Any Plex users here ?

To the people that have 4k movies and share their movies
Do you keep the 4k in the same library or separate library for 4k and don’t share this ?
I dont have separate sections for 4K movies, they are in the same movie folder alongside the 1080 stuff. I don't bother getting movies made before 2005 in 4K. I have fiber so I have a pretty big/fast data pipe and my users can stream 99% of my 4K content with no problem. I do have the "Automatically adjust quality" setting on so if for some reason the client can't handle 4K it will transcode to 1080 but I've only seen that happen maybe 3 times this year. My synology has an intel chip so it can do hardware transcoding. I've got one user who is in the feds and watches on his phone so he is always transcoding down to 1080/480. I've been looking into installing an SSD in my Synology box and putting Plex and any caches on that since it will be read only and wont beat it up and that should improve the performance.

Get a das or nas enclosure

Saw this plex setup on reddit

Beelink Q14 (Intel 150) + Terramaster D6-320
That doesn't look to complicated to get setup either. I really want to do something like this or really lock in on an older pc enclosure but it just seems daunting to get the right fit together.

Is really not complicated , the cheapest thing to do is get a mini pc like beelink $179 or if you already have a spare old pc you can leave on 24/7
Or your current computer , I wouldn’t leave a laptop on 24/7 though plugged in

Buy a 4 or 5 bay das enclosure, the one I got cost $122

Install plex server on the computer that’s going to stay on 24/7 , connect the 4/5 enclosure to it via usb cable

That’s it , the thing that cost more money are the drives , I recommend not getting any drive below 10tb , they fill up quick , I had good luck so far buying used western digital on eBay

When you start talking about NAS. That’s where it gets expensive

Anybody else updating their fanart (posters backgrounds, title cards etc....)
I use https://mediux.pro
I used to, but Plex will always go change my posters after I spend an hour customizing them. I believe it happens when it's doing nightly maintenance and it updates the metadata. There's a way to stop it from doing that, but I don't bother anymore. I've got like 1500 movies and don't have the patience/time for that.

How good are those beelink's at multiple streams? You know? that's what im leaning towards, I just now realized that the thing about a NAS is it has hardware in it. So one of those other options looks like it will work for me better.

Online it says 4/5 4K to 1080p transcodes streams at the same time

Mac users you can go back as far as 2012 Mac mini , you can buy a 2012 Mac mini computer for $50 on eBay
Upgrade the ram to 16gb for $20
Upgrade the storage inside for a 2.5 SSD 1-4TB drive ,very easy to do
And your good to go
That’s what I was using before I got a 2024 Mac mini m4 , worked fine

Man my people are hot. All but 2 of them have those janky ass roku tvs. Most have switched over to using their PS5s to watch Plex now. I saw it firsthand over my brother's house, the new interface is janky, searching forward/backward in a movie is broken, constants crashes, all kinds of shit. They really screwed the pooch with this update.

I don’t subscribe to any streaming services ,I just download whatever I want to watch
But I do use another family members Netflix account
Also Amazon prime

They both say now you can’t use them unless your in the same house :hmm:

Never pay for streaming. Never!
The last family account I had access to was Netflix, but changed their policy to that one address b.s. last year.

They spent the whole year advertising that WWE was coming to Netflix, only to change their policy right before the launch.

I haven't even bothered to try to log in again since. Fuck em!
