around 1200 to 1300 dollars betting muthafuckas that 'Misdemeanor' was NOT Michael Jackson...

I remember the Sylver's well. Them fucks had smooth ass afro's while the best I could muster was a Al Green natural. They were a Jackson 5 clone but they were talented.
