I tend to go snorkeling in Tobago next week will be my 2nd time doing it but this time I stepped up my game and am willing to go in deeper waters to test out my equipment..
I'm at best, an average swimmer but feel comfortable and much more confident swimming with fins.. I also brought a vest just to be safe...
I think the following time I go back down I will step up and do the scuba thing, but I would like to be certified by then..
What are you guys experience and advice if any....

i plan on doing it when me and my wife go to St.Thomas next month.
i've snorkled plenty of times.......but never with scuba gear.....so it'll be a first for me.

Ive done sum snorkeling out in Hawaii.. My biggest problem was gettin used to the pressure when you hit the deeper spots.. The only advice I can give you is, have fun doing it!!

I have a full face snorkel and I had one interesting experience... You can breathe fine in it but I found when I went under water I tend to hyperventilate.

I could breath fine but it's like my brain was saying this ain't right.

Big difference between snorkeling and scuba. Got certified in the early 90's. Great sport..... BTW: swimming really has nothing to do with it. You wear a buoyancy vest that keeps you afloat prior to diving. You have weights that help you sink. If you are diving at 65 or 100 feet, how well you swim won't matter.

You'll want to take the basic cert class if you plan to try out any serious depth diving. Decomp sickness is not the move.

I was just in Curaçao and wanted to, but the way my shook levels with swimming are setup...

Did you use a full face mask or the regular snorkeling mask with that shit in your mouth? Because to me the difficulty was breathing through my mouth with the old mask plus the tube is much smaller and it seems like you don't get enough oxygen.. I am curious to find out how much it would differ with the full face mask and a much wider breathing tube. BTW with it you can also breath through your nose.

Its seems like a great adventure.
I got to get my nerve up to try it.

It was the full face mask and you can breathe thru your nose normally.

It was more a psychological thing when I went under water. One review on the mask made mention of this but I blew it off, but once I got over it I was able to dive and go under with no problem.

Here is a pic of the mask and me using it on a cruise to st martin at maho beach.

Yeah that's the one I just copped and I feel you on that psychological thing about breathing with a tube underwater I really felt weird with the old one and when I tried this one in the bath tub it felt kind of weird also, but I had a chest cold at the time and thought that was the reason..
But I will take your advice on trying to remain calm, I know this will be a huge challenge for me due to the fact that I spent 90% of my life terrified of water, and started swimming later in life.
But my thing is you live once and no better way of maxing it out than overcoming your fears..

Nuther point to add...The fucking clarity with which you see stuff with a full face mask on is incredible.
Once I went under I saw a ton of these skinny silver fish, no blinder like effect full periphery vision.

Maho beach isn't really a snorkel destination so I look forward to trying it at a more traditional snorkel spot with corals and reefs to explore.
