Any Tech Heads Ever Use Any Of This Shit?

marking thread for later use

for me - i use ccleaner, that's the business.

this 7zip may be worth looking into also...right now i use alzip

not really into too many of the others...you get to the point of diminishing returns with all these products on your computer...at a point, it just gums up the works. my m.o. now is to find the simplest thing that works, and stick with it until a clearly superior (and simple) app knocks it out the box

The ssd thing is still kind of iffy as to what is a good one and what is not right now. I still might get one depending on how fast this new rig is without it. You know before I start filling up the new hard drive.

And I got a 500GB and a 250GB seagate that I use for my WDTV player so I am going to make an image and store it on one of those two.

I'm going to keep my old computer as a test dummy for new software before I put it on the new shit by the way!

That's another reason I am going through all these programs. Testing them to at least see if I like them. After tomorrow this old one can burn in hell for all I care so I'm running everything on it. Old one is 32bit and the new one will be 64bit but I can at least get a feel for shit.

Cool, enjoy the new system.

Yeah that's what I'm trying to do with this thread. Get past all of the bullshit and determine what's the best of the best. I mean some of this shit I probably will never use so no need in having something that's the best at some shit I won't use!

This is the shit.

Virtualbox (formerly Sun, now Oracle) I use this to run virtualized instances of XP and various 'nices (i.e. Unices) on top of Vista 64. Any iffy software goes onto a sandboxed instance of XP. If it's dodgy, I can return the virtual XP to pristine condition by recovering from a snapshop image.

This is also very much the shit.

Clonezilla

Sure you have.

Perhaps that is true... and not the face-saving ploy I assume it to be.

In any event, I have downloaded hundreds, if not thousands, of files in that .001, .002 .003 format, where the poster expressly instructs one to join the files using Hjsplit, and in every instance 7-zip has rather smugly joined and decompressed the file and then looked at me like, what?

 :lol::lol: i can only laugh because i've been there. it will take any file and attempt to extract it.

nah leave that crap alone. :smh:

go here

and since we're talking software recommendations i suggest you get a program to mount images (alcohol 120%, power iso, iso buster, etc)

Explain that to me briefly if you don't mind. I've been trying to figure this shit out forever!

Ok so I got an ISO. Let's say it's a game. I burn the ISO and then put it in Alcohol 120% and I can play it without putting in the disc right? First things first.

So what about installing programs? I mean if I have a program (such as MS Office Enterprise which I will be putting on the new machine) can I install it from Alcohol too?

I'm collecting shit now. It's supposed to be here tomorrow so I'm doing the fine tuning on what I'm going to put on it. Going to clean it first with PC-Decrapifier and Revo Unistaller. Then running CCleaner. I downloaded a copy of Acronis to make a back-up after I clean it and then I'm starting in with the essentials like codec packs (can't remember which ones I need!) and drivers.

Hey nice system their Andey, if you don't mind me asking, but how come you went with the AMD system ? Great Specs nevertheless, should've waited though AMD just released their 890GX chipset, ah well good specs nonetheless !

Sure you have.

Cot-damn you. You figured it out. I lied on an anonymous message board to get e-props from people I'll never meet.

Anyway.. Andeyhollawho. My bad if my info was false. The shit didn't work for me so I assumed it simply didn't work. Prolly was user error the time I tried (not the first time & won't be the last).

Actually I was going back in forth with the intel system in the other thread but when I went to check on both of them the intel was sold out and the amd was on sale. All things being equal...

Yep. I use Virtual Clonedrive instead of Alcohol, but it does the same shit. When you mount an .iso, the computer thinks it's a disc in a drive.

This is the method that I use to install OSes in Virtualbox, i.e. from an .iso, instead of burning a physical DVD... which is, in 2010, some tedious bullshit.

True. Since I bought an Ipod and discovered WDTV I use my blank cd's and dvd's for frisbies!

I need to install Ubuntu on the new system though and I know that requires reboot so I guess I have to burn one for that right?

 yes indeed, what were the specs on the Intel system again ? Nevertheless both systems are very good, and considering that you don't play games, they should hold you down for at least the nxt 2yrs or whenever you decided to upgrade again, hell you could even sell that system on Ebay and make a nice profit !!!

I Picked Up A Copy Of Maximum PC Yesterday and it came with this cd full of shit I've never heard of. :dunno:

Supposed to be helpful utilities. Some I know and some I have no clue. Anybody use any of this? :dunno:

7-Zip
CCleaner
Exact Audio Copy :yes::yes::yes:
ImgBurn :yes::yes::yes:
Secunia PSI

Audacity
GIMP

Last year decided I was only going to use open source and/or free programs. No more hacked or cracked shit on my computer. The stuff listed is essential to maintaining my philosophy

Imgburn eliminates the need for the proprietary nero software. Burns everything nero burns and more and is light as a feather on your system.

For CD ripping, PLEASE only use EAC. Absolutely the best there is on a windows system. None other comes close except dbPoweramp. Which is almost as great too, but MP3 support is not free. So don't fuck with it. If they can charge for MP3, they can charge for all of it. Other (windows) rippers do not compare and are a distant 2nd. WMP is the worse at ripping. You're better off using Winamp

To your list I would add audio player Foobar2000. For archiving, organizing, burning, converting audio files, it's the best. Better than Itunes because it doesn't dump all the bullshit in your registry and is light as a feather on resources. And now it also has ripping capabilities with Accuraterip support which means it surpasses all other rippers and joins dbPoweramp as #2

Gimp is good, but Gimpshop is a little more user friendly.

^^^
Preciate that breakdown!

Yeah I never did really catch on to the whole loseless thing. I do like my MP3's at the 320kpbs though which is close but no cigar. With a bigger hard drive I might be taking you guys up on the EAC.

Ok I got a few questions here.

So you are saying that if you download software from here you put it in virtual box first to test it to see if it works. If it doesn't work or if it fucks up something you just recover virtual box with no changes or damage to your computer? Right?

And clonezilla is kind of an open source version of Acronis right? Makes back up images?

And last one...Greygoose has a copy of Alcohol 120% that is still up. Is that better than Virtual Clonedrive or is it about the same? I'm saying if I had to install one or the other which should I install?

Feel free to jump in fellas!

ive never used virtual clonedrive. the only other image mounting utility i've used is poweriso and i happen to like it. i have both alcohol 120% and power iso, and i just started using power iso because there was an image that only power iso had the power to open and i ended up keeping both. im starting to like power iso better because of the "ease of use". i like the idea of being able to right-click an image file and have options to just open with power iso without having to do an extra step of mounting the actual image file. im lazy. i like programs that accentuate my laziness. but i use both

maybe someone who has used virtual clonedrive can comment on how easy it is to use

You wouldn't happen to have a copy of poweriso I can try out do you?

And can anybody help me find a new version of IDM that actually works!

Man I cannot download EAC for shit! :dunno:

It keeps sending me to this foreign site and telling me they have the international version available only. And the real site says they haven't updated it since 07/2009. :dunno:

if you dont like the speed of copying and moving large files, i recommend TeraCopy. Its blazing fast and easy to use. I drag a 10gb blu ray movies from a usb connected hd to another usb hd in about 90 seconds. if you have esata its even faster.

I aslo use CCCleaner and Keepass

No real benefits in waiting, unless you want 2 more usb 2.0 ports. The additional pcie lanes won't make a difference in performance right now, the graphics are the same and ACC was removed although it still is possible to unlock cores if the mobo maker implements their own hardware. The only real attraction is native 6Gbps SATA support, but any higher end 790 board has a chip integrated.

Teracopy anyone? :dunno:

:yes::yes::yes:
Fast Copy is also good

and i just switched from VLC to KMPlayer.

just added some firewire ports, so teracopy should be even quicker.
