Back from Jellyfin-ville.

I'm certainly not trying to tell anybody to switch to Jellyfin; I'm simply urging y'all to keep an eye on it and have a working knowledge of it.

But this weekend, as I was trying to set it up for the 4th time this summer, I ran into an issue that many people run into that keeps them on Plex.

Plex had this issue with file names. The scanner would scan your files and provide incorrect metadata. Plex has largely fixed this to the point where you can name the file for Toy Story 5 as "vid09477.mkv" and it will still be able to detect that it's Toy Story 5. (Although you should certainly name your files correctly for archival purposes and to prevent issues)

When I set my TV shows for scanning, Jellyfin kept confusing "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (the TV show that ran from 1993-95) with the "Power Rangers" movie that was released in 2017.

That shouldn't happen because there is a 22-year difference between MMPR's finale and the release of that Power Rangers movie, and the simple fact that one is a TV SHOW and the other is a MOVIE!

And to make matters worse, when I got the IMDb IDs, it still didn't work.

So after 45 minutes of trying to get this right, I said fuck it, uninstalled, and went about my day.

My collection is not particularly huge, just under 7TB with 564 movies and 134 TV shows and musical collections for 234 artists.

If you have a HUGE library and you're fucking with Jellyfin, that could take you a whole weekend to fix the screwups, and if you got a job, school, kids, or parents to take care of, you won't really have time for that.

It's easier to load shit into Plex and have 99% of your library be correct and have the "fix match" option be robust enough to make quick fixes on mismatched items.

And I understand Jellyfin is a small team with limited resources, but I think the metadata scanner/scraper should be the thing they focus on the most or atleast be a top priority, because that type of tinkering was tedious.

With the high prices of hard drives right now and the foreseeable future
I’m debating if I should delete all my 4k movies and keep only 1080p
I have 1tb of 4k movies , all under 10gb

When I watch a movie the first time is usually the 1080p under 2GB WEB-DL
cause that comes out first

What is everybody here keeping for plex movies
720p 1080p 4k ?

I keep sci-fi and/or movies with special effects at 4K, everything else I decide to keep is at 1080p after watching in 4K. Primarily rips from QxR. TV shows at 1080P if possible. Usually RARBG or PSA x265rips that are usually a good balance of quality vs size. I will never go below 1080p unless i have to... older shows like Cosby and Living Single. Currently working with 52TB of storage.

I recently changed
From all tv shows at 720p
To fav and shows I might like at 1080p

Example

Apple TV shows I haven’t seen and are new
Widows bay 1080p
Star city 720p

Star city is like a maybe I might watch in the future

Relevant considering there was an outage yesterday. My shit been set up so I didn’t even know

Yes I posted this a few years ago
When there’s a comcast outage in my area
Plex still works because I did these instructions

I’ll put the link in the first post

Hey Plex Users, just a tip.

If you are adding the "A Different World" reboot/continuation to your Plex server, keep in mind that this is a totally new show, not the 7th season of the original "A Different World"

You should title your folder "A Different World (2026)" so your Plex does not confuse it with the original, especially if you have the original on your Plex.

Are you turning transcoding off or on?
I just have a soundbar so I convert the audio to stereo AAC 2.0 all my movies
To save a little space and not transcode the audio
Everything direct plays
To answer I don’t force direct play , I keep it on auto or whatever setting is called
If 10 people were to stream at the same time a 4k movie and transcode my computer can handle it thou

Anybody here familiar with Nostalgia TV or Quasi TV.

I just got on these apps and I find them to be interesting and a good addition to your Plex setup, just not looking to pay for them.

But Nostalgia TV LOOKS amazing.
