I've used pretty much all of those programs before, they are handy utilities to have to clean up your pc, save passwords etc.

Got some reviews? Anything a must have? Anything that's just bullshit and not needed? Getting ready for the new Windows 7 rig and the CD says that everything in that top list is a must have. I'm reviewing them now but wanted to get opinions.

CCleaner is one of my MUST have's. For a good deep wipe of temp crap and deleted items, either by explorer menu command or through the application itself (among other things), I don't think it can beat, especially since it's so easy to use and free. I'd be interested to see how the other stuff work as well.

Yeah so far I got CCleaner, Revo Unistaller and PC-Decrapifier on my USB drive to install first when I get my computer. Just to clean it. Got to check out something to back it up after I'm done though.

dont have time for a review right now but keypass, ccleaner, dropbox, image burn, and 7zip are a must have, I load those on every computer I use they are all free and barely use any system resources

Dropbox is tight. One of my reps put me on it a while ago. It acts just like a folder, not like a separate drive. So, if you move a file into your Dropbox it doesn't copy, but instead it actually moves. Acts just like a normal folder on your system, but when you or someone you choose to share it with turns their system on and have Dropbox installed and linked to yours, it's the SAME folder, and even notifies when something has been updated. You can use it on the desktop, installing it on each computer, or you can access the folder online, like typical e-drives. It's pretty useful for sharing something in situations where you or someone else need to update a file back and forth.

Damn. I need to look over that list again. I see some interesting things.

Secunia PSI

Secunia Personal Software Inspector

This shit right here!

It tracks all of the apps on your computer for security exploits and if it finds one it directs you to the latest patch for it as soon as it's available. Windows should do this shit instead of that every once in a while update shit.

Those are some pretty good free utilities depending on what you are using them for.
CCleaner is a staple.
Audacity is a good cheap audio editor.
Recuva is okay but I use Getdataback
Defraggler is great
I mentioned Portableapps in an earlier thread, definitely a good thing to keep on a spare flash drive just in case. That way you can use firefox and other programs without leaving a trace or if the computer you're working on doesn't have it.
Gimp - Decent alternative to Photoshop
ImgBurn is what I use on my work computers and a backup to Nero. Very lightweight and pretty good.

What more do you have to get for your system and do you have any pics of it?

I'm collecting shit now. It's supposed to be here tomorrow so I'm doing the fine tuning on what I'm going to put on it. Going to clean it first with PC-Decrapifier and Revo Unistaller. Then running CCleaner. I downloaded a copy of Acronis to make a back-up after I clean it and then I'm starting in with the essentials like codec packs (can't remember which ones I need!) and drivers.

Yes, its a great way to sync files between PCs. Been using it for years, even back when it was a closed beta.

So how exactly does it work? You drop a file into the dropbox and then it goes to an online server and you can retrieve it elsewhere? How long is the transfer on that?

I use
7-zip (which eliminates the need for that HJsplit bullshit)
Audacity
Launchy
Keepas
CCleaner

every damn day.

For syncing and daily file backups, I use Synctoy.

I was looking at Launchy right now!

It looks handy. Is it really good? Looks like something that eliminates the need for desktop icons.

Oh and how does 7zip eliminate HJsplit? I guess I just need to download that bitch and get it over with!

you can use it as a standard upload site, where you log in with your browser and upload or download from their server, or you can run their program which sits in your systray and basically acts like a sync program between whats on the web and whats in the dropbox folder in my documents.

Basically lets say you are on a pc at school working on a document, you can upload it to dropbox and as soon as you turn on your home PC running the client it will download the file to your PC. If you had the client on the PC at school and made changes to the file while at home, when you save the file in the dropbox folder in my documents it will update the school PC at the same time. It's basically is like a network folder.

Ah ok I got you. This will work good for helping out my family with all their tech issues.

I'll put dropbox on everybody computer and put shit in there for them to read.

7-Zip An open-source zip/archive utility. Can create zips, rars, etc. Really good.

Exact Audio Copy This is THE standard for ripping CDs. All us cats in Run's Lossless thread use this to rip. It's what the big boys use & swear by.

ImgBurn A solid CD/DVD/ISO burner.

Rainmeter A skinning/theming program for windows. It's alright.

GIMP Image manipulating software. Think "free open source photoshop". Works in Linux, MAC & Windows. I use it in Ubuntu.

Pidgin Open source Instant Messaging client. Works in Linux, MAC & Windows. I use it in Ubuntu.

Songbird Music Player. Not the best, not the worse.

XBMC Open source Media Center. Works with the major OS's.[/QUOTE]

just 7zip. 7zip is a powerful little tool that when winzip and winrar fails, 7zip will extract it. 7zip will try to extract anything that is compressed or that you think may be compressed.

i tried songbird and hated it. it sucks

both 7zip and hjsplit are great to have. they are both small programs using little resources but are powerful in what they do. i have installed winrar, 7zip and hjsplit. i dont even use winzip anymore

ive wanted to use launchy but never got around to it. i like the idea of it but probably wont implement that until i move and build a monster pc and put it on lockdown

GIMP sucks. i know people recommend it as an alternative but after using photoshop i can never go back.

exact audio copy is great, but i use easy cdda extractor instead.

I don't have any icons on my desktop.

7-zip will decompress and join split archives in one fell swoop, thereby eliminating the need for that HJsplit bullshit.

NO!!

Edit: As far as I know 7-zip can't un-split files that were split using HJsplit.

Well then, you don't know much, nigga!
I've joined a thousand HJsplit files from this very board using 7-zip. I don't have Hjsplit on my computer.

Edit: and it unRARs, unTars and/or unZips them at the same time.

yeah man like i said up there thats why i have both. some files only hjsplit will be able to work. and some files are specific to 7zip. you need both, sooner or later you'll see

i agree

I've had files that wouldn't be joined with anything other than HJsplit. Maybe I was using an old version of 7-zip. But I learn something new everyday...

Oh... and fuck u bitch!!:lol:

What made you decide not to get the SSD drive?

Also what are you going to be using for a backup?

The ssd thing is still kind of iffy as to what is a good one and what is not right now. I still might get one depending on how fast this new rig is without it. You know before I start filling up the new hard drive.

And I got a 500GB and a 250GB seagate that I use for my WDTV player so I am going to make an image and store it on one of those two.

I'm going to keep my old computer as a test dummy for new software before I put it on the new shit by the way!

That's another reason I am going through all these programs. Testing them to at least see if I like them. After tomorrow this old one can burn in hell for all I care so I'm running everything on it. Old one is 32bit and the new one will be 64bit but I can at least get a feel for shit.

Yeah I keep meaning to fuck with that EAC. I've been using Windows Media Player since I'm just use to it but it's not the best ripper sometimes.. :smh:

I might get that ImgBurn if this computer doesn't come with Roxio or whatever.

XBMC I'm looking at now. Not really moving me too much. Just looks like a media player. Got to look at it more though.

I've had files that wouldn't be joined with anything other than HJsplit.

Sure you have.

Perhaps that is true... and not the face-saving ploy I assume it to be.

In any event, I have downloaded hundreds, if not thousands, of files in that .001, .002 .003 format, where the poster expressly instructs one to join the files using Hjsplit, and in every instance 7-zip has rather smugly joined and decompressed the file and then looked at me like, what?
